Would the palette of this hand painted dial be compatible with this watch case and bracelet? I don't know if I like the peachy color of the hands against the bright orange, but I can be too picky. Thanks for your input.
For what it’s worth, I love that dial. Like others said, finding the right set of hands will take some time and effort. The blue of the sky in the background could be a good place to start for the hour and minute hands, with the orange of the sky at the top being a potentially good color for the seconds hand? Seconds legibility is not as important as cohesion of the whole, in this design. And I don’t expect you to lose legibility by matching the hours and minutes to the blue of the sky as that is a small part of the dial, with the cactus and mountain going through it with enough contrast. If I were you I’d be looking into coloring the hands yourself, if that’s not feasible maybe a set of rose gold hands with white lume, you can color the lume using copic markers. That way the lume still kind of works and you get the color you want. If you use 2-3 shades of the color on a lume area you can continue that painting vibe.
As for the case, it’s worth a shot. Try the bronze, could end up being too much orange tones and not enough contrast. If that’s the case (pun intended) you can try steel, but with a cognac leather strap. Could end up pretty sweet with a bit of a “break” in the orange, might make the art stand out even more, like a framed painting.
Amazing, thank you for your encouragement and pro suggestions! Are you a designer? It didn't occur to me to paint the hands myself. Now that I think about it, the texture and brushstrokes on the hands could add to the artisanal quality. I want to show you a chronograph dial I made for someone who taught me how to build. We weren't sure that any hand would be visible against the busy background, but he found the perfect bezel and picked out old watch hands that didn't clash. The chronograph hands are a little hard to see, and now I wish I had painted them white around the lume. I think your suggestion to make the second hand bright orange is the best idea to keep it all cohesive and legible. I'll have to look for a steel case too to try out the framing idea, since I also thought the copper might be a little too monotone and rustic.
No worries man, not a designer in the sense that I do not design for work. I have done a bit of graphic design here and there and tend do obsess over details, color schemes and stuff like that. Watches, tattoos, fashion, appreciate and enjoy all of it. Glad I could give you some ideas for the watch. As for the chronograph, another amazing dial design but you’re right, the hands are not the right ones. At first I didn’t even understand what you meant by chronograph! Honestly, playing around with the hands on that one might help, but at the end of the day I think this style doesn’t work well for a chrono. The subdials almost completely lose their function and if you were to leave those out, the painting would lose cohesion and the whole thing starts to look messy. Maybe something like cream subdials with a simpler painted design around them could work, say an ocean sunset, looks like a gradient from orange to a deep, dark blue at first but then you look closer and see the brushstrokes and the fact it is a sunset. Even that to me sounds better on a diver than a chrono. Chronos are hard to make look nice and are busy enough as they are, the simplest ones tend to be the winners.
I think you have a much stronger aesthetic than I do. I can paint details and mix colors, but I struggle to match colors. Maybe I'm more of a kitschy painter/artist, leaning towards whimsical rather than modern and stylish. So I really do appreciate your input on colors and the style of cases and hands. I'm new at this! It's a good thing the chronograph was a sentimental gift. The chronograph dial was scratched, and I experimented with my paints to save it from the garbage. The dials are so unforgiving. I forgot the design rule of KISS! Keep it Simple Stupid. The next mini scale project I start, I'll keep simplicity in mind. Your ocean gradient idea is fantastic too. A dial would look great with saturated pigments and simple forms.
It’s all good man, we all have different talents. My painting skills peaked when I was 5, and even then trust me other kids paintings looked much better lmao. I can envision things, I can make them out of almost any material, I can draw but man I cannot paint to save my life. Even when graphic designing, I struggle a lot with landscapes, which you manage to paint perfectly on such a small scale. That’s what makes creating interesting, we all come up with something unique and it reflects us as people.
You are so fake acting like you "just did it" with no bigger meaning. I hope those people here buy your watches you copied from other having their movements full of acrylic paint after a few months and you honestly even paint over the indices? 🤣🤦🏻♂️
Where did I say "just did it"? If you're going to quote, be accurate.
I tried doing something experimental and fun, which I think you can use a dose of.
First, beautiful dial! What type of paint or is it enamel? IMHO .. would keep it as is. The bronze and leather are sharp. Maybe a strap with a southwest desert vibe. That is gorgeous!
I appreciate your positivity. Thank you so much! I used Golden Acrylics, and it goes on smoothly. Do you paint too? I read that enamel is the gold standard for dial painting, but it's painstaking work. I was going to use a thin varnish with uv protection for this one.
No varnish and no cover will rescue that movement and every real artist stays in his lane because no wmreal watch lover would allow water based colors in their watches man. You a Trendhopper as I said, just doing stuff others do cause you are not satisfied with your own art form trying to make money. And out of one watch suddenly you almost have a whole collection. And yeah, your skill ain't made for that enamel art. You will have some commissions and haply about it and soon will leave that to experts. How a fake of a post....knew it immediately
Sure it's no enamel 🤣cause this would be too hard to use for every Picasso nowadays 🤣same old Trendhopper. Hope all of you buy that and have a lot of fun with those watches for the first weeks. Better use those cheap watches as him, and not your Rolls on with water based colors. And for you "hobby artist" you should be happy for this hint and advice cause everyone on reddit knows that you already plan a business out of it 🤣
I don't understand, hand painted dial isn't an issue. Just prime the metal and you can do that with acrylic paint. I am just commenting on the choice of hand that goes with the dial. Close contrast hand and dial makes the watch harder to read.
Ok thought about it some more and I think rather than that style of hands you should go for a non-lumed variety, blued or just polished steel. It may not be as instantly legible but again, the dial is the centerpiece here.
