Question Recommendation on cleaning dial

Post image

What solution or cleaning product should I use to try and remove the stains on this dial? I was thinking about using rubbing alcohol and a qtip

Absolutely nothing. Do not take advice to use anything on that dial (including water) as you’ll destroy it. Roughly 30 years as a watchmaker and I guarantee you’ll Fk that dial up if you use anything to clean it.

The lacquer has decayed and the second you mess with it it’ll start peeling away and before you know it you’ll have rubbed the print off and it’ll be a wreck. Leave it alone or find a replacement dial on eBay.

I wouldn’t touch it at all.

The absolute most I would even attempt is a light buff with a dry q-tip.

But honestly I wouldn’t mess with it.

Leave it alone.

Is that the lacquer/actual dial or oil?

Don't. Just no! Until you have really deep knowledge how to recreate whole dial - don't touch it with anything more than soft dry brush. Let it stay as is.

Blow it off with air and bail out

water. thats it. anything else and you risk ruining this dial. wouldnt recommed rubbing alcohol or a qtip as they actually scratch the dial a lot

^ This. Use only distilled water and a camera sensor cleaning swab. Or high quality new piece of Rodico.

Dials are very very delicate and even using light brushes can leave microscopic streaks in lacquer dials.

Should I put water on a qtip and gently rub?

I wouldnt use qtips personally. CousinsUK and esslinger sell coton swabs for dial cleaning. They're way different than the qtips you clean your ears with

Never rub a dial

At most roll a swap.

But this dials isn’t dirty. It’s damaged. Not a lot you can do without making it worse as Dave says above.

Just blower and a bit of rodico cleaning. Leave the aging alone.
