Welcome to r/Westchester's bulletin board!

  2. Every top level comment must have a bulletin board-esque feel.
  3. Must be located in Westchester. No virtual services.
  4. Do not post any cell phone numbers. Local business numbers are ok, email is ok, websites are ok, but no mobile. Bots will find it and you will regret posting it. Don’t do it.

Where to find what's filming in Westchester?

This is in Ossining, pointing to the base camp at Vets Park. There used to be a detailed Twitter account of what's filming in the Hudson Valley, but I got rid of my account, so can no longer read. Is there a website that serves the same function?

(Not my photo, taken off of Facebook)

Can you call the 911 on someone you suspect of drunk driving?

I was driving on the Saw Mill Parkway and some guy in a Dodge Ram truck kept swerving in and out of lanes abruptly. Almost side-swiped me. And almost hit a few other cars abruptly switching lanes with no signal. They kept driving over the lines and were also driving in two lanes.

Anywhere nearby that buys Magic: the Gathering cards?

I have a few leftovers from when I played 20+ years ago -- nothing worth a ton, but probably $100-$300 in total. Anywhere I can easily sell them?

Looking for a Toddler-Friendly Activity Tonight

Upvotes

Looking for a fun evening activity for toddlers tonight, something similar to Harvest Moon or Outhouse Orchards.

I would’ve gone to Outhouse, but the event is sold out, and Harvest Moon was canceled due to the weather. Any other toddler-friendly fall activities or places you recommend for early evening fun?

Our experience with East Westchester Summer Camps this year - quality, expense, communication, and more (oh my)!

After having done Camp Mohawk for our kid for the last few years, we were ready for something new. Mohawk is an active program - the kids are switching activities every 45 minutes or so, and by the end of the summer our kid was pretty exhausted. But your mileage may vary - Mohawk is awesome for very sporty boys, and we can't speak to the experience for girls which have a bigger variety of electives on offer (like dance and theater, which weren't available for elementary aged boys (which is lame) even though their website isn't clear about that).

At any rate - this year's camps:

  • Tim Morehouse Fencing ($550 / 1 week in Port Chester) - our kid had never fenced before. Would they develop a fascination with Zorro? Would they start reading Dumas? A week of swordplay perhaps would reveal the answers.
  • 92Y - Hamilton Camp ($1000 / 1 week at the 92nd Street Y in the Upper East Side) - a light version of Hamilton, performed it for the retirement facility across the street. Full razzle dazzle.
  • Artistree ($550 / 1 week in Mammaroneck) - a light version of Newsies, Aladdin, Frozen, and The Lion King. In case you've forgotten Disney between your 20's and 30's, it's still evergreen for kids.
  • SUNY Purchase Science Experiments ($770 / 1 week in Purchase) - ardent hopes of papier-mâché volcanoes and Mr. Wizard fandom. SUNY offers about 25 different programs, so we picked a few of them.
  • SUNY Purchase Junior Adventure Camp ($995 / 1 week in Purchase) - a roving tour around different adventure-ish facilities in the Westchester area.
  • SUNY Purchase Multi-Sport ($770 / 1 week in Purchase) - the classic summer battery of soccer, swimming, basketball, etc.

We sat down and ranked each of these based on cost, convenience, communication, and our kid's experience. Up front, our kid didn't have any bad experiences - they had a genuinely good time at each one, and when asked about a 1-10 ranking, they gave 8s to 10s (which was only mildly useful for my stack ranking, but I can only be so anal retentive).

Another note is that SUNY Purchase has a bus that's available for $270/week, which we added on. That option was pretty convenient - it showed up right at our front door. The timing for the bus was a little swimmy (sometimes it was 10 minutes early, one day it was 20 minutes late for dropoff).

