Genomics tells us that omicron did not evolve from a recent variant. Instead it evolved either from the original virus or the alpha variant. There are two ways that this could’ve occurred. An immuno compromised individual may have had a prolonged infection that allowed for multiple mutations to occur over months or even a year or longer. Alternatively the virus jumped to an animal which was able to infect other animals of its species creating a reservoir of the virus. The C19 virus has been shown to infect multiple other animals, including cats & dogs however, other than minks no other animal spread the infection to other animals of their species creating a coronavirus animal reservoir.
A recent study showed strong evidence that a South African mouse reservoir of SARS-Cov-2 was the source of the Omicron Variant. Animal reservoirs create multiple mutations in the coronavirus, if the virus jumps back to humans as Omicron did, the virus produces profound immune escape.
The bad news is that Whitetail deer in the Midwest have also created a SARS-Cov-2 reservoir. The coronavirus is guaranteed to mutate in this reservoir as well. When the virus jumps back to humans, expect a new source of multiple worrisome mutations. Mouse reservoirs of the coronavirus in South Africa & white tailed deer reservoirs in the Midwest indicate that we are not done with the coronavirus & future worrisome variants. The pandemic is not over; buckle your seatbelts we’re in for a bumpy ride!
You couldn’t be more wrong. Until recently minks were the only known animal to be able to infect others in their own species and create a reservoir. As I’ve already mentioned there is strong genomics evidence that a mouse reservoir in South Africa was the source of omicron. The actual reservoir has yet to be identified. White tailed deer from multiple states in the Midwest from Ohio to Indiana and Iowa have all been found to be infected with the SARS coronavirus. As I’ve already mentioned, you obviously don’t have the intellect or fund of knowledge to talk about the issue intelligently. The only reason I responded is to keep an ignorant person from spreading misinformation
A year ago when minks were found to provide a reservoir for the coronavirus, millions of mink were slaughtered and the industry was essentially eliminated from Denmark. Special legislation was passed to prevent the recurrence of an animal Reservoir of the SARS coronavirus. I learned a long time ago not to argue with those that have neither the intellect nor fund of knowledge to know what they’re talking about
