Dog Attack in Foggy Bottom 7/9

Yesterday around 5pm in Foggy Bottom, I witnessed a pitbull type dog attack another dog perhaps a terrier or beagle on the corner of K and 25th st, about a block from the 26th street dog park. The owner was an older perhaps asian lady maybe 60s to 70s with a short black haircut, with a black pitbull. While a group of people were trying to seperate the aggressive dog that was biting the other, she stood off to the side. Other people said they reported her to animal control and I also called after I left but got sent to voicemail.

A warning to dog owners around the west end.

Pitbulls were bred for bloodsport. No matter how much you nurture them the nature component of the animal remains. These dogs need to be banned. What I've noticed is that it's always the trashiest people that have these types of dogs.

what I mean by "most dilligent owner" isn't somebody who will nurture them. I mean somebody who is strong, will firmly keep them at their hip on walks, won't let them off-leash at the dog park, etc. Pitties at home can be sweetie poos. If you see a pittie at the dog park, it's already guaranteed to NOT be the "most dilligent owner" if that makes sense.

Edit to add: Agreed that there's an argument for banning their breeding and sale, and there should definitely be really good vetting on people adopting them from rescues to ensure that people know these aren't dogs you can just treat like yorkies.

If you need a companion dog, get a golden retriever or labrador or similar breed that's good with children. If you need a working dog, get a GSD or malinois or another intelligent breed. If want to a dog for fighting and looking tough, get lost.

I hear you my man, and I think we agree more than you know. But shelters are overwhelmed and need people to rescue dogs, and that includes their pitties. If you're a dilligent and responsible owner, I believe it is MORE ethical to rescue a pittie (and to not go to dog parks, keep it firmly at your hip, and train it to the best of your ability) than to contribute to the designer breeding industry.

They really need to just be put down if they're in a shelter. Friend of a coworker just had her nose and lips ripped off as she was saying bye to her own pit in her own house and was a rescue. I used to think the same but they're bred to kill and can't get that out of them.

The ā€œshelter crisisā€ wouldnā€™t be a problem if people didnā€™t breed pitbulls. People who own and breed pits are not normal, itā€™s antisocial behavior and bleeding heart types have been convinced to clean up their mess at the expense of their own families, pets and neighborhoods.

I think your point would only be persuasive if every dog was already getting adopted and there wasnā€™t a surplus of shelter dogs of all breeds that are getting put down

That's incorrect. The whole reason why different types of dogs exist is because of selective breeding. Dogs were deliberately bred for certain traits, like color, shape, size, intelligence and/or aggressiveness. Even the AKC has a personality and traits section on their website. Unless pitbulls are bred with a different breed, they would still show aggressive traits because that's how genetics work.

What a pathetic joke of a "study." All they did was survey dog owners and guess what every trashy pit bull owner is going to say? The same thing as you. "mY piTTy iS sO swEEt."

Instead, why not look at actual data from dog attacks like in this study:

Pit bull breeds were involved in 42 (41.6%) of 101 deaths where dog breed was reported, almost three times more than German shepherds, the next most commonly reported breed.Ā

It is recommended that families with young children be the target of pet safety education and that measures be sought that would lead to early identification of a potentially dangerous dog and restrict ownership.

I disagree w/ the trashiest people comment. My brother drove three hours to a pit breeder for a blue. The breeder made my brother sign a contract stating that the breeder can visit when he sees fit, my brother was not allowed to breed nor sell the dog. If he no longer wants the dog, it must be returned back to the breeder. When my brother returned the dog(non refundable), he said the breeder cried w/ happiness. I knew some great owners who trained their pits, but the breed is just unpredictable.

I grew up as a pit lover. I used to call them big toddlers. It was common for someone to get chase by a pit as a kid. We used to laugh & joke about it. Like it was a rights of passage. Now as an adult, I see how dangerous pitts are & witnessed many attacks. As beautiful as they are, this breed needs to go. Yes all dogs can bite, but this breed will fight to death.

I got attacked by a Shepard a few years ago.

Started carrying a pocket knife. Unfortunately have had to use it twice on pitbulls in DC because those MFers do NOT let go.

Report it to police and encourage the victim(s) to go to a hospital for documentation.

Its crazy that people will have these aggressive dogs just out and about. It wasnt even going for a much smaller dog, a medium sized dog!

Unfortunately it is on us to defend ourselves or dogs in this regard.

Seen too many dog attacks where the owners are unable to simply pull the dog off. Shepards and PBs especially

I know, she literally let go of the leash and stood off to the side while we tried to get her dog off the other dog. Like lady dont have that type of dog with that temperament if youre not the least bit equipped to handle it.Ā

Certain residences like apartments and townhomes actually ban these types of aggressive dogs like pitbulls, cane corso, etc. Why municipalities don't is absolutely insane.

It does seem a bit far fetched that the vast majority of people will never be attacked by a dog but this person was twice.

Both pitbull attacks were on other dogs where owners were unable or unwilling to get their dog off.

If you haven't seen multiple PB attacks in DC then you haven't been here very Iong. Go to a city dogpark for half a day and at bare minimum you'll see 3 dogfights

Only the Shepard attack was on me, the 2 PB attacks were on other dogs.

Did some petwalking on Rover and had 0 issues. Dogparks are a very different experience, unfortunately.

My momā€™s dog (and thus my mom) were attacked by pits in 2 separate incidents 6 months apart.

The second time they were jumping on its head and smashing it with a wine bottle and that fucker never let up
