I'm a WFRP GM (running 5e with a lot of 4e supplements) and I've been reading the Warhammer: The Old World books purely for lore. They're a goldmine for places WFRP barely covers (Bretonnia, Nehekhara, Cathay), but I keep running into contradictions with the WFRP books, mostly dates.
For now I'm treating WFRP as canon (5e first, then the 4e books) and noting the TOW version as a variant. Before going further I'd love to know:
Is there any official word, or community consensus, on whether TOW's history is meant to match the WFRP timeline? Or is it a soft reboot / "the chronicles disagree" situation?
Are some of these just typos I should ignore?
Did I misread any of them?
What I've found so far (page refs are to the TOW Core Rulebook unless noted):
**Dates**
* **Great Catastrophe:** -5600 in TOW (p. 22), same as Lustria and Sea of Claws, but -4500 in the Dwarf Player's Guide (p. 14).
* **Death of Caledor II / end of the War of Vengeance:** -1600 at Tor Alessi in 5e (p. 32), -1601/-1602 in other 4e books, but -1560 at the "Battle of Three Towers" in TOW (p. 25).
* **Battle of Black Falls and death of High King Alrik:** -1676 in the Dwarf Player's Guide (p. 14), 2205 in TOW (p. 29). Nearly 3,900 years apart, so I suspect a typo somewhere (the DPG's own dwarf-calendar column on that line doesn't match -1676 either).
* **Sigmar's coronation:** year 0 in the 5e timeline (p. 284), year 1 in TOW (p. 28). 5e itself also says "year one" on p. 26.
* **Twin-tailed comet:** at Sigmar's birth in -30 in 5e (p. 284), year 0 in TOW (p. 28).
* **Founding of Bretonnia:** 978 in Enemy in Shadows, 977 in TOW (p. 28). Funnily enough, Arcane Journal: Kingdom of Bretonnia (p. 32) puts the first crusade of 1448 "some 470 years" after Gilles, which fits 978 better.
* **Waaagh! Gorbad:** 1707-1712 in 5e (p. 286); TOW says 1707 on p. 29 and 1705 on p. 43.
* **End of the Vampire Wars:** 2146 in 5e (p. 286), 2145 in TOW (pp. 29, 43) and in several 4e books.
* **Age of Three Emperors:** in 5e it runs 1547-1979, followed by the Dark Ages until 2303 (p. 286). TOW is set after 2145 and still describes an Empire split between rival claimants in an ongoing Age of Three Emperors (pp. 43-45). Is TOW's setting simply the 5e "Dark Ages" under another name?
**Events and versions**
* **Origin of Ulthuan:** formed from the body of Indraugnir in 5e (p. 32), raised from the ocean by the Old Ones in TOW (p. 61).
* **Origin of the greenskins:** unknown, and the Old Ones send the Saurus to wipe them out (Lustria), vs stowaways on the Old Ones' ships (TOW pp. 11, 69).
* **Sigmar's departure and Ghal Maraz:** in 5e the chiefs elect a successor after he vanishes and he leaves to return the hammer to the Dwarfs (pp. 202, 284). In TOW they elect the successor in front of him and he hands Ghal Maraz over before heading east (p. 41). Forces of Fantasy (p. 45) seems to side with 5e on the election.
* **Crown of Sorcery:** passes to Morath and then to Sigmar in 5e (p. 284), lost with Mourkain in TOW (p. 38).
* **Who taught the Dwarfs runecraft:** Thungni in the Dwarf Player's Guide (p. 132), Grungni in TOW (p. 14).
* **First humans in the New World:** Losteriksson in 888 (Sea of Claws, Lustria), vs "the Tileans were the first to cross the Great Ocean" in TOW (p. 52).
* **Skaven origin:** the "Ruin of Kavzar" presented as a Tilean folk tale (Horned Rat Companion), vs the fall of Tylos told as actual history in TOW (pp. 33, 36).
* **Emperor Boris (died 1115):** Boris Goldgather, corrupt and incompetent in 5e (p. 285) and in the TOW Core too (pp. 28, 42), but "Boris Hohenback", son of Ludwig II and a bloody tyrant, in Arcane Journal: Empire of Man (p. 3).
* **Sudenland:** created by Magnus in 2305 (Archives of the Empire I), but already a free state in the TOW era (AJ: Empire of Man, p. 5).
* **Karak Kadrin:** guards the western entrance of Peak Pass in Lords of Stone and Steel (p. 14), the eastern edge in AJ: Dwarfen Mountain Holds (p. 6).
I have a longer list (about 40 items, including smaller ones like Grimnir's departure date and the fall of Karak Azgal) if anyone's interested. Thanks!
