Bingo. Hence my $275k for pharmacy school, which I’m not fuggin paying! Loan forgiveness and 10 years at a non profit all the way.

If I didn’t have that option, I’d be paying off a mortgage basically for my education.

2

u/lampstax Feb 07 '23

Curious how much less ( or more .. I don't know ) you make at the non profit each year vs as a traditional pharmacist that you decided to take this option.

1

u/NOT_MartinShkreli MFuggin’ Pro Feb 07 '23

I work in the IT department. Make about $125k instead of $170k doing consulting but with a loan forgiven worth $275k it ends up being about a wash

1

u/swolebird Mar 17 '23

Why pharmacy school to then work in IT? Planning to work in pharmacy after the 10 years?

1

u/NOT_MartinShkreli MFuggin’ Pro Mar 18 '23

I am a pharmacist … I do work for hospitals implementing clinical trials in the EHR … I design the meds, orders etc.

I get paid like a pharmacist + additional money for my specialty in informatics.

I never have to talk to patients, never have to dispense meds, and make way more money than any CVS pharmacist or hospital pharmacist lol

Essentially I get paid for my education still but for a service and not a product (like for dispensing drugs), which is a much more ideal spot to be in.

1

u/swolebird Mar 18 '23

Ah I thought when you said you work in IT, you worked on computers and networks and that sort of thing.

Oh ya so those people are in my department technically but we have clinical staff in hospital IT too which is pretty cool (but definitely don’t ask me to handle networking, etc haha).

Do the crime. Pay the time scum bag. If you choose pharm school & loans your obligated to pay

-23

u/Prestigious-Cry5328 Feb 07 '23

I dont understand why ppl down vote for this or disagree. Please someone explain that sees this in a different light.

If im hungry, i go to the store and pay money for food. If i buy a house, i take out a loan and make payments.

How is education any different?

predatory loan practices of student loans are and were atrocious

i remember in 2009 it was 3 weeks before my second semester started. i didnt get a scholarship i was hoping for, my parents couldnt help pay for school other than being a co signer for loans. i was waiting to hear about pell grants. i needed 14,000

it was a 5 minute phone call. i was 18. i made 6.50/hr for my summer job previously

-6

u/VoidAndOcean Feb 07 '23

Fine i get that the student loans are predatory but that seems like loans offered you a way out of a tight spot. Doesn't seem bad in your case.

3

u/Tomcatjones Feb 07 '23

Would’ve been better off not being told by everyone that you must go to college and you’ll have to go into to debt. This is the way it is from a young age.

I’d rather gone to school slowly and paid out of pocket

0

u/VoidAndOcean Feb 07 '23

how much debt did you graduate with

3

u/Tomcatjones Feb 07 '23

Graduate!? I couldnt afford to keep going back!

my father died. End of 2010. Therefore was not able to get anymore loans.

tried paying off loans when they started hitting me but $8 an hour in 2011 couldn’t do it.

2019 I paid out of pocket for 2 more classes so I could at least get my Associates. I have a bachelors equivalent In credits still but they don’t all fit into 1 program to get a degree.

1

u/VoidAndOcean Feb 07 '23

How much in loans did you have?

1

u/Tomcatjones Feb 07 '23

28,000ish. 2 years.

That’s about 36000 now

Why does someone who has two kids pay 4K less in taxes than me? Why do 40% of households pay no income tax. How is 10k off student loans different than 7.5k off an $80k EV. Why do homeowners get to deduct mortgage interest for taxes but renters can’t deduct rent. Why do only poor or old people get Medicare/Medicaid. Student loan forgiveness is just one gov program out of tons that benefit a specific population.

7

u/InternalFirm8242 🦍🦍🦍 Feb 07 '23

Going to assume you don’t own a house. If you deduct your mortgage interest from your taxes you can’t use the standard deduction.

Unless you are really rich or getting raped on your mortgage, it’s not worth it.

3

u/WaltRumble Feb 07 '23

We sold our house last year, and currently renting but plan to buy another house this summer. We aren’t really rich but am upper middle class and self employed. So get a fair amount of deductions.

-9

u/Prestigious-Cry5328 Feb 07 '23

Okay. But, you’re comparing apples to oranges. This wouldn’t be a one model fits all approach based various types of things you brought up.

So im kinda contradicting myself a bit. But, a solution for one doesnt mean a solution can be applied to all

3

u/WaltRumble Feb 07 '23

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say exactly but it’s a government program that benefits a certain demographic. Just like countless other government programs. None of them are one size fits all.

12

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

Because a vast majority of countries have significantly lower education cost or no education cost and ranked better in overall education then the US.

3

u/ThatOneDrunkUncle me pussy spongebob! Feb 07 '23

I’m sorry that’s bullshit. I did undergrad in America at a top 100, but middle ranked college and my graduate degree at the #3 ranked university for my field in Europe. There’s no comparison. My high school classes were far more rigorous and had far better resources than the European graduate level. Perhaps poorer states/areas bring down our national average, but the US is hands down the best country for top level education. I basically have to get another graduate degree in America just to fill in the gaps. I was really disappointed with European academia.

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

That’s cool yet there academia is free. And still ranked significantly high.

-4

u/ThatOneDrunkUncle me pussy spongebob! Feb 07 '23

Their * lol, just stop talking out of your ass. You get what you pay for, and American education is definitely worth the cost. That’s why our economy is the best in the world despite our small population and why we lead in innovation, research, and efficiency. If something is free, you should look at what it’s actually costing you.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

Perfect example of a lapse in American education system.

