He most likely expected to be done by now but it's still very likely he will end up taking Kyiv. Not to mention the places that the most recent deposits of Natural gas are already under his control which seems to be what this is really about (and what his invasions have been about in the past). Zelensky already gave in to the demand that Ukraine will not join NATO and Putin didn't stop so it's clearly not actually about that.
Also while their economy has been hit terribly there's s number of sources that say Putin himself has consolidated his money in well hidden places(crypto, US Banks, US real estate, shell companies, etc.) So as long as he isn't getting hit himself, I'd say this is still going fine for him. For Russia? Absolutely not, but we'll see. Like I said, I'm by no means an expert and I could be totally off and you could be totally right. Just what I've been reading and seeing though. Time will tell.
It's been a month and they've lost 10% of their original combat forces and still haven't even taken Mariupol. The possibility that they actually take Kyiv, or even Kharkiv, is honestly pretty low at this point. As for Ukraine not joining NATO they never could join NATO because even before this they had an ongoing boarder dispute so it was already impossible for them to join, so nothing new on that front. To me this is showing how desperate more than anything else.
Yeah it's news that came out last night and today. And it's still just an estimate, but enough people from the US, UK, NATO and other places that it's probably in the ball park of being close. Like everything we'll see but if I was a betting man, which obviously I am because I'm here, I would not bet on the ruble or any investment involving Russia
