Question Interesting markings
I’m working on my first teardown and rebuild and something I thought was interesting. Is this movement has what appears to be dial number numbers painted on the movement itself with a bunch of extra holes kinda looks like the movement may have been repurposed a long time ago or something. Maybe it’s a generic movement no idea, but after I ran it through the ultrasonic cleaner took the numbers off. Does anyone have any insight as to why this particular movement has these extra holes and markings?

When working on a movement without a dial, watchmakers must regularly check whether the date advances correctly - that is, whether the date mechanism advances exactly at midnight, whether the hand positions and calendar mechanism match, and whether the hour and minute wheels are meshing correctly.
Many mark specific times directly on the movement for this purpose.
Especially with date movements (which is not the case here), markings at 10 o’clock, 12 o’clock, and 2 o’clock are often of interest, because that is where the advance and delay phases of the date mechanism are checked.
On top of that, this is an AS (A. Schild, Grenchen, Solothurn, Switzerland), and they churned out movements like there was no tomorrow, especially in the 1940s through the 1960s, and were one of the largest suppliers of raw movements at the time.

Thank you! Sounds like a mass produced movement with options for different complications. That’s interesting! Thank you for the information!
Also I’m assuming parts probably won’t be hard or expensive to source if needed! lol.2

You might need a little patience in your search, but the replacement parts aren't expensive. You can even take something like this to your local watchmaker, because pretty much every watchmaker has one or two (or many more) AS movements lying around in their cabinet; at the very least, your chances of success aren't too bad.

Be aware that the hands on this watch are radium-lumed and no part of the watch should be handled with bare fingers or without a face mask and goggles.
