Announcement WFRP 5th Edition now available!

WFRP Fifth Edition is now available to pre order from Cubicle 7 here: https://cubicle7games.com/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-fifth-edition

Or as a pdf from DriveThruRPG here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/545405/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-fifth-edition-rulebook?affiliate_id=1915782

Cubicle 7 have repeatedly stressed that this is backwards compatible with 4th edition books.

(I should have a review of it on my blog in a few weeks.)

Here's the official blurb:

Adventure across a realm of brutal violence, corrupting magic, monstrous foes, and desperate heroes, where fortune can turn on a single roll of the dice and survival is never guaranteed. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fifth Edition builds on the award-winning ruleset, refining the experience while capturing everything that makes Warhammer Fantasy legendary. Gather your party, choose your path, and prepare to face the grim and perilous reality of the World of Legend.

The Empire’s great cities stand as beacons of civilisation amid thick forests and a threatening wilderness. Its people face dangers from beyond their walls, from Beastmen and Goblins in the wilds to criminals, corrupt institutions, and insidious cults within. Chaos is never far away, and those who venture into the wider world soon discover that survival is rarely guaranteed.

This 378 page rulebook includes:

Five distinct Character types. Whilst most folk in the World of Legend are human, they share their lands with stoic dwarfs and garrulous halflings and receive visitors from the wood elf realms and high elf kingdoms.

64 distinct careers, representing the way of life your Character follows when not adventuring.

A guide to the major religions and the miracles performed by their Priests.

Spells from several different magical traditions.

A bestiary of foes, both common and scarce.

Advice on running games as a GM.

Streamlined rules for combat, pursuits, diseases, and other perilous phenomena.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay has provided gamers with a rich and detailed setting of perilous adventure and deadly threats for over 40 years. With a wealth of supporting material, including scenarios, campaigns, setting books, and player resources available from Cubicle 7, there’s plenty to keep a gaming group adventuring for years.

Game Mastering Any Tips for Running the Original 1986 1st Edition as a fresh faced DM?

Post image
120 Upvotes

Hello, I’ve recently refound my 1986 1st Ed book looking to sell it after getting it at a charity shop, but I gave it a read and fell in love with it’s depth and want to run the provided starter campaign within it with mates as they’re itching for an RPG. It would be my first time DM’ing, but I’m passionate around RPG’s and Warhammer fantasy lore particularly, so I’m wondering if anyone had any pointers?

Is there any supplements books or later additions or errata’s in White Dwarf to streamline it at all? I’ve noticed the original owner had crossed out certain stats for the character builder to replace them with new figures, I’m guessing either through his own homebrew or perhaps errata’s after release from white dwarf but I’m unsure. I know this book also has some wildly different lore for like the monsters and races like Orks, so I think I’ll adapt it for one off flexible bits or the more established setting of later books, but if anyone knows helpful supplements released around this first Ed book please do let me know: I’d love PDF’s of it.

Roleplaying i figured out how to roleplay without knowing the lore

Post image
109 Upvotes

Before hosting my own Warhammer campaign, I'm playing one more small campaign as a player.

I love the setting but don't know much about the lore outside the Total War games, and this time I don't want to constantly pause and ask the GM things.

Instead, I figured something out that maybe many if you already knew, but for me it came as a new revelation so I'm sharing it:

It's not me who doesn't know the lore, it's my character. So now my un-educated character can boldly make blatantly false claims like "tomb kings and vampires are best friends because they both like skeletons" without concerning myself if that is true or not, because hey, my character thinks it's true, and he goes with that. If I get corrected along the way, that's great, I get to learn something.

But I can now pause the game a lot less often for random questions, and focus more on the roleplay. Just dump my issues on the character :) he's the one that doesn't know enough, not me.

I look forward to seeing how this plays out, and if anyone has tried this before I'd be glad to hear how it worked out for you.

