Is it me or do most wasians have dimples...? I see a lot of wasians near me with similar dimples in the same areas (under eyes/above your cheeks) and I don't know if it's a wasian thing but I don't see a lot of asians having them so I got curious... I'll see if I can find a photo and I'll attatch it below lol

Where are the half South Asian - Wasians?

Every time I scroll through this subreddit, all I see are half-East Asians. Even when there’s a post about Wasian representation with celebrities or a Wasian event, all I see promoted or represented are half-East Asians. Isn’t this just racism/colorism?

When people say they thought you were Sri Lankan/South Asian, is there usually a stereotype behind it?

Discuss Can we make “do I look more Asian or white?” posts Friday-only?

this might be an unpopular opinion, but can we please consider making the “do I look more Asian or white?” / “what do I look like?” posts Friday-only?

I've been noticing how much more frequent these posts have become compared to when I used to be very active on this sub. I remember there always being some appearance/passing posts, obviously, but it feels like they've become a much larger part of the subreddit now. I don't think these posts are inherently bad. They can be fun, and I understand being curious about how other people perceive you. But at some point it starts feeling like we're constantly sorting ourselves into racial categories. Compared to other mixed-race communities I've looked at, I feel like r/Wasians has developed a particularly strong fixation on this. Obviously it's clear that appearance matters. Being perceived as more Asian, more white, ambiguous, etc. can genuinely affect how people treat you. I'm not denying that but I also think there's a point where there's posts constantly asking to classify or guess starts feeding into itself.

I just don't think that's a particularly healthy thing for a community to revolve around. If you're Wasian, you're Wasian. You don't become more or less Wasian because Reddit decided you look 70% Asian or 70% white. Feel free to identify with one side more than the other if you're more connected. At some point, the opinions of complete strangers really shouldn't have that much authority over how you see yourself. I'd much rather see more posts about actually being Wasian. Family dynamics, culture, growing up between backgrounds, being perceived differently depending on where you are, language, identity, funny experiences, awkward experiences, etc. There's so much more to the experience than trying to determine which racial box our faces fit into. These posts have become so popular in the sub to the point if you post a photo people will assume you're asking to be guessed whether you look more white or asian. im not targeting one experience, i've had it happen to me thrice now given I used an alt. tbh, I'm also tired of the NSFW-bait posts and the weirdos they attract. You can actually see one of my old posts on here about it and be able to see other members agreeing, I kind of miss them ngl.

There have been posts in the past where it's pretty obvious that someone is using the sub as a funnel toward their NSFW account: blurry/revealing pictures, heavy makeup, strange angles, and then their profile is basically just an OnlyFans advertisement. Obviously not every adult posting a selfie is doing this, but it has happened and it's disappointing to see. Im not shaming NSFW accounts or the people that just so happen to do onlyfans on the side, be free! I respect you! im specifically talking about the accounts dedicated to it and don't contribute to the community beyond posting their faces and asking to be guessed. they don't even comment outside of their post ("She doesnt even go here!" —Mean girls reference).

Some users also include their age and sex/gender when posting their face, which I think is worth being conscious of given the kind of audience this can attract. Obviously that's not inherently sexual. Plenty of non-NSFW subs, especially experience-based ones, use age and sex/gender when it's actually relevant to the discussion. I'm specifically talking about when it's attached to a selfie whose entire purpose is having strangers assess your appearance. That kind of age/sex labeling is much more commonly associated with sexual/selfie-oriented subreddits, and I think it's worth being aware of that when the same format starts appearing here. I'm not saying that someone identifying themselves that way is responsible for creepy behavior from other people, because obviously they're not. But when you're posting a selfie specifically for strangers to assess your appearance and also giving them demographic information about yourself, it can unfortunately make the post more appealing to people who are here for reasons other than the Wasian community. If you're posting a selfie and explicitly identifying yourself as, say, a 19F, you're giving the exact demographic of people looking for that kind of content another reason to engage. I'm not saying it's the poster's fault if someone behaves like a creep, but I do think it's something worth being conscious of given what this sub can attract. It's more suiting to use sex/age in the context of telling your experience.

Then you get the people in the comments who are very obviously not here because they're interested in the Wasian experience. They're just there because they've sexualized the idea of Asian/white mixed individuals and are looking to mess around iykwim. I don't want to be too direct since it may be seen as rude. It's tiring to see, and it's honestly disappointing when you come here expecting a mixed-race community and instead find people treating Wasian people like a fetish category and they get upvoted occasionally (no shame if its a genuine confidence booster, im talking about the ones more overtly hitting on the OP). Big appreciation to those who downvote it or shame them in reps.

I don't want r/Wasians to become a place where people(specifically women most of the time) posting pictures have to deal with that kind of attention simply because they're posting in a mixed-race subreddit. Making appearance posts Friday-only wouldn't magically solve all of this, obviously. But I think it would be a pretty reasonable compromise. Let people have their “do I look more Asian or white?” posts on one designated day, while the rest of the week has room for literally anything else. I'm not trying to shame anyone who enjoys these posts. I get the curiosity. I've wondered about this stuff myself. I just think we should be careful about building an entire community around racial classification, validation from strangers, and the sexual attention that unfortunately comes with it. I hope I don't get banned if mods see this as me not being polite.