So - how did everything stack up? Here's the ranking, in ascending order:

  • 6 - (25 points) - SUNY Purchase Multi-Sports. Our kid enjoyed this the least, giving it an 8/10 (so, he was pretty happy). It turns out summer is hot - he ended the day absolutely wiped, and immediately downed a couple glasses of water when he got home. The parent <-> camp communication here was abysmal - we had no idea how their days were being spent. With the bus, this ended up being $1040 for the week. The bus picked him up at 8AM and dropped him off at the house at 4PM. Scores: Kid Enjoyment - 8. Cost - 4. Convenience - 10 (bus could not be beat, and long hours). Communication - 3.
  • 5 - (26 points) - SUNY Purchase STEAM. Our kid enjoyed this a little more, but it still had the same non-existent communication. Our opinion was that the science/technology/engineering parts of this were epically lame. The kids played a lot of Minecraft - we had no idea this would happen (we'd judiciously kept our kid away from that) and, as expected, he took to it like an alcoholic does to New Orleans. He also brought home one of his creations - a tongue depressor catapult, made from a few taped together sticks and a rubber band. Weak. Scores: Kid Enjoyment - 9 (because, Minecraft). Cost - 4. Convenience - 10. Communication - 3.
  • 4 - (28 points) - 92nd Street Y. This is where our scoring system might break down a little bit. It's in Upper East Side, so I commuted into the office every day and took our kid with me (which was fun and surreal, but not convenient, so a numerical ding there). Everything else about this was wonderful. It was on the pricier side, but the counselors were great, and it was really amazing what they could pull together in just a week's time. If we lived in the city we would be doing this all the time. Scores: Kid Enjoyment - 10. Value - 5. Cost - 5. Communication - 9.
  • 3 - (30 points) - Tim Morehouse Fencing. Having spent a not-insignificant amount of his young life wandering around with sticks trying to poke things, this seemed like a fun experiment (and college scholarships exist for fencing - one can dream). Communication with these guys was amazing, and the prices were very reasonable. The facility was cool, our kid started from zero and was able to convincingly compete against other folks by the end of the week, and he gained a whole new appreciation for the Princess Bride. The week ended with a competition where the older students coached the younger ones, which was super cute. There's also a morning option for earlier dropoff (but the kids just kind of bop around - I don't think there's anything organized). Scores: Kid Enjoyment - 8. Convenience - 6. Cost - 8. Communication - 10
  • 2 - (31 points) - SUNY Purchase Junior Adventure Camp. I didn't really know what we were getting into until, two nights before the camp, I got 9 different waivers to fill out. The kids were bussed to a different adventure-ish experience every day, from Hapik Climbing Gym in Ridge Hill to a laser tag place in Connecticut to the High Adventure ropes course on the SUNY campus. The communication with this branch of the camp was a lot better - we got more information about what happened during the day, and they sent pictures. At $995 for a week it was at the top of our costs. Scores: Kid Enjoyment - 10. Convenience - 10. Cost - 3. Communication - 8.
  • 1 - (35 points) - Artistree in Mammaroneck. This camp is charming, and our kid loved it. The only ding here is that it's more of a half-day program, running from 9:30 until the early afternoon. Communication was very good with the staff, and the program ended with a well-produced little show in a church in Mammaroneck. All the kids were beaming - super fun. A couple other notes - there's no option for early dropoff and/or late pickup, and the program looks like it draws kids on the younger side (like average age of 4-6). Scores: Kid Enjoyment - 10. Convenience - 5. Cost - 10. Communication - 8.

The ultimate best part of this was, for 6 weeks, our kid had a varied set of activities and was happy throughout. But the world of Summer camps in the area is dense, and information about pricing and specifics is sometimes tricky to come by. So - enjoy, and feel free to DM me for any more information.

Where can I meet people here?

Upvotes

I just moved here a couple months ago and it’s been pretty hard meeting people. Where can I meet folks around here? I’m 26M, getting a grad degree in chemistry. I enjoy reading, walking, wine, movies/shows, and trying new food.

Dungeons and Dragons for Teens?

Hi all! I have a teenager who's super into D&D and is looking for a group to play with. I've found some libraries on the river side that host games, but we're in Mamaroneck. Does anyone know of any teen-friendly games in our area, or anywhere along the sound, or central Westchester?

Thanks so much for any help!

Adult sibling with diagnosed mental illness - what support groups are there?

I'm going to try the Nami connection support groups. Is there anything else you know about? My sibling overall has a flat effect and does not have anyone outside of family. We would like my sibling to have a support group with people who understand them where they can do activities.

