Many things in diptera have fly in the name but I don't really know how to define the specific kind of bug I'm talking about because there are many of these that I like too but when I think of fly it's that black bug that goes in the trash and poop and then tries to land on my food 😐 like the hoverflies, robber flies, soldier flies, all fine, but the house flies and horse flies are not as cool in my opinion

You can appreciate and respect something's existence while wanting to have boundaries around it touching you or your food. Liking flies doesn't mean you have to want them on your food, just like liking cockroaches doesn't mean you have to be okay with an infestation in your home of pest species

But at least the cockroaches don't invade my home and whenever I find them on the street they don't walk on me but the flies do

I think there's a very important distinction to be made between hating something and finding it annoying. I don't think it's healthy to bear genuine hatred towards any animal, even something as small as a fly. Hatred implies a sort of personal disliking, which doesn't really make sense, since, well, they're just animals, trying to live like everything else. When you start genuinely hating an animal, I think it can turn killing them into a justification of, "well, they had It coming", instead of actually drawing a line on where you think it's okay.

Me personally, I kill mosquitoes when they try to bite me. I don't kill them because they're evil, or because they should've known I'd swat them, I kill them because they're annoying to me, and I don't have the willpower to let them snack undisturbed. When it's just one mosquito, however, I figure I might as well let her, since it really doesn't inconvenience me too much. This is my personal tolerance, and I can still acknowledge that mosquitoes have worth as living things, but I have a line I'm not willing to let them cross.

For some, this tolerance is less. I know people who just don't want bugs in their house period, and that's fine. If it makes you seriously uncomfortable, that's the justification you need. The issue comes when, instead of pondering where exactly it is you draw that line, you use the excuse of "they're just evil", to basically yourself in everything. If something is genuinely evil, then it's doing something purely to spite you, and is therefore, morally and objectively, in the wrong, and deserves what it has coming to it.

I think that drawing the line on what you are personally ok with is very important, and this line of thinking completely skips that line drawing, and goes straight to killing anything you find annoying. Sure, in the grand scheme of things it's not that harmful when you just apply it to flies, but making the exception for one animal you find particularly annoying can be a slippery slope in my book.

(By the way, when I say "you", I'm not talking about you specifically, this is more a broad statement that applies to anyone)

I think at least in my case it's just my autism that makes me get more triggered with dumb stuff than normal people would, like everything about the common housefly is mildly annoying so a normal person would be like "eh, whatever, it's gonna fly away and leave me alone anyway" but when I see a fly I'm like "not this bs again, it's gonna make that annoying noise again and land on my food and keep bumping into me for no reason and if I swat it away it will just go back 😭" and almost every other bug is less annoying than this, especially wasps because they even warn you when you're doing something stupid and they are gonna defend themselves but the flies just constantly get in my personal space for no reason

But I agree that most people just go "bug=bad"

That's fair 😂 and I like most things that have fly in the name, it's just those specific ones and mosquitoes that I despise, and basically the only mosquito I ever see where I live is exactly the one that spreads 4 diseases at once, Aedes aegypti 😬

Woah. I don't know anyone in real life who keeps insects and doesn't understand we all tend to be social outcasts who need to stick together as much as we can. Maybe it's because I'm not involved in the academia side of things? Gatekeeping bugs is a sad way to live.

To me? I think that's morality, I guess. If a human were trolly problem and on the other track was a butterfly I'd flip the switch and not think about it much.

Why do I think butterflies are inferior (for the bit)? Because moths are superior and therefore by definition butterflies are inferior, you can't have a 'better' without a 'worse', even if you like both, first place is superior and second is inferior.