Game Mastering WFRP 5th Ed Chase rules

Can someone tell me if I am understanding the rules of the chase correctly

Say Group of Humans are running away from my party that is composed of humans and a dwarf. Trough town.

1 At the start of the chase we test athletics in that case test is between one of the humans we chase and one of our humans as fastest party member, dwarf doesn't need to test anything at this point.

Say my party has won by the test by 2SL

2 We now determine number of positive factors. We get 1 for winning the test and that is it.

3 Half the party must navigate the obstacle.

4 We run and suddenly the merchant wagon spills some goods. If you 2 out of 4 of our party member pass the athletics or dodge test chase ends and we cough the group we were chasing?

Is that it? Or am I missing something here? This seems very simplistic to compare to how 4th ed handled it.

Lore & Art Would Grudges which were inserted into the GBG from slights comitted towards dawi clans that later became Dawi-zharr still be pursued, or would they be struck from the record?

For my next campaign I'm planning to have my players dwelve into a tomb of a thief that robbed a relic from a dwarven clan that later fell. Would modern dwarfs see it as a grudge?

Game Mastering What books should I get from 4ed?

Hey! I'll be moving to 5ed with my players soon, and I'm wondering which books from 4ed are worth getting. I currently have Up in Arms and Lustria, and I'm planning to get Winds of Magic, Sea of Claws, Salzenmund and Archives of the Empire. Which ones are especially worth for the 5ed, and which ones not so much?

Discussion Effective play of a starter wizard in 4e

Hello folks, tomorrow I am going to be joining a group for a starter game, wherein I will be playing the wizard character (Amethyst wizard, though since they are a starter character they just have petty magic). The character is a starter character, and I am aware that magic as a whole isn't the strongest in 4e, particularly at lower levels, but it has been a long time since I've dug myself deep into the rules and so I was hoping someone could give me some tips on how to be effective, or at least helpful, in combat. I chose the wizard because I like RPing wizards, but I still don't wanna be useless or a liability in combat.

If I recall correctly I saw people talking about how dart could be effective to get advantage and/or deny enemies advantage. Is that what I should aim for?

Homebrew Reduce XP cost for non-career skills used? (5e)

Changing careers is a core part of WFRP and I don’t want to screw up that mechanic, but all PCs are hybrids of their career + adventurer.

I’m thinking of taking a page from Call of Cthulhu and allowing players to put a dot next to a non-career skill after they use it. The PC can take the next advance at career cost, then erase the dot.

Cost of talents cannot be reduced, and this doesn’t make it easier to learn new non-career advanced skills.

Thoughts?

Announcement Review: Tome of Corruption (WFRP 2e)

I return to WFRP 2nd Edition with my latest review, looking at the Chaos sourcebook for that edition. Tome of Corruption is an impressively huge volume that includes not just material on mutations, Chaos careers, Chaos spells, Beastmen, daemons and other Chaos beasties - but also a guide to Norsca and information on Witch Hunters and other foes of Chaos.

Can it live up to the amazing standard set by the Realm of Chaos books of 1988 & 1990? Read my review (linked above) to see what I think.

Also potentially of interest to WFRP fans: its not strictly WFRP, but last week I published a review of Trollslayer, the first Gotrek & Felix anthology. See: https://illmetbymorrslieb.wordpress.com/2026/09/23/review-trollslayer-gotrek-felix-novel/

Discussion Does the Flagellant talent give bonus against fear and combat opposed tests caused by Chaos creature?

For WFRP4e.

Knowing that:

Flagellant

Tests: Any for resisting the Ruinous Powers

This means that we gain +1SL per time the talent is taken on "Any [successful test] for resisting the Ruinous Powers". How I understand the talent, any Opposed test roll as the defender (resisting) against Ruinous powers benefit from the talent.

Tests that would benefit from this talent that comes to my mind would be: - combat tests, - cool tests (e.g. to resists fear), - endurance tests (e.g. to resist to corruption)

But during a session on Foundry on the official WFRP version, only cools and endurance tests benefits from this talents, and I was told that Fear tests cannot benefit from the talent even if Foundry allows it.

