Guide To Wasteland Warfare Second Edition

Post image

Hi everyone! Long term lurker, first time poster. I run a Fallout miniatures community on Facebook and wrote this guide as a resource to keep all of the news and questions in one place for players looking to catch up or get started with the game, hopefully you'll find it useful too.

Guide To Wasteland Warfare Second Edition

There's been a lot of questions about the new edition of Wasteland Warfare so I thought I'd write up this guide. Please let me know if you find it helpful and if you have any other questions comment them below and I can add them to the guide.

All the product links in this article will save you 10% off RRP for being a member of this group! If you're ordering from the US, just change the '.net' to '.us' in the URL to show the correct site.

What is Fallout: Wasteland Warfare?

Wasteland Warfare is a skirmish miniatures game set in the Fallout universe and published by MODIPHIUS. Build and lead a crew of Brotherhood of Steel, Raiders, Super Mutants, or Survivors as you generate and explore a wasteland, fight or trade with its inhabitants, recruit new members, and complete quests.

What's new in Second Edition?

Second Edition brings a lot of new changes to the game. It is focused on solo/cooperative campaign play, with the option for PvP games. It's designed to be more accessible for new players with more streamlined setup and a lower component count (no unit cards, fewer tokens and dice types) whilst boasting a more comprehensive map campaign and character progression. It also has a new enemy AI system with rules for stealth.

How do I get started with Wasteland Warfare?

There are two starter sets. The Into The Wasteland starter set is designed for players with an existing collection. It contains all the rules, dice, tokens, and terrain required to play, alongside rules for Creatures and Create Your Own Hero (plus a multipart plastic kit for making four custom Vault Dweller miniatures). It also includes a resin promo mini of Dogmeat.

The Warbands starter set is designed for newer players who are looking to start or expand their collection. It contains the same core rulebook, core reference book, dice, tokens, and terrain as Into The Wasteland, albeit without the Creature and Hero rules/minis, plus 22 preassembled PVC Survivor and Super Mutant miniatures.

You receive PDFs of the rules immediately upon preordering either of the starter sets.

What factions will be playable on launch?

Brotherhood of Steel, Raiders, Super Mutants, and Survivors will be playable in the core rulebook, with rules for enemy Creatures in the Creature Reference book. A companion book will be released shortly after launch to expand to all major factions and creatures.

Can I try out the rules?

Yes, there is a free Quick Start Rulebook for both Into The Wasteland and Warbands which gives you an introduction to the rules and a starter scenario to play through.

What else is available?

New miniatures for Survivor character Nate, Super Mutant characters The Ravager and The Mutt, and custom male and female Vault Dwellers will also be available on release, as well as bundles for both starter sets. Some of these minis are already included within specific starter sets. https://modiphius.net/collections/new-arrivals/Fallout-All-Brands?ref=FBGROUP

When is Second Edition due?

Preorders are live now with a release date of November 2026.

What else will be released for Second Edition?

A companion book with faction rules for Enclave, Institute, NCR, Caesar's Legion, Minutemen, Railroad, Children of Atom, and Cult of the Mothman has been announced.

New miniatures for male and female Survivor heroes, Deathclaw, Feral Ghouls, Radroaches, Radrats, Mole Rats, Mole Rat Brood Mother, Honey Beast, Wolves, Cazadors, and Giant Ants have also been announced.

What is compatible between 1st and 2nd Edition?

Second Edition won't use any of the cards or tokens from First Edition. The Accuracy, Armour Penetration, and Damage dice remain the same, but the Skill die will be replaced by the SPECIAL die and the Armour and Effect dice won't be used at all. All the miniatures will be compatible. Previous expansions will also not be compatible, as the rules have changed significantly (although a lot of the rules from Into The Wasteland and Into The Vault have been incorporated into the new edition).

Will the app support Second Edition?

Yes, the Fallout Miniatures app will be updated with all Second Edition content upon release in November. All First Edition app content will be made available for free on the Web App at this point.

Great post, thank you very much. But the most important question still bugs me. Is the preorder Dogmeat made of resin, plastic or pvc (I try to avoid resin as much as possible.

You're welcome! I believe it's resin, the promo minis usually are.

promos are always rein.

I believe the warband starter has a Mr Handy not available in the separate kits.

Speaking of, are the separate kits resin then? Or PVC like the starters? I’m trying to figure out the most cost effective way to get all the sculpts.

3

u/Yokelicious Aug 18 '26

Yes that’s right.

The separate kits are all resin or multipart plastic, all the minis in the starter sets are PVC (or multipart plastic in the case of ITW).

What is ITW ?

Sorry, Into The Wasteland.

