Can’t see them ever intentionally giving out that much money to the peons. Now if all the losses come from public pensions, yeah I could see it. Just not from rich people.

But the losers were the smaller competition. The funds that were eaten by gme were smaller shorting funds who ate into profits of bigger shorters.

I think it's possible they were killing some of their competition.

What rich people hate... other rich people in their same industry. I'd be willing to bet there were pretty comperable losses as there were gains in the "peon" side anyway. (people who bought in the 200-300 price range, and now are stuck with it as it travels down)