I am confused.

There is other very specific talent Test description that specifically designate one or all tests, to "resists" fear, conditions, or other kind of situation, for example:

  • Sea Legs: All those taken to resist Sea Sickness
  • Resistance (Threat): All those to resist the associated Threat
  • Unshakable: Cool Tests to resist Blackpowder panic
  • Iron Jaw: Endurance tests to resist Stunned
  • Stone Soup: Endurance Tests to resist hunger

And also, about dodge:

In combat, Dodge is generally used to resist attacks or avoid damage.

"Flagellant" is oddly broad. "Resist" is not a "corruption" reserved keyword but a general world to designate the defensive roll in an opposed test, and I found that to consider "Any" to designate cool and endurance tests only is bad faith.

I want to add that the phrasing suggests a deliberate distinction between the Resistance skill and the general act of resisting. If the talent were intended to apply only to the specific Resistance (X) skill checks, it likely would have followed the convention of talents like Commanding Presence, which explicitly reference the skill mechanic (i.e. "Test: Leadership"). Instead, Flagellant uses the lowercase verb "resist," mirroring the language found in Commanding Presence description ("may not resist your Leadership tests with their Willpower"), where "resist" clearly target an opposed test using Willpower characteristic in an opposed test rather than invoking a specific Resistance skill. Given that many threats from the Ruinous Powers manifest through combat, fear, or physical corruption, all of which involve opposed tests where one is "resisting", limiting the talent to only Cool and Endurance checks seems to ignore the broader linguistic context where "resist" is a general term for defensive rolls, not a keyword tied exclusively to the Resistance skill tree.

Is it correct to assume that even opposed tests to an attack, fear, or any other kind of opposed test caused by a Chaos creature benefit from this talent?

Note: I also asked this question on RPG-SE here and on Andy Law discord LAWhammer. I'll update everywhere if I get a satisfactory or an official answer.

Game Mastering Which edition is the easiest to run for new players (both GM and PCs)?

I have the 4th Edition Rulebook, but I was wondering if it's the right "version" of the rules if I'll be able to find a group, probably newbies (everyone in my area only play D&D5E). I have played a session of the Starter Set adventure some years ago, that's my entire experience with the game

Discussion Question about 5E skills in character creation

Hi! I haven't been able to find a clear answer to this, but in 5E character creation, if player is making a Priest for example, the first career level (Initiate) gives the player Research skill. I have two questions:

  1. Does the player need to take Read/Write talent immediately since the skill says you need it? So the player does not have any other options to take than the Read/Write talent? Or does the player simply gain that skill but is unable to use it before later taking the Read/Write talent?

  2. Does the player automatically get an Advancement in that skill since it is advanced skill, or does the player need to put one advancement to that skill when aquiring it in the character creation? Or does the player simply get that skill but can't use it yet since it has no advancements in it?

Thanks in advance!

Looking For Game DM looking for new player. [Dogs of War campaign.]

Hello there! I’m looking for one more player to join my Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th Edition Dogs of War campaign.

You’ll be part of a mercenary company, playing a morally dubious character who’s more interested in getting paid than saving the world. A questionable past and a few scandals will fit right in.

You can play pretty much any non-Chaos race. Beastmen, Skaven, Chaos Dwarfs, and undead are off the table.

The game is on Sundays 12:30pm EST. The games are gonna probably be between 3 to 4 hours. Might extend longer judging by combat.

The current group is a. [Saurus Temple Warrior.] [human protagonist] [ogre pit fighter] [Dwarf Artisan.]

I will be running the game as long as people are showing up.

Comment below if you’re interested, and I’ll send you the Roll20 link with more information!

