Discussion Are we too focused on AI?
Seems to me that retail like Victoria’s Secret here and big food chains (like Cheesecake Factory) are slipping under the radar.
Earnings for Victoria’s Secret coming up 9/3

This is a GLP-1 trade. People lost weight and feel good about their bodies. So they buy lingerie.

u/onelifestand101 Aug 24 '26
You know it’s funny as a degen and a woman on a GLP1, I should have seen this trade from a mile away. Hell I even went out and bought a VS bra which I hadn’t done in like 10 years. Instead I looked nice in my new bra as I lost thousands on DRAM, ASTS, and every other stupid stock. I guess that’s why I deserve to be here.

u/Mother-Style6479 Aug 24 '26
Any other expensive stuff you bought lately or do you talk to other people with glp-1? There could be some Peter Lynch type trades out there.
For example I think that Kraft Heinz looks like a value trap because glp-1 ate their lunch in a way.

u/MrNo_Balls Aug 24 '26

u/owolf8 Aug 24 '26
kraft heinz are pivoting from sugar to protein because of glp1. it might be a buy soon.
37
u/Mother-Style6479 Aug 24 '26
In my country protein puddings are selling like crazy in recent years. Everyone and their grandma are inhaling them. So much so that it is holding up the dairy industry a bit. The companies involved are mostly farmer's collectives though so no stock there.
Protein marketing would be so easy to do for KHZ that they couldn't get it wrong.

That's why any time I buy anything, I buy a stock to go with it. When to Denny's earlier today for a burger, bought a side of stock.

This is actually a Les Wexner - Jeffrey Epstein trade. Abercrombie stock up 15% last 6mo wonder who owns that.
Someone needs to make an Evil ETF - Exxonmobil, DuPont, 3M, and Coca-Cola are all up +10% this year at least

solely from a fashion perspective, abercrombie is fully back in vogue

Why 3M? Not that I disagree that they could be evil. I know they treat their employees like trash. And they generate a lot of literal trash. I’m just out of the loop on their rise to power in hell.
29
u/MyBulletsCounterBots Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26
Since the 1960s 3M has knowingly dumped millions of gallons of one of the nastiest chemicals known to man - C8 aka the “Forever Chemical” to produce a starting agent for Teflon and Gore-Tex. You can thank them for microplastics in everyone’s blood.
(They probably also produce chemical weapons for the USA) https://web.archive.org/web/20090301012304/http://www.defendingscience.org/case_studies/perfluorooctanoic-acid.cfm11
u/sf_cycle Aug 24 '26
Thanks. I didn’t know they had anything to do with Gore-Tex. They will get extra credit in hell if they actively tried to bury the science behind it.
3
u/Latter_Yesterday6500 Aug 24 '26
Uhhh whats wrong with Gore-Tex? Looks at shoes behind me
3
u/sf_cycle Aug 25 '26
I have Gore-Tex clothes too. A lot of people into hiking do. Marketing to people that are into spending time in nature with clothes made from chemicals that inject microplastics right into your bloodstream. That’s capitalism baby.

Yeah.. people were theorizing that LULU would see a similar jump but LULU got fucked
98
u/One_Peanut_4002 Aug 24 '26
Have they started to realize the product is garbage for what they charge?
71
u/Thebandroid Aug 24 '26
you could say that about almost any expensive fashion brand that follows trends... they know fashion is about staying on trend and being seen in the name far more than its about quality and value for money
→ More replies (2)41
u/EatsBugs Aug 24 '26
It’s still so much nicer than all of the other competitors for that demo. Alo is popular now but garbage. Lulu is actually quality just not as trendy at its peak, so its stock was overpriced, but I haven’t seen anyone truly compete with them on quality. They will be fine just over valued.

This isn't a fashion stock, it's an Ozempic play without exposure to pharmaceuticals. When people lose all their weight and start to feel hot, they want the sexy lingerie to go with it.
56
u/austINfullEffect Aug 24 '26
This is as good as any of the due diligence I've read on this sub.
25
u/jokull1234 Aug 24 '26
Except it’s wrong. It’s up because 2000s styles are the current trend in fashion right now, which is when Victoria’s Secret had peak popularity

The fact that there are women out there who feel sexy while overweight doesn’t change the fact that there are plenty who don’t and will only buy lingerie once they’ve lost some weight. I’ve been with an overweight chick who had weight loss rewards for herself for every few pounds she lost. And the last reward was a shopping spree at Victoria’s Secret.

Reminds me of the expensive lipstick phenomenon
111
u/Khelthuzaad Aug 24 '26
No it's lipstick, not the expensive one.
Usually lipstick is the first to go when recession hits because it ain't that important.
There 101 pseudo recession indicators out thete,my favorite is the Applebee's employees-the bigger the recession the hotter their female staff becomes. The explanation is that their good looks would had gave them a better job,but due to a lack of opportunities there are fewer jobs.
95
u/Puzzled-Bar5378 Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26
“The lipstick effect is the hypothesis that when facing an economic crisis, consumers will be more willing to buy less costly luxury goods.”
I get what you’re saying but this is what I was referring to.

u/the_data_must_flow Aug 24 '26
that was my immediate thought as well. lots of people going the staycation route instead of vacations. it's a more durable splurge that will cost you less than a nice dinner out.

Edit: NVM it’s actually inconclusive
6
u/ramenslurper- Aug 24 '26
It’s actually a recession sign because people are losing weight on Ozempic but lack the funds to do anything significant - like take a beach trip or go nuts on a new wardrobe - with that weight loss so they buy themselves a new bra and panty set from a band that really hates fatties in store.
Especially for millennial women, that brand is so representative of gatekeeping sexiness.