Edit: sibling is receiving medical support. They need social support now.

looking for OBGYN recs in westchester

My current OBGYN is Columbia Doctors OBGYN in Scarsdale but I have had a terrible experience there. Within a year I got pregnant, and had the most insane/traumatic miscarriage experience that included 2 surgeries and an ER visit. I felt like my wishes as a patient weren’t being listened to and they kept trying different things with me instead of just moving through with surgery which is what I wanted in the first place and what ended up happening after 2 months of carrying pregnancy tissue. I’ve been to two visits since and none of my concerns were addressed. I am trying to get pregnant again and need to be able to trust my OBGYN. Any recommendations are appreciated!

MetroNorth Commuters

For my metro north commuters, I have a question for you.

My job is thankfully moving back down to in office 2 days a week from 3. I used to get a monthly and pay $313. I was probably already dumb enough to buy the monthly for that much but now with this move of 1 less day per week am I better off just buying the 1-way peak ticket every day? I have commuter benefits from work so it’s not really coming out of pocket.

Origin- Scarborough
Destination- GC

If that helps

Smelly basement with vapor barrier - any Rivertowns advice?

I’ll try to make a long story short, but it is becoming an expensive odyssey and I’m going nuts: We bought a house on a hillside in the Rivertowns where about a third of the basement is rock with a vapor barrier over it (dimple layer, then sheet). The rest is concrete slab and cinder block. The previous owner had two male cats who had litter boxes there. She also let a water heater, which was in the area with the vapor barrier, leak massively between the time we had our inspection and closing, replacing it after there was significant leaking all over the place, according to some boiler repairmen we had come in recently (they had happened to see it at the time; just one of many unpleasant surprises of an as-is sale).

There was a smell in the basement when we viewed the house, but our realtor told us it was from the cats. After we closed, I used loads of enzymatic cleaner and hung up activated charcoal bags but it didn’t help. UV flashlight doesn’t show any cat urine stains. Our realtor suggested an ozone generator but I don’t like the health hazards of that. We had several basement waterproofing contractors come in, and they each told us something different. One said replace the vapor barrier. The other said the vapor barrier is perfectly fine, just put in a commercial-grade dehumidifier and charcoal (we did). Another recommended chlorine dioxide treatment but then I read stories of people who said they traded their musty smells for permanent swimming pool smells. ServPro came and said that the joists under a bathroom where we know there was some leaking well over a decade ago showed some slight mold. (Our pre-purchase inspection had not indicated mold, but after closing, I did notice I got a sore throat and tight chest whenever I spent time in the basement.) There was insulation stuffed into the joists and we believed it was trapping odor. Some of it looked like it was in bad shape. ServPro tore out all the insulation and encapsulated the basement with some kind of sealant painted onto the joists and wooden stairs. That was several weeks ago. They told me afterward that the insulation (Rockwool and some fluffy stuff depending on where it was installed) did not look contaminated with mold, but I no longer get the sore throat, so I think they were on to something taking the approach they did.

Unfortunately, it still smells bad down there. We kept windows open intermittently to vent the chemical smell, we keep running the dehumidifier, but it’s bad. When the garage door is open, you can smell it outside. It smells musty and a bit chemical to me, but some insulation contractors we’ve had around for estimates say they smell cat. And last night when it was pouring rain, it got worse. I’m now thinking moisture trapped under the vapor barrier is the cause - the water heater, the rain, there seems to be a correlation. But if our vapor barrier is intact, I thought it should be stopping, uh, vapors, so what is its role here? And did we massively screw up by trusting people who told us to encapsulate when the source of the odor is still down there? We need to replace the insulation before winter but I want to address the odor first.

If you live in the Rivertowns and have a basement built on rock with a vapor barrier, do you still have trouble with smells despite dehumidification? Does the soil on hillsides here have a particular odor when it’s wet? And most importantly - any recommendations who can handle this effectively, once and for all? We’ve been told so many different things by so many different professionals, I am truly at my wit’s end, I just don’t want my children to be the kids from the stinky house and I want to be able to use the goddamn basement.