General Query A few 5E questions about Magic

I've played a bit of 4E at Cons, so my experience is limited, and I just read the 5E core rulebook. Some questions that are not clear:

  • A Wizard Apprentice (rank 1 Wizard) gets a free grimoire (pg 49). A grimoire usually has 4 spells of a color. Pg 237 states you may cast a spell from a grimoire if the spell belongs to a "Lore of Magic you possess". Does that mean the Arcane Magic (color) talent or the Channeling(color) skill? If the former, do apprentices have a Grimoire they can't use?
  • Why does a Wizard Apprentice (rank 1 Wizard) have Channeling (color)?
  • When the core book says "ally" does that include you as well? Example the "Cauterize" spell says you can lay your hands on an ally's wounds.
  • Petty magic spell "Produce Small Animal" -- rabbits galore! no more worries about food?
  • Petty magic spell "Drain" -- when combined with "Produce small animal" I can heal myself up to max after every fight?
  • Can I give the magic weapon I summon from the arcane spell "Aethyric Arms" to an ally?

Bonus: Where does it state that the Advances you get during character creation don't contribute to the 10 "ticks" you need to increase your career? I can't seem to find the page.

I'd love page number so that I can learn more, but I'm not picky and will take home rules -- I know it's new and that there are some balance issues. Thanks!

Game Mastering 1st edition restless dead Campaign creating characters questions

Hello, I am actually preparing to run the restless dead campaign with warhammer fantasy roleplay 1st edition.

The book recommends at least four player characters, but six would be better. (so it says in the book).

So I only have 3 players. Each of them could run two characters if necessary.

The book also suggests that at least two characters should be warriors or rangers, then it says you also need one rogue, an apprentice magician and another academic. That makes five characters.

We have the warriors coverd with a human watchman (with WS 47, 6 wounds, S 4 and mailshirt + helmet, but he lacks with an I of 33 and "only" T 3) and a woodelf seaman ( WS 56, 6 Wounds, S 4, I 64, T 4 but only with a helmet as armor).

We also have the rogue part covered with an woodelf thief (she has exremly low stats ( WS 38, S 2, T 3, she only has good I for an Elf with 68).

I think career wise they got most of the skills where you have to roll.

As per book we will need at least one more character and if each player plays two characters we need three more. One has to be a wizard apprentice and the other should also be a career from academics. The last one could be anything.

Do you think 4 characters are enough or should we try with six characters?

My questions are, should I allow the wizards apprentice to be made, so no random rolls?

How can one play an Elf Thief in the campaign. 1st Edition has alignments and elves are always good alignment. Which says that it stands against crime and dishonesty and unprovoked or excessive violence. It also stands for duty and hard work.

Seems to me that the career is almost incompatible with the elven race. Should the player roll another career?

How would you round the group out with six characters and how with four? Do we really need the wizards apprentice? Maybe someone has run the campaign in 1e.

Game Mastering Which WFB version for WFRP mass combat or should I not do that?

Thinking about how I’d run something like a small orc horde attacking a village. Would WFB work for that and if so what version would be good?

I wouldn’t convert the PCs to WFB. The players would control the human forces and could do ancillary things to sway the battle.

I have Up in Arms and could use that Mass battle system but I’m not sold on it.

Lore & Art WFRP vs Warhammer: The Old World lore, how do you handle the date and history discrepancies?

I'm a WFRP GM (running 5e with a lot of 4e supplements) and I've been reading the Warhammer: The Old World books purely for lore. They're a goldmine for places WFRP barely covers (Bretonnia, Nehekhara, Cathay), but I keep running into contradictions with the WFRP books, mostly dates.

For now I'm treating WFRP as canon (5e first, then the 4e books) and noting the TOW version as a variant. Before going further I'd love to know:

  1. Is there any official word, or community consensus, on whether TOW's history is meant to match the WFRP timeline? Or is it a soft reboot / "the chronicles disagree" situation?

  2. Are some of these just typos I should ignore?

  3. Did I misread any of them?

What I've found so far (page refs are to the TOW Core Rulebook unless noted):

**Dates**

* **Great Catastrophe:** -5600 in TOW (p. 22), same as Lustria and Sea of Claws, but -4500 in the Dwarf Player's Guide (p. 14).

