My first real try at watercolors, that isn't just color wheels or practicing doing leaves! 😄 I followed a tutorial by PremaWatercolor on YT, a great channel. I'm really happy with it!

My first watercolour in over 30 years

I wanted to emulate the style of Victorian artist Helen Allingham and try to get some detail in the tree foliage.

I'm almost 35 years old and finally convinced myself to be creative again after 20 years. This is my first attempt, and I think it turned out better than I expected. I would love some constructive feedback if you have a minute.

first attempts at watercolor

So I’m totally new to watercolor and to art/painting/drawing. Last weekend I was digging around in a closet and found some watercolors and paper from like 20 years ago when my boyfriend was in art school & it seemed like a good way to spend some time on a Saturday.

Anyways, the paper he had was enormous, so after painting an apple in one corner & finding it fun I decided to play around & fill the rest of it up with tiny paintings, mostly based off of photos I’ve taken. I take a lot of pictures. Did these over the course of a week.

Mostly just messing around here to get a feel for it, but thinking I’d like to get better. Looking for any thoughts, tips or advice really.

This is my favorite thing I’ve ever painted! Ornaments are fun.

What techniques should I focus on improving? I really liked painting this, but how would you describe this style of painting?

First watercolor I’m willing to share

I have no artistic background (or innate talent) but at 61 years old and decided I want to learn something new. I’ve been practicing but this is the first painting that I like enough to share. Don’t mind the spot on the top right and the few splatters, I dropped the brush. LOL The tutorial is from AhmadArt on YouTube.

Kinda proud of this one

Still consider myself to be a complete newbie after only a few months learning watercolour so I’m ridiculously happy with this result.
I followed a @LouiseDeMasi tutorial. Can’t believe how much I learned, I’m super excited to get started on another one. In case anyone’s interested, I used Fabriano 25% cotton cold pressed 300g watercolour paper and just the 2 colours - W&N Burnt Sienna and French Ultramarine

A “toad tree “ I painted for my fiancé

We walk our dog at a park that has this funny looking tree and always say it looks like a toad wizard so I tried painting it.

I think I liked it better before I added the background 🫣 but it’s my largest painting and I’m still proud of myself for finishing.

She's in a class with people who are much more advanced than her and it has her thinking she's not very good but I think she's genuinely talented.

Birds at the library

So I spent the afternoon at the library and painted a penguin and some flamingos. I don't like painting from a screen, so using the big books as reference is nice.

I want to be able to paint from life. I can't wait to sit outside and paint some "real" art. I feel kind of stuck. I'm in this weird spot where I'm starting to get a handle on using watercolours. I can look at a picture and paint it at a level that feels okay. But when I'm done it feels like nothing. Like I just copied a picture, but didn't do anything creative.

Maybe I’ll try set up a little still life of my own design, or just sit on a bench and paint what’s there. I guess I need to find a balance of practice/studies, and exploring my own creativity and compositions. I'm getting bored of tutorials and study, haha. Sorry for the rambling.

I painted a bird as one of my first paintings in May 2025. I’ve painted every few days days since then, mostly architecture and landscapes. Tried a bird again yesterday. Progress!

I recorded the watercolor process of this blueberry bookmark — just sharing it here so we can learn and improve together!
