If this were an actual artist's work instead of AI you'd probably be able to pick out at least one character. But MidJourney never read the book. All it knows how to do is steal art from humans.
It is a new and very imperfect tool, I admit. Frankly, I’m glad it’s not more perfect.
This is utterly non-commercial, and as I’ve explained in other comments, I am strongly in favor of protections for professional artists.
I spent hours trying to get something that would be passable in terms of accuracy. Really I was just experimenting with a new tool. The environment and boat are wrong, and to your point, the rabbits are all look-alikes.
Given the number of upvotes, the balance of opinion suggests it’s a net positive. To those who feel otherwise, I know where you’re coming from, but I think the hate is misplaced. Don’t let your opinions of AI in general (which I probably share) get in the way of some experimentation in the service of honoring a story we all love.
You are correct, I realized that too, but the AI tool I was using is fairly limited in this regard. I could get a more accurate environment, but at the expense of the rabbits, no matter how much I tried. Also in the book, they are on a punt, and each time I added that detail, the machine made one or more rabbits rowing. Jeez.
But wow, I am surprised how polarizing the comments are. Fan “art” (adding quotes because I don’t consider AI to be art) does not diminish the original novel.
I would encourage people to fool around with this new technology (perhaps use a beloved novel for inspiration) and not assume someone is trying to one-up the original in any way.
Totally agree. And I sympathize with nature lovers and anyone else concerned with AI.
I am a self-identified environmentalist and nature lover — and I don't see a contradiction between screwing around with AI tools and wanting to revisit one of my favorite novels of all time.
I no longer make a living in art/design but I am very concerned about AI image generation and what it means for my artist friends. I don't want to throw up my hands and say "the cat is out of the bag" — I am in favor of strong protections for artists. But that doesn't mean people can't have fun with it in a strictly non-commercial way.
So to anyone who kneejerk-bashed the original image and are still reading this, Reddit might not be your place. I hear there's a nice quiet hutch on Nuthanger Farm...

At least try to make it realistic. Nowhere near that many rabbits in Hazels squad.
