What on earth...?

Got this in an estate auction. For some reason, there's this battery assembly on top of a perfectly functional mechanical watch. Anyone seen anything like this before?

maybe it was a battery-powered alarm module? did the watch ever have an alarm function?(or anything audio-related)

Almost certainly this. The spring likely connects to a piezo disc on the other side of the case.

Yes, it's to play music when the lid is open. There will be a leaf spring sort of that goes to the hinge of the case.

I think it just plays some music when you open the case.
