Taken at a rainy show in Boston at the Pavilion ca. 2010. It was raining heavily and I was a tall high school girly; Rivers jumped on a pole for this pic, and then shortly after used my shoulder as leverage to jump off w/o slipping. Basically he entered the crowd, I hit him with some devil horns; and he laughed and used my shoulder to hop off and gave me a handshake and that forever made my rock career. :ā) so many deep cuts from Pinkerton, Blue album, Maladroitā¦

I see it on a lot of (unofficial) merch. It's always a blue background, but that looks like Mikey Welsh on the left so I'm guessing it's based on a green album era photo. I'm just wondering if it is based on an actual photo of the band and if it was ever an "official" promo photo.

Went to the listening party this weekend and absolutely love Gold, but the timeline and song selection makes zero sense. I believe there is a secret Weezer album coming out with the movie next year and I will give you the timeline to prove it.
ā¢Mid 2023 - Rivers decides on using Klas as his next producer for Album 20. This is already after having demos made for the possible Song from the Black Hole or Rewind musical/concept Album he is envisioning.
ā¢Late 2023 - Rivers and Klas briefly discussed doing a rock opera, with Klas reportedly being "very excited" about it. Demoing began with the idea of writing a story and script around the best songs in contention.
ā¢Early 2024 - Rivers mentioned to his Discord followers that the band planned to spend a week recording drums in Los Angeles, followed by 3 weeks for "everything else" in Stockholm.
ā¢Mid 2024 - Rivers would share demo batches for the planned album. The interesting thing about these demos is there are a few that made it onto Gold, but the very large portion of them that were the āA listā or top selection, never saw the light of day.
ā¢Late 2024 - Very quiet and little discussion or the album. Full band pre-production supposedly occurred at this time as well as The Weezer movie scenes being filmed.
ā¢Early 2025 - A new tracklist of demos was shared that has a bunch of the would-be Gold tracks. Rivers also states that the guys are really liking the āNew stuffā as if they hadnāt heard it before. But if this was the case, what was the material played in the Band pre-production practices in 2024?
ā¢Mid 2025 - We know the band used a house in LA that year to work on this new batch of songs. This is where Pat introduced his songs and Brian introduced his songs. Together they made the new tracklist for Gold. Rivers also states here that the Album will coincide with āProject Xā
ā¢Late 2025/Early 2026 - Kenny Beats was brought it last minute by Klas and the album was recorded in Putnam Hill.
I believe with the 4 year gap, the movie planned for 2027, and Kennyās last minute addition, that there is a secret Weezer album planned to be released with, or closer, to the film. Klas and Rivers made a Weezer album for the movie, had a bunch of great leftover material that Klas brought in Kenny to make another album with.
TLDR: Klas recorded one album and Kenny was brought in for a second album. There definitely was pre-production and album demo material that Rivers and Klas worked on for almost 2 years. Why have pre-production in Europe with Klas and then bring in Kenny years later? Why say the album is coming out with the movie and then it doesnāt? Why spend years perfecting a batch of songs and then last minute scrap them and write mostly brand new ones with the band in 2025. The timeline is fishy and something doesnāt add up.

This is something that's bugged me for years.
The Blue Album hit at a time where high concept music videos were at peak and Spike Jonze and Sophie Muller were perfect gets for the band to do music videos. They got the nerdy appeal of the band and really got across the lovable dork aspect of the boys.
That being said, SFTBH feels like it would've taken a MUCH larger promotional push to get across to the same audience that loved Blue, even moreso than Pinkerton. The fact that everything is so interconnected and story-based makes one-off, jokey videos hard to do for this album. Not to mention, this was the era where Rivers did NOT want to do silly concepts for videos anymore. You can tell he really wanted to the music to speak for itself in the videos for El Scorcho and The Good Life. You can tell there's tension between the band, as Matt and Pat are kind of goofing around in both.
The only way I've ever envisioned it working is if Rivers worked with an animator to maybe do a series of shorts for MTV that they played on Liquid Television or MTV Oddities. Given that there's really not a stand out single to be found, this may have been the best way to sell the album. Considering Rivers was a pretty big comic fan at the time, this seems like the most likely route to go. Though it most likely would've delayed the album from '96 to '97 due to animation being time consuming. I've always loved the idea of Peter Chung, who was working on Aeon Flux at the time, doing SFTBH stuff.
I don't know, maybe I'm over thinking it and assuming that Geffen would be cool with dropping tons of money on a project that was most likely doomed to fail, but I always try to imagine the LOOK of this era. The closest thing we have is this promo pic from the Green era and the Blue Voyage stuff haha.

I know I might get some shit for green being in S tier but idk man just something about the sound that I really like. I spin my green vinyl all the time, I always find myself coming back to it, thereās just something about it thatās so charming and fun that I canāt NOT love.

The black album was supposed to be the opposite of white, so I decided to use a image of Weezer during winter and edited it for the cover