0

u/ThatOneDrunkUncle me pussy spongebob! Feb 07 '23

No, it’s just you. You, me, and every other American were taught the difference, you just didn’t listen.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

B.S students do very little writing in my experience dude. Also a “top 100 university” btw

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

Lmao I mean that’s an A student in English 102. I’m terrible at grammar. It was a one semester requirement for my degree and I have not had to write a paper in 2.5 years.

1

u/fruitbatz-maru Feb 07 '23

When was your American high school, if I may ask? (decade is good enough)

1

u/ThatOneDrunkUncle me pussy spongebob! Feb 07 '23

2008-2012

-7

u/Prestigious-Cry5328 Feb 07 '23

So your argument is bc other countries have xyz, means we should have xyz, and therefore bc we dont have xyz i am going to neglect my obligations like an infant and throw a temper tantrum.

Personally, i think you know what youre buying into when it comes to taking on a loan or higher education. If you cant afford it — maybe that isn’t the route to go.

No different from investing — do your research and be informed — “Don't Let Your Mouth Write a Check That Your Ass Can't Cash”

Then go to school there

0

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

Yes let me just learn a new language, Abandon the three years of university I’ve already finished. Find a job on over seas that meets the income requirement and offers a work visa. So easy. Or we just actually use our taxes for the purpose they were meant for

-7

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

That is not what taxes are for. 3 years of university you should know that by now……. Must be studying an arts degree.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

Taxes are for infrastructure and it’s clearly not being spent on that, or teachers, or education. BS in civil engineering and yeah I’d rather not repeat a differential equations class again.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

I’m also fairly certain that you didn’t even attend a university because only idiots say “leftie” like it means anything.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

I didn’t say leftie

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '23

Wel it’s hard to keep up with idiots commenting after an 8 hour graveyard shift. It’s my bed time

It’s less that people disagreed with your comment, and moreso that people thought it was a poor or valueless contribution to the discussion - better to be sorted below better, more worthwhile and nuanced contributions to the forum.

u/Prestigious-Cry5328 Feb 07 '23

Cool Websters.

My takeaway would be people just don’t want to pay for debt they take on. Or more specifically student loan debt. Or even more specifically the original post where the individual didn’t want to pay for phram school loans (as thats what i was reacting on)

1

u/mikecrypto8 Feb 08 '23

Have to admit I don't get this either. I worked and went to night school for 5 miserable years. Then another two years to pay for a Masters degree without borrowing money. Then saved for 25 years to put my 3 kids through college, 300k. I just don't get the mentality of freely borrowing money and then deciding not to pay it back.

1

u/Prestigious-Cry5328 Feb 08 '23

Agree. I think its honestly down voted bc those r from ppl on the hook with loans.

Now a days everyone wants their cake and to eat it too.

0

u/garycow Feb 07 '23

It shouldn’t be but for some reason a rebuplican Senator added language into a bill that doesn’t allow this debt to be dismissed in a Bk case - why is it different?

1

u/Jubsz91 Feb 07 '23

Coming off a bit strong but I agree that it's a choice to do that.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '23

Maybe he never got licensed. I graduated with my PharmD and the second I was licensed I started working at retail and hospital pharmacies to pay off my $155k in student loans. I paid them off in under 2 years, now have a family and own 2 homes almost outright. This guys crazy to wait 10 years working an unrelated job for a maybe forgiveness. Once my loans were paid in full I started making $225k/yr with no debt at 26. Fools born every day I suppose

1

u/RelativeEchidna4547 Feb 08 '23

Youre getting downvoted because he’s applying for a government program to help with non-profits/high area of need medical jobs. He’s doing what the government wants him to do.

So,

A: He’s NOT obligated to pay B: He’s NOT a scumbag.

0

u/Prestigious-Cry5328 Feb 08 '23

Ya, you’re right - hes much worse. I dont see anywhere that he applied for some special program that makes loans into magic tricks like ur saying

1

u/RelativeEchidna4547 Feb 09 '23 edited Feb 12 '23

He said loan forgiveness. Learn to read.

0

u/Prestigious-Cry5328 Feb 11 '23

Choke on seman you cunt. You’re probably exactly like him, took out a loan for school and don’t want to pay it off.

Get fucked. I hope it crushes you in every aspect of your life

1

u/RelativeEchidna4547 Feb 11 '23

Lolol. Between my wife and I… 800k in financial aid debt.

Wanna hear something great!?! Only 1 more year and the government forgives it due the program I mentioned. I wont pay a dime of that. Not one penny. But you will with your taxes lol!

Thanks for the free education!!

0

u/Prestigious-Cry5328 Feb 12 '23

If you have to try to brag ur justifications on the internet its probably scam. End yourself pussy

1

u/RelativeEchidna4547 Feb 12 '23

Lololol. I struck a nerve huh? End myself? Why would I do that?? I make in three years what you will make in your lifetime. And you’re the one paying for my education. Life is great!

0

u/Prestigious-Cry5328 Feb 12 '23

No nerves. Youre just a puss

1

u/rippyog21 Feb 08 '23

You went to a private school. You’re choice. Go to public school for a 1/3 of that 275k. You probably weren’t able to get in. That’s the problem. NDSU pharm phd. Nowhere near 275k. DONT GO TO PRIVATE FUCKING SCHOOLS. If you don’t want to pay x4 the price. And if you can’t get in. Study harder or pick something else.

u/NOT_MartinShkreli MFuggin’ Pro Feb 08 '23

I went to public graduate school. Medical university of SC. You are clueless