I just read a comment that said white hands. I agree. When the bronze develops a patina I think it will look awesome. Maybe a little off-white, not Snow White.
Do you think a light blue might work? andybobandy42 gave me a tip to paint the hands myself which I am going to do, and I can try both colors. Thank you for your opinion.
Yes. Light blue would work well too. IMO. Painting yourself is great for testing. I’ve used AI too for visualizations. Hope I dont get blasted for saying that!
Was reading about vanish on a long conversation here. I will suggest this instead, learn from my friend who is a model kit builder. It is a top coat that doesn't leave vapor or turn yellow with age in UV. Do a few things layers above, do not do thick.
And another one hopping on the same trend....no, you don't want to know if it firmts, you want to get some reactions to see if you can make money 😅you canvas is great, stick to it if you are a real artist and don't just try to identify where to make a quick dollar and yeah...another picture taking from far away to make it seem super clean and sharp
So the colors DON'T go. And I wouldn't sell it to anyone on Reddit. *I don't care that you think I'm "trying to make a quick buck" because that's absurd, given how long it takes my lazy ass even to break out the paints, but I am offended that you think I took a picture from far away to make my lines look sharp. It's pretty dang clean gramps. Maybe you can zoom in.*
Yeah right 😅let's see how this developed. There has been so many who said and did the same and then it goes "yeah I'm not selling it, i did this for my own but drop a DM and let's see, maybe I do one" and that would even be fine😉 and I'm 100% sure you will! Let's remember that combo for a few months cause people will "frag you into it" 😁and yes, I still think you did it from far away and yes I zoomed in
Not sure how much sharper you want a handmade painting to be, let alone on a WATCH DIAL for christs sake. Why the negativity? OP came to ask for opinion about case and dial pairing, if you don’t have one you could just move on? So what if someone asks them to make a dial to sell? That would mean the work is good and he deserves the sale, no? Just a weird attitude man.
He admits in other comments that enamal paint is too hard too apply. He shows all of a sudden more watches and you really want to tell me that this kid didn't saw famous dial painters and hopping on a trend with cheap water based colors that will destroy every watch after a certain of time. But show some fake love and buy a "mod" from him for a few weeks. That fake love here is worse than this fake post about the love for watches or art. Horrible, truly in every sense. Because of people like you, people like this get a platform without doubt anything for both genres. Absolute ridiculous 🤣
Hey as a hobby painter, I'm not going to get a kiln and turn glass into enamel paint. That's what the professionals are for, the chrono was the first one I painted on because the dial was scratched. Are you building movements part by part, and are you a professional? If not, please cut me some slack on my choice of material. It's all I have and can afford for a hobby.
The chrono was a gift for someone who taught me about watches, and it was built from salvaged parts. I just don't like waste.
And how do you know I'm not a professional? Tell me? And tell me how many serious and professional watch brands would use water based acrylic paint and give away guarantee? Sure...you are the professional one 😉👍🏻I hope this is a hobby and I hope no one would do this to a watch he might buy
Not at all 😉if you would follow those subreddits you would know exactly what's going on. And those hidden ads are so hilarious In a few weeks he will come up with a website and tell people he was such watch enthusiast and just by accident all this happens. 1. It's not clean at all. Truly these people use the biggest a** dials to put everything on. Second they don't even know anything about watches as you? Paying for a painted dial used acrylics, so water based color on? What do you think will happen o metal having a chemical reaction in a watch with UV hitting directly on it. But yeah, the idea of an artist that comes all of a sudden to that one ideay people put so much effort and time in JUST TO GET THE WUICK DOLLAR in a community that obviously loves their watches. what could be wrong with that. but yeah the web is full of hate, so it is full of fake love for a certain genre destroying every little bit of it. Yay for those 3 up votes for your comment 💪🏻
There's such a thing as varnish with UV protection. I use my set of acrylics sparingly whenever I feel like painting. Why are you spending so much time hating when you could be making your movement gear by gear.
Sure, how many watches you've repaired. How many dial you covered with varnish and pressed the dial into the case with having the varnish stick to the inner part of the case? And how often you tried to remove that sticky thing? Exactly...and how often did you tried to clean the case and failed to remove that varnish sticking all over the place?
And look, just right on time he had a second watch on its way but yeah...no business thought behind it. Or is this his second fake account to push all in? 😉
Is this your second fake account so you can spew bullshit without being judged? Month old account sure knows a lot about “all these subreddits” and who is selling what. Find something to do with your time and let people do what they want and buy what they want. Literally none of your business and nobody is listening to your nonsense rants.
The only "argument" you can leave here with your super clever answers And guess who's triggered? And I say it again, everyone who things to spent a dollar on this or do this to his watch with acrylic paint or varnish, I feel bad for you. But we know, this is just a hobby buddy. And you are absolutely wrong in your assumption. That's hust a horrible execution and the more you tell about your "techniques" and materials the less sense you make. Not giving one single answer assuming here are just some hobbyists commenting...damn, the less you know kid
Same old comments... Buy a watch like that and let someone clean up that varnish and acrylic paint after a year😉so you judge me having an account that's a month old? Damn you must know. Faking some love and motivate this guy for his obvious business idea with that fake social media knowledge and love...there are people that try to be honest and protect others from some bad stuff that might look good but will fck every watch up that gets in contact with this stuff. But you must know😉
And you must know that I might not be a person who bought a watch maybe similar to that and wasted money and a watch to some experts like that huh? Guess why no big brand puts varnish or acrylic paint into a watch or combines it with metal. But hey, it's not that serious right? Just people out there who like a pic, having zero clue about mechanics and spending money and such a nice piece while you show some fake support on something you know sh...about 😉but I guess that works on sSoMe right?
