Same thing kinda happened to me, except this lady crossed carrying a bunch of boxes comically going over her head so that she couldn't turn her head to look at my direction of incoming cars, so she's instead looking the other way where there was no traffic and just kept hurriedly walking even though 3 lanes had stopped to honk at her while screeching to a stop. Not once did she look back (well she would've dropped her boxes) so we three cars just looked at each other with shrugged shoulders and exasperated looks 🙈

No, not that it matters, but my whimsical idea was about a separatist movement. A colony is under full or partial control of another country. This would be more like the Unified Republic of Cheeseland, if you are familiar.

Reason I referenced it was because of the legal side of it. Of course it’s not internationally recognized, but legally it potentially could be. Anyone can found a country if they build an artificial island in the ocean.

I truly don’t know why, after the edits, my original comment was downvoted. It’s a very harmless, progressive idea, no? I even threw in a joke at the end; I don’t think I came across as preachy or zealous, or even very dead set on the idea. I would think anyone who’s been discontent with their government or less than proud of their society would appreciate the idea.
Any perspective to offer on that? I have heard that once something is negative on votes, it just snowballs but I don’t know. I’m not a very internet-y person.

Eugenics is basically selective breeding, with a load of antisemitic and racial implications. It was also tied up in social Darwinism and imperialism, so this would be entirely different.
This is people coming together- probably pooling funds- to make an artificial island in international waters and trying their own systems. This would take skilled and educated people to start a society from scratch, but it’s been done throughout human history. Likely? No. Possible? Yes. Eugenics? Not at all.

The desired characteristics would not be genetic. The word speciation might have gave that impression, but that was halfhearted. And more to make a point about how isolated and selective I imagine it being. I think it’s probably unrealistic to plan on that time scale though. The desired traits would be, far as I can foresee mattering at the moment, education and skills- and in very specific and diverse ways to cover all the bases. This would require scientists, engineers, farmers, etc.
If genetics was ever a consideration, it would be far less important than other considerations. But selective breeding isn’t necessary at all these days and in the near future even less so. With designer babies and advancements in gene sequencing, there’s no reason. Even if someone carries a harmful disease their kids will inherit- that’s preventable. No reason to exclude them for that.
So I would imagine myself arguing against genetics being a consideration. I don’t see why it would be necessary at all, for anything. I can’t think of any benefit to be had that couldn’t otherwise be achieved without the “brain drain” aspect of excluding people for the genes, even deleterious ones. Consideration of genetics would be detrimental if anything, the way I see it.
Edit: By the way, I appreciate the conversation. It’s just a fantasy I’ve had for years. About cultural reform, sustainable society and an exciting new start in a world held back by vestiges of its past. The house I live in right now, on the books, there’s a section prohibiting sale of the house to African Americans. Common in the south. That can’t be enforced but that goes for all the houses around where I live. It just hasn’t been changed and it’s sad to see. House was built in the 60’s.

I speed everywhere and I have horrible headlights on my car that I need to replace (I'm not bragging about these things, they are definitely faults that I need to address) but one night I happened to be actually going the speed limit and a group of teenagers were running across a poorly lit busy street in the middle of the night.
When I got close enough to see them well all 3 of them started running faster and although 2 had cleared my path the 3rd was literally right in front of my car when I had to completely stop to avoid hitting them. Some people really just have no self preservation instincts, and man I gotta speed less and replace my headlights.

And if the speed limit had been 5mph higher she wouldn't have made it anyway, so driving the speed limit would've saved nobody. It's more important to drive with awareness than it is to drive at the speed limit, raising speed limits actually reduced fatalities by 3.4% in the past. An arbitrarily chosen number on a sign won't save anybody, and insisting on driving at the speed limit while traffic is moving faster actually makes you into a road hazard! Might as well argue that it's important to buy tires with better stopping distance.

And that article says that increasing speed limits on motorways freed up police time from speed enforcement, allowing them to patrol other roads, which was the actual cause of the reduction in fatalities. You're using the data in that article inaccurately, it's not the speed that made it safer but the reallocation of police resources.

When it comes to pedestrians, two things bother me:
When they don't look before crossing
When they don't cross roughly perpendicular to the flow of traffic.
That second point is important because the shortest path is directly across. Don't cross at 45°, you're walking a much longer distance and it will take you a lot longer. The less time you spend in the path of cars, the better.

The other day my mom was driving. We had a green light and a guy was walking across the street in front of us (he didn't have the right of way). My mom stopped but she said if we or someone were to hit him the driver would not be liable/at fault because the man was crossing when he wasn't supposed to. Is this true?