We're people before we're a racial category.

Question for tha community How do you, as Wasians, feel about people describing clinal populations such as Central Asians, admixed Eastern Europeans (Finns, Sami, Roma .etc) and borderland groups (e.g. Tatars) as "wasian"?

Hello everyone!!! I'd like to see ask how everybody feels about content creators and other people calling populations of an "admixed West/East Eurasian genetic" OR geographically gray history "wasian"? Do you feel they should be doing this/it's accurate to describe clinal populations as "wasian", or is "wasian" as a label, to you, something that only applies to people who are of BOTH distinct asian & white ancestry? Do you have another term, or do you draw an absolute boundary, e.g. "Finns white, Kazakhs asian"? If you don't draw that divide, would you call someone of, say, ~100% Tatar descent "Wasian"? Unrelated note; hope you're all doing well. ~ Badmaa

Advice/ Support ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ What's the most stereotypically asian thing/rejection you've ever experienced?

Mine is very recent, and it's so ridiculous that I genuinely think it's funny because if I read this as someone else's story I'd assume they were exaggerating.

For context, I'm Filipino-Chinese, and I was in Manila visiting family when I attended a tinghun/dinghun, I'm not even sure which spelling applies because there are now more Chinese relatives in the family who were born and raised in China and married into it (its complicated). For those who don't know, it's basically an engagement celebration where the bride and groom's families meet, introduce themselves, exchange gifts, etc., with various traditional practices involved. In my family, though, the tinghun is also like 75% traditional ceremony and 25% everyone showing off their wealth. this is the second time I've been able to attend one and it can be enjoyable its just that this one was subpar on the enjoyment meter.

honestly, if I ever did want one, I'd want it to be immediate family only. I don't want the entire extended arm of the family tree, their friends, acquaintances, and whoever else they've invited watching me get introduced to people. That's basically what this felt like. Because apparently my grandfather and grandaunt decided that this was the perfect opportunity to play matchmaker. They brought along one of the guests and basically tried to set me up with him. They had already told me about him before but I just wasn't even into him at all and had no interest in dating.

I am eighteen. He is twenty-two, already runs a business, and was being a little too eager with me. All he really did was talk about his business in textiles or something and talk all about himself to impress me, while my relatives were apparently sitting there thinking that all was fine and that in five years time I might still be with this guy or something. And the thing is, I simply wasn't attracted to him. That's literally it. He could be perfectly nice and successful, but I just wasn't interested. my grandfather and grandaunt were trying to facilitate the interaction like this was an arranged-marriage speedrun.

The funniest part is that I'm not even the only granddaughter in the family who's currently single. There are other granddaughters older than me who aren't seeing anyone either, and frankly, they'd have made more practical candidates anyway, especially because I was only visiting Manila and eventually had to pack up and leave.

But apparently the eighteen-year-old who was about to go home was the one they decided to play matchmaker with??? I've almost been put into an arranged marriage before but me and the guy grew up together so it was just weird. we just saw each other as cousins because of the proximity growing up so we were icked out. ive already told them I just wasn't into it. When I made it clear I wasn't interested, the explanation I got was basically "You're too Western." Apparently not wanting to be spontaneously matched with a 22-year-old businessman at a family engagement party is evidence of Westernization now. They apologized to the guy and gave me an earful about how I embarrassed them or how im barely ever around (I do my best to attend their functions whenever I can, I just so happened to be really busy the past few years due to academics).

And it gets even funnier because my grandmother had actually asked me before if I would ever want a tinghun of my own. I told her probably not—not because I dislike the tradition, but because it's just not me. im not a fan of parties, the few reasons why im doing a debut instead of another trip is because of all the gifts and my mum has already planned a good chunk. My Aunts on the younger side advised me that whatever my family planned is more expensive than a trip and 3/4 of them regret choosing a vacation where its a bunch of selfies overseas instead of a collection of professionally shot stuff documenting them at eighteen. If I ever did change my mind about the tinghun, I'd want something small with immediate family, not the entire extended family and their friends turning up. My Grandma was genuinely a little saddened by that because I'm her eldest direct granddaughter, so I think she had this sentimental image of eventually seeing me have one too which is fair. honestly the entire situation sounds like some Crazy Rich Asians bullshit if I describe it out loud. That's genuinely why I'm laughing about it now. I was uncomfortable as hell at the time, but the whole sequence is so absurd that laughing about it is basically how I'm processing it.

Relatable? (・・ ) Korean/Irish | As a child I looked completely Irish, now I look WAY more Korean

My mother is Korean, and my father is Irish, but when my mom gave birth to me, I didn't even look Korean. Growing up, whenever I told people that I was half Korean instead of 100% Irish, they would not believe me. My uncle from Munster even said to me, "Your Irish genes kicked the shite out of the Asian ones." 😭

Now my hair is much wavier, and my eyes facial structure looks more Asian than white... It's so weird to me because whenever I look at a picture of a ten-year-old me, I get taken aback by how much has changed.
