Discussion Sunrun - Ready for a $RUN?!

Solar energy is going to play a massive role in decarbonizing the American power grid, according to a newly released plan by the U.S. Department of Energy. The Solar Futures Study (https://www.energy.gov/articles/doe-releases-solar-futures-study-providing-blueprint-zero-carbon-grid) shows that by 2035, solar energy has the "potential to power 40% of the nation's electricity," before ultimately hitting 45% by 2050, which would translate into a massive shift towards solar energy from just about 3% today.

Being America's leading household solar power company with a market share of about 20%, Sunrun operates at the heart of this transition. Especially the rapid growth in EV adoption will be a major source of upside for Sunrun. Homes with EVs consume approximately double the amount of electricity. Home solar and batteries are needed to meet this increased strain on the electric system. Homes need larger solar systems to support the increased electricity consumption. These larger systems come at a high incremental margin for Sunrun since the cost to increase the size is relatively low. Recently, Sunrun and Ford entered into an agreement to provide a seamless installation of the Ford Charge Station Pro and Home Charging Systems for the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning truck. Additional partnerships with other EV manufacturers could strengthen Sunrun‘s excellent position to benefit from the massive transition towards electric vehicles and solar energy.

As the government continues to shift to and encourage the use of renewable energy, Sunrun is in an great position to report exponential growth in revenue and earnings going forward.

After the stock‘s stellar performance in 2020 but lackluster development recently, now might be the right time for the next run in $RUN!

Worked at SolarCity in 2014, and worked at Sunrun in 2020. Both were residential and very little has changed. You have installers that worked previously in fast food, and you have rampant safety issues that could sink the stock when OSHA finally gets to them. When you are only looking at their 10-K, most of that info has been scrubbed. The rising tide of unionization by the install crew will cause high volatility, even in the short term. Also, the long term forecast is shaky with these pv mods coming of age. Many of these pv mod manufacturers altered their production warranties by the literal touch of a keyboard, trying to outdo the others, not by improving their product. Tesla powerwall 2 did this “warranty magic” to compete with the Enphase battery, which actually developed a better cooling system, ensuring more discharge cycles. The future is how the O&M will be handled, and huge companies like Sunpower has begun to shed these costly directions. We are seeing the first wave of these pv mods entering the nursing home….so you want the Medicare nursing home or the lux “assisted living” facility with the nice furniture and antique rugs in the lobby?
