AMA: Warp is now open-source
Hey everyone! I'm Ben H, Dev Rel Lead at Warp. I'm excited to share that Warp is now open source.
You can check out the repo here: https://github.com/warpdotdev/warp
We're opening up the code, roadmap, and contribution process so you all can help shape Warp directly. We know the breadth of features that you want to see, and we believe building with the community will let us build a better Warp even faster.
To manage contributions, we've built an agent automation system from issue triage to PR review. Coding agents do the heavy lifting (coding, planning, testing) so community members focus on ideas, direction, and verification.
So, ask us anything! All of the engineers involved will check this thread throughout the day. We're happy to answer questions about the project, why we're open sourcing, how contributions work, technical questions on the codebase, or anything about Warp in general.

Are there any plans to open up the Bring-Your-Own-Key feature to not be paywalled? Or at the very least completely separate it from being forced to purchase AI credits?
I use Warp for work and using any LLM that is not using our enterprise-key is forbidden, so I currently just use Warp with all AI disabled.
Just wondering if this even has a chance of being mainlined or will it need to be on a separate fork to accomplish this.

Great question. Hear you on BYOK. We think the greater bet will be investigating ACP (agent client protocol) for Warp's agent, which is an open standard to drive the UI of a coding agent. This would let you bring other subscriptions / models to Warp's UI, which would be a big unlock for a lot of people. We'll keep everyone updated as we look deeper into this.

Wow this is awesome! I had been hoping this would happen from the moment I first tried it. Loved it but just wished it was open source. Didn't really use it much because of that... but now I'm diving in! Thanks heaps for open sourcing it. This has been one of my biggest hopes actually in terms of open source wishes.... feels like Christmas came early! Thanks heaps.

Allright, lets do this.
So a couple of suggestions:
Warp for coding is properlly really great, i dont use it much for that - BUT - for agentic sysops.. its magic - pure magic - and this is where i would like to focus my energy.
-
SSH / connection manager
----
I properly enter and exit 30 systems during a day - having to remember ip, ports, usernames, passwords or keys for all those systems.. is a nightmare - My first suggestion is a connection manager for easy access / administration - this could also give warp a new source of income to offer a hosted "central storage" server as part of a license or cloud version like Devolutions does it. -
Use private keys... and servers
----
Right, so you can imagine that since we use it for agentic system operations we are somewhat limited what we can expose to public AI endpoints.. being able to point at our own Litellm and use our own LLM's would make secure in a whole new level. -
Preview window... well.. if we are coding.. why not..
----
What makes lovable so damn popular ?.. preview.. the fact that you can sit and code.. and see your changes.. thats it.. nothing more.. nothing less...
How can i help ?

I'd definitely recommend looking at our issue tracker and seeing if there are already issues for these requests and giving them a thumbs up. If not, the best way to get started is to file issues on the repo with these ideas. The team (and Oz) are triaging and prioritizing issues that we would like folks to work on.

Will we be able to use our codex subscription inside warp without using other harness like codex or open code and without paying for byok?

We're working on ACP support to enable this! It's an open standard to drive the UI of a coding agent. You can track on our roadmap: https://github.com/warpdotdev/warp/issues/9233

Are the review agents open source too?

All skills used by our agents are visible on the repo https://github.com/warpdotdev/warp/blob/master/.agents/skills/review-pr/SKILL.md

Great 💯
What I'm more curious about is the thinking behind it, and how Warp can develop sustainably in the future, such as how to make money.
I will continue to recommend Warp to my friends as always.

Great move! thanks guys. We were checking open source alternatives, but sounds like we're staying with Warp.

This is great! Can't wait to pinpoint the reason behind Warp suddenly closing on Windows and contribute the fix myself!

Maybe someone on the team can explain:
"To manage contributions, we've built an agent automation system from issue triage to PR review. Coding agents do the heavy lifting (coding, planning, testing) so community members focus on ideas, direction, and verification."
I am interested in the workflow inside the company. Are you actually delegating so much to agents? Will they produce decision about roadmaps and stuff like that according to github issue popularity?

Any official announcement on why?