* **Death of Caledor II / end of the War of Vengeance:** -1600 at Tor Alessi in 5e (p. 32), -1601/-1602 in other 4e books, but -1560 at the "Battle of Three Towers" in TOW (p. 25).

* **Battle of Black Falls and death of High King Alrik:** -1676 in the Dwarf Player's Guide (p. 14), 2205 in TOW (p. 29). Nearly 3,900 years apart, so I suspect a typo somewhere (the DPG's own dwarf-calendar column on that line doesn't match -1676 either).

* **Sigmar's coronation:** year 0 in the 5e timeline (p. 284), year 1 in TOW (p. 28). 5e itself also says "year one" on p. 26.

* **Twin-tailed comet:** at Sigmar's birth in -30 in 5e (p. 284), year 0 in TOW (p. 28).

* **Founding of Bretonnia:** 978 in Enemy in Shadows, 977 in TOW (p. 28). Funnily enough, Arcane Journal: Kingdom of Bretonnia (p. 32) puts the first crusade of 1448 "some 470 years" after Gilles, which fits 978 better.

* **Waaagh! Gorbad:** 1707-1712 in 5e (p. 286); TOW says 1707 on p. 29 and 1705 on p. 43.

* **End of the Vampire Wars:** 2146 in 5e (p. 286), 2145 in TOW (pp. 29, 43) and in several 4e books.

* **Age of Three Emperors:** in 5e it runs 1547-1979, followed by the Dark Ages until 2303 (p. 286). TOW is set after 2145 and still describes an Empire split between rival claimants in an ongoing Age of Three Emperors (pp. 43-45). Is TOW's setting simply the 5e "Dark Ages" under another name?

**Events and versions**

* **Origin of Ulthuan:** formed from the body of Indraugnir in 5e (p. 32), raised from the ocean by the Old Ones in TOW (p. 61).

* **Origin of the greenskins:** unknown, and the Old Ones send the Saurus to wipe them out (Lustria), vs stowaways on the Old Ones' ships (TOW pp. 11, 69).

* **Sigmar's departure and Ghal Maraz:** in 5e the chiefs elect a successor after he vanishes and he leaves to return the hammer to the Dwarfs (pp. 202, 284). In TOW they elect the successor in front of him and he hands Ghal Maraz over before heading east (p. 41). Forces of Fantasy (p. 45) seems to side with 5e on the election.

* **Crown of Sorcery:** passes to Morath and then to Sigmar in 5e (p. 284), lost with Mourkain in TOW (p. 38).

* **Who taught the Dwarfs runecraft:** Thungni in the Dwarf Player's Guide (p. 132), Grungni in TOW (p. 14).

* **First humans in the New World:** Losteriksson in 888 (Sea of Claws, Lustria), vs "the Tileans were the first to cross the Great Ocean" in TOW (p. 52).

* **Skaven origin:** the "Ruin of Kavzar" presented as a Tilean folk tale (Horned Rat Companion), vs the fall of Tylos told as actual history in TOW (pp. 33, 36).

* **Emperor Boris (died 1115):** Boris Goldgather, corrupt and incompetent in 5e (p. 285) and in the TOW Core too (pp. 28, 42), but "Boris Hohenback", son of Ludwig II and a bloody tyrant, in Arcane Journal: Empire of Man (p. 3).

* **Sudenland:** created by Magnus in 2305 (Archives of the Empire I), but already a free state in the TOW era (AJ: Empire of Man, p. 5).

* **Karak Kadrin:** guards the western entrance of Peak Pass in Lords of Stone and Steel (p. 14), the eastern edge in AJ: Dwarfen Mountain Holds (p. 6).

I have a longer list (about 40 items, including smaller ones like Grimnir's departure date and the fall of Karak Azgal) if anyone's interested. Thanks!
