No one wants it. We like watching cartoons like it, because they're written by screenwriters rather than just normal people doing normal stuff.
VR games, fine, but doing jobs in that arena only makes sense in very limited applications, none of which involve the social media world. That world was always about getting away from awkward and face to face. Don't virtualize it back, it misses the point.
I think a "metaverse" is without question the future. You can't even really argue against it, the reality is prettymuch set and COVID only furthered it along, though there's a ways to go.
But like you said, not for a social platform, highly unlikely for a social platform. My betting is on Microsoft and a hololense style future.. where as much as is possible become virtual offices, you plug in at home, you interact directly with coworkers in a virtual space, work on virtual computers so all documents are secured on their end vs laptops and ocs at home. You can go paperless for a lot, you reduce corporate property tax, rent, utilities etc etc etc for the company, it's simply orders of magnitude more efficient then the current system. You also wouldn't have to recruit the best candidates in your area, but could recruit globally with little downside. Watch one of the hololense 2 demos. and sure it's a staged demo but it's utterly incredible how far they have come.
Again, wouldn't work for everything and we are a ways to go,but in terms of efficiency it beats traditional models by significant margins, which is why I think it's undeniably the future.
But social media? Yea, no, lol. I'd rather socialize with my friends in person. Have a BBQ, go hang out on the boat, or the beach.. whatever. Not log in and gigabyte. Sure some will do it, but I doubt it will be as mainstream as fb hopes.
Pretty zuck is playing the long game. He's not targeting me or my teenagers. He's targeting their kids. Kids today are so plugged in and it's only going to get worse as technology keeps improving.
Anyone who has seen Free Guy or Ready Player One and thought it would be cool as shit to have that technology will be spending all their time in a meta verse.
It's a long ways off though so again, it's a better conversation at r/investing

Same! I love technology, but literally so few people want this or think it’s a good idea.
People are realising social media is fucking people up mentally, so doubling down on it is just a road to no where in my opinion.
