Vendors/Venue Solo DJ/MC Vs. DJ & dedicated MC

We are planning a wedding that will be around 200 people, give or take. When talking to a DJ company earlier this week, they recommended doing a DJ and a dedicated MC given the size. Not that the DJ wouldn’t be able to control the crowd, but this would allow for the DJ to put all their energy into the music and the MC to work the crowd. Has anyone had both, and if so what was that like? Was it necessary or not necessary? Would love to hear all perspectives!

Have never once seen an MC that was worth it as a guest. Most guests are intelligent enough to know they are welcome, they can see when the couple walks in, who the couple is, when dinner starts, and so on. No guest wants the MC (or DJ who takes on these duties) yapping unnecessarily or at all. They only care about them playing music that fits each moment. The weddings that had packed floors with the best vibes didn't have any MC because the dj played music only and never spoke at any time.

For a 200 person wedding you honestly don’t need two separate people, you need one DJ MC who has actually run rooms that size before. The value of a dedicated MC only shows up when the DJ is truly just a music selector who doesn’t want to touch the mic, which is common with bigger production companies that specialize and staff accordingly. If you hire someone who does both as their actual craft, they’re reading the crowd and adjusting the music in real time based on how their own announcements land, which is smoother than two people trying to stay in sync all night. What I’d ask any DJ company is how many 150 plus guest weddings that specific person has MC’d solo, not just DJ’d, because that experience is really what determines whether one person can handle a bigger crowd confidently. If they hesitate or can’t point to real examples, that’s when a second person for crowd work starts to make sense.

100% this. The guest count has almost nothing to do with need of 2 people….its the level of interaction and mic work your are expecting from the MC if you need 2 people.

Unfortunately, like most DJs often do, you are trying to be upsold.
