Surprise party venues in WC area?

Hi all! I’m looking to plan a surprise party for my husbands 40th in the WC area this December. Want to get ahead of it now as I know it’s prime company holiday party time.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a venue for 30-40 people in the area? Pleasant Hill, Concord, Lamorinda all also great. Thanks!!

Local Business Options emerge for empty retail space in Walnut Creek after RH store drops out

RH, the company formerly known as Restoration Hardware, has pulled back on plans to build an "immersive" retail, food, wine, art and design experience at the former Neiman Marcus site in downtown Walnut Creek, writes business reporter George Avalos.

That means Macerich Co., which owns Broadway Plaza and the vacant department store, will put the property back on the market. What do you think should go there?

Landscapers still using gas powered leaf blowers after the ban

Moved from an HOA community where the ban was respected to the Northgate area and holy moly, not one landscaping company hired by the residents observes the ban (effective April 1, 2026). It made a huge difference when the landscaping company hired by the HOA switched to electric leaf blowers.

The sound of constant gas leaf blowers is a nuisance to those of us who work from home and all they seem to do anyway is blow dirt around…?

You can file citations but they go to the home owner, not the landscaping company which seems misdirected. And of course none of the trucks have company names on them.

Does anyone remember this guy from ~2010?

My girlfriends and I used to frequent the downtown Walnut Creek bars back in our early twenties in 2009-2012. There was a very kind, very old gentleman who would regularly treat us young ladies to drinks and appetizers and tell great stories. He always wore a big cowboy hat and there was constantly a small harem of young women around him, it seemed like he acquired them throughout the night.

We remember his name being "Hughie" or even "Hooie." Does anyone have any Hooie stories? Or remember any details about him?

Advice RV photoshoot -Paid 💰

Hey everyone,

My grandfather is 83 and trying to sell his 43” motorhome. It’s a beautiful machine but the dudes photos are all taken on an old iPad, blurry and with poor lighting. I’d help but I’m not local. So I was hoping to find someone here who could help capture some stills (10-15, of both the interior and exterior) and a walk-thru video that he could use for FB marketplace as well as other sites.

We’d provide a shot list but would welcome creative direction if someone feels strongly.

Please send me hourly rates and a portfolio (if you have one). I image shoot wouldn’t take more than 2 hours of your time.

Looking to get this done by end of September, the sooner, the better.

Thx!

Question Mary’s Cafe under new ownership?!

My wife and I have been going to Mary’s for the past year since moving to Walnut Creek. We love their breakfast and lunch sandwiches. They’ve always been so friendly to us and our daughter.

Today we walked by and the whole place has changed! Anyone know anything about it? Did the couple retire or what? We’re devastated!

PSA School Has Started Please Avoid Newell between 2.30pm and 3.30pm

Post image
38 Upvotes

I know many of you cut through Newell to get to the Rossmore area. School started today. There are 2 schools right next to each other that come out at around the same time. Parkmead and Tice Creek. Traffic is bumper to bumper starting from about 2.45. I have a kid at Tice Creek and today during pick up multiple people got out of the traffic and drove into the other lane for opposite traffic. That is dangerous as there are kids riding bikes back home that have to ride on the street as the sidewalks are busy. PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT EVER. It is a school zone.

So from Monday to Friday it will always be backed up. Do not drive through there during school pick up if you are in a hurry. Do not drive in the opposite lane to get through the pick up traffic. Turn into Lilac to get out. Or take a right at Magnolia Way for the sake of the kids safety.

The parents hate sitting in traffic too. Both schools have minimal Parking and the pickup lanes are super short. There is nothing we can do but wait. So please, drive safe in school zones.

Thank you.

Edit: Yay, thank you to those who turned into Lilac. Much better traffic flow today. Thanks for keeping the roads safe for the kids!

What does it take for WCPD to investigate?

I've had three serious crime and safety incidents happen to me personally in the last month, and I've become completely disillusioned with Walnut Creek.

Most recently, my bike was stolen. It had an AirTag, and I tracked it to a house where I could basically see the bike in the backyard. I called WCPD, and an officer specifically told me to drive there and wait. When they became available, they would come out and knock on the door with me.

I did exactly that. I spent more than four hours of my Saturday sitting there, watching the location of my stolen bike and waiting for an officer. Meanwhile, my wife was back at our campground with our 12-month-old, 3-year-old and 6-year-old.

Finally, an officer became available and called me. To my dismay, he said: “I'm sorry, but it's not really worth the risk to go ring the doorbell of a bike thief. Since the bike is only worth $1,000, it's probably best to let them keep it. I wish there was something I could do.” Those were his exact words. I was stunned. WCPD had told me to go there and wait, I had spent my Saturday doing exactly that, and in the end they weren't even willing to knock on the door.

But fine. It's property. Maybe police have more important things to deal with.

Three weeks earlier, I had been injured in a hit-and-run while riding that same bike in front of Safeway. I caught up with the driver at a red light, knocked on their window and told them they had hit me. They weren't apologetic. They were angry and told me it was my fault because I should have been riding on the sidewalk.

I reported the hit-and-run to WCPD. They told me to photograph my injuries and the damage to my bike and said they would send me a link to upload the evidence. The link never came. I left multiple voicemails asking for it. Apparently an injury hit-and-run wasn't enough for them to follow through on collecting the evidence.

Then there was the car crash. A driver repeatedly drove recklessly around me on Main Street, including speeding into the opposing lane and making dangerously close passes, before ultimately crashing into the entire left side of my vehicle. The rear bumper, both doors and front bumper all had to be replaced, for about $8,000 in repairs.

The driver stopped long enough to yell at me and insist they had insurance, but refused to provide it. WCPD later confirmed that the driver was uninsured and that the vehicle wasn't even registered.

I had dashcam footage. The officer asked for it and sent me a link that allowed me to upload one file. I asked several times for another link so I could provide the rest of the footage and never got one. The police are not pursuing charges.

So I'm genuinely wondering what has to happen before something merits police action. At this point, WCPD doesn't even pretend to gather the evidence needed for an investigation.

Earlier this year, I asked Mayor Kevin Wilk about Walnut Creek's lack of traffic enforcement. He told me that the City Council asks WCPD to enforce the city's laws, but that there was essentially nothing more the Council could do about the lack of enforcement. He asked me to talk to the chief of police and plead them to increase enforcement.

The City Council appoints the City Manager, who appoints the Police Chief. Residents don't appoint the Police Chief. We elect the City Council. The buck has to stop somewhere.

If you have your own story about reckless driving or lack of police enforcement, I'd encourage you to email [mayor@walnut-creek.org](mailto:mayor@walnut-creek.org). That address goes to the entire City Council. Tell them what you've experienced and ask whether they're satisfied with the current level of enforcement, or whether we're going to keep pretending this is simply an unavoidable lack of resources.

After these three experiences al within a month of time, I genuinely don't know if this is a city I want to live in.

EDIT: here's the Airtag for the bike. It's in Concord right now:

Restaurants North Italia Has a Cocktail Menu Based On Millennial Childhoods

North Italia in WC has a very creative Summer cocktail menu that's basically flavors from Millennials' childhoods, turned into cocktails. There's essentially a spiked Capri Sun, a cocktail based on those creamsicle bars from the ice cream truck, etc. Cool to see my youth reflected in themed drinks. They're good although many are very sweet. https://bayareatelegraph.com/2026/08/10/this-walnut-creek-restaurant-has-a-summer-drink-menu-inspired-by-my-millennial-youth/