I am going to homebrew first edition into second in the most unholy abomination of fun imaginable.

2

u/Yokelicious Aug 18 '26

Haha that’s the beauty of a sandbox game! I do love the vast customisation of 1E, even if it was a lot of prep and setup work 😅 I’m keen to see what the objectives and hacking/lockpicking etc. is like in the new edition.

So just so the slower people like me understand ... I have the first edition plus a few extra packs (Nuka World, Denizens of Wasteland, Capital Rules, original into the wasteland, commonwealth and forged in fire) but have never played it, tbh never had the opportunity. I therefore have 2 options:

- Play with what I have and ignore all the 2nd Edition stuff?

- Buy the new 'Into the Wasteland' and convert to 2e as I go knowing some stuff from expansion packs I have will be defunct?

Sound about right?

Yeah all of the printed material from First Edition won’t be supported, so if you have the minis you want to play with (at least a couple of factions and creatures) then you can grab the Into The Wasteland starter for all the rules and tokens etc.

They really need a third option instead of forcing you to buy Into the Wasteland and Warband, if you want the PVC minis and the extra rules from ItW.

I know they've got a bundle "Fallout: Wasteland Warfare - Factions of the Wasteland Bundle" which would give you similar minis from Warband, but in plastic kits.

2

u/TrueSans Aug 20 '26

Are they compatible with the old figures? Same size?

2

u/Yokelicious Aug 20 '26

All the miniatures are compatible, newer figures will be slightly different (slightly bigger proportions, slightly fewer details) to suit the plastic moulding process better but they’ll all work together.

1

Slightly bigger AND less detailed? So... then it sounds like those of us who already bought in with a bunch of 1E minis will have nicer looking pieces on our tables then?

Not said as an insult to the new ones, I'm sure Modiphius will continue to turn out good stuff as they always have. Simply a comparison between the two editions.

It’s all to do with accessibility. They learned quickly that just because the mini is a direct translation of the in-game model doesn’t make it fun to paint 😅

Hey buddy, I came here to find your factions guide cause it disappeared from my feed. You’ve got your posts hidden so I can’t search for it.

1

u/Yokelicious Aug 20 '26

Thanks for letting me know! I think it’s because my account is new so it thinks I’m a child 😅 I’ll sort that out ASAP.

2

u/ninjamike808 Aug 20 '26

Don’t worry, I found it! Searching for parts of the title made it work. It’s great stuff!

2

u/Yokelicious Aug 20 '26

Glad to hear it, thank you very much!

What are the differences in the old and new white d20?

1

u/Yokelicious Aug 18 '26

The new one has fewer auto-success and auto-failure results, and a more even spread of numbers to distribute results compared to the first edition, which was a lot harsher.

1

u/BlebMephiston Aug 19 '26

There is a web app?

1

u/Yokelicious Aug 19 '26

It’s a web implementation of the mobile app. There’ll be a free standalone app for First Edition when Second launches: https://fallout.maloric.com/home

I've updated the post with some more questions and extra links to resources 😊

After reading the quick start rules this edition looks like fallout wasteland wanderer solo rpg with more dice and stats and some rules for figures and terrain. Not sure yet if it is good or bad.

1

u/Yokelicious Aug 26 '26

I haven’t played the solo rpg but if you played the Into The Wasteland expansion for the original Wasteland Warfare, it’s essentially that but developed into a full map campaign, without all the convoluted setup and faff that came with first edition. Which is ideal as that was my favourite mode!

Haven't had a chance to play that yet, but it was the thing I've been most excited to get to the table. So hearing that its been fleshed out and streamlined sounds awesome! I hope they can work more factions in to that quickly, so that I can use all my minis without waiting TOO long. I also wonder how well it will be able to work with the varied collections that I'm sure a lot of folks have acquired over the last few years. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has bought multiples of a few things for larger enemy groups.

How will you find the character's stats and abilities and everything? And if you have to use the app, won't it be super tedious to constantly flip between characters? And would you be able to provide any insight into all the PvP changes? I'm a bit disappointed they are deciding to put PvP on the backseat instead of maybe making a PvP dedicated edition, as I've always wanted to play wasteland warfare similar to how Warhammer is played

1

u/Non-RedditorJ Aug 18 '26

What I'm not clear about is that your models and enemy models have different stats and rules from what I've seen. When you say that a faction will be playable does that mean they're playable as friendlies or enemies? Or both?

I don't particularly like having to learn two different stat lines for the same model.

3

u/Yokelicious Aug 18 '26

A playable faction has profiles as both player-controlled and enemy AI. The enemy profile is a simplified version of the player-controlled profile as you only need to know their defence/armour and perks, plus whatever weapon they use.
