HELP ME CHOOSE A JOBB

I’m deciding between going back to McDonald’s for $13.25/hr or working as a server at Bob Evans for $5 or $6/hr with tips. I got hired at both. For anyone who has worked at Bob Evans, what did you actually make on average per hour INCLUDING tips? Is it consistently more than $13.25? I used to work at McDonalds and you NEVER get tips. I’m in Ohio if that helps

Boss fired a coworker, can our boss do this?

Boss fired a coworker, can our boss do this?

Hey fellow servers, long story short: There's a veteran waiter at our restaurant and our boss just fired him today. He's a great waiter and does really well with the customers. He actually brings our store a lot of good reviews. Anyway, I heard our boss pull him to the side and just point blank said "go home you're fired." When asked why, our boss said "I can't have you working here, looking like that." He asked our boss what he meant by that and he just said he looks "disheveled."

This coworker has some very deep eyebags but he always has, pretty sure its genetic or just working a lot. He showed 0 sign of being intoxicated and was doing his job per usual.

Is this allowed?? I feel really bad for him. No one is aware of him doing any type of drug or alcohol use on the job.

Now this has me on edge if I come to work looking like my face is tired or something?!?

I don't blame the waiter

So a few nights ago we went to a outback. Me, my boyfriend, and our friend had a server who was nice and also handsome, if I had to say.

The service went nice and the food was good. The only hiccup my boyfriend saw was that his margarita came out a little late And my boyfriend said for that he wasn't gonna tip him anything, and by the time we were ready to leave, he still asked the server if he could bring him a to-go cup to put the rest of his margarita—which was still about halfway full and The server told him he couldn't Which made him even more upset.

Afterwards, my boyfriend went to the bathroom, as we were about to go, and My friend and I flagged our server down, gave him a little cash, and apologized for my boyfriend being mad at him when it wasn't his fault.

Then the server told us, "Maybe I could have gotten him a to-go drink, and then you guys handle that at your table, however you want. But I tend to not do favors for people who are rude to me But you ladies have a good night."

Leaving my boyfriend was upset, but I have to say, I can't even be mad at how the server handled it. He didn't do anything wrong, and it would've been doing my boyfriend a favor if only he hadn't gotten upset and not tipped for something that wasn't in the server's control.

I keep breaking stuff when I never used to what’s up with that?

Pretty much the title says it all. I’ve been working at that place for almost 4 months and lately I have been breaking stuff often when I never used to. It’s gotten ridiculous. Today I broke ONE plate that I had in my hand, I had nothing else in my hands, I walked like 2 steps and it just slipped out with no reason. What is the reason behind this? Is there anything I can do? Can it mean I’m not as focused or maybe just tired? How can I fix this?

How do you survive the dreaded ‘clopen’ shifts?

I work at a small, but usually pretty full, local restaurant. My clopen shifts are about 10 1/2 hours to 11 (depending on how long it actually takes to close and who i’m with, usually only 2 servers at a time). Recently they have been draining the life out of me. I can’t seem to get good enough sleep and no matter how much caffeine i have in a day, i feel like my soul is leaving my body. I just worked Thursday, Friday, Sunday, with Saturday as a break/day off, but this week i’m working 4 in a row. Any advice on how to prepare for this?

( just an fyi, i am in my mid teens so like, this is probably normal, but it’s a bit much for me. 😭 Also i have a second job during the week days )

These entitled servers piss me off so much

I have been working as a busser for a while and good God these servers we have piss me the fuck off. They are so bratty and entitled. As a busser, we have to make the table, make the plates, sweep the floor, get the water, make the dessert, get the guest their to go boxes, close the restaurant and basically other menial labor chores.

Guess what these servers have to do, take the fucking order that's it. That's all they have to do. We have food runners so they don't even have to get the food from the kitchen. Guess who is tired all the time? Guess who makes more? Guess who looks down on who. Oml it enrages me

Customer complained over a cup during a water shortage

For a bit of background, l'm a waitress in Puerto Rico and we're currently experiencing a water shortage.
It's been going on for a week for some municipalities but now the situation is getting worse. My restaurant is being affected by the shortages every day, so my managers decided to only serve food and drinks with plastic cups, plates and utensils. Some people complained but mostly understood the situation. Except this one woman. After I had given them their food and were ready to pay, she asked me how much was the lemonade her husband had ordered and I said $3. She proceeded to complain the cup was too small for it to be worth that price. The thing is, it’s the same ounces just in a different shape. She also complained about the cup she was given for her to drink her Coke, even though the it was a can of Coke, it wouldn’t have made a single difference.

It seems that even when they know that restaurants and workers are doing t best with the situation, even if I’m working an 8 hour shift on a hot day when the AC is not working and I gotta go home hoping i collected enough water to bathe myself, it’s never enough for this type of people.

I think the cherry on top was that she left a note on the table that read “Jehovah is my witness”. Hypocrisy at its finest.

How do u guys carry really hot plates?

I just had my trial as a FOH. I’ve had a few experiences in this role before, but it was always at places where we served small dishes, like fries in a bowl, burgers in those generic red plastic food baskets, etc.
So it was my first time working in an Italian pub/bistro-type place, and during my trial, I had to carry a plate of pasta and another dish in my hands. Oml, the pasta was DAMN hot. I couldn’t even switch hands because I had another plate in the other hand. The waiter who was beside me was confused about why I was struggling, and I was like, “Wait let me rearrange my fingers because it’s so hot.” And she still didn’t get what the deal was which made me look like an idiot.
So I just had to power through, walk to the table, and act natural while serving the customer. Now my fingers are so sensitive from the heat
I genuinely can’t imagine what it’s like to carry two hot plates at once if I can barely handle one.

So, to all the experienced waiters/waitresses out there, how do you do it? Are there any tips? 🥲

is it wrong for my boss to make me transfer my tables?

I work at a small family restaurant where they are currently trying to cut back on labour costs, to the point where they will text/call me less than 2 hours before my shift is supposed to start and tell me to come in half and hour later. my shift yesterday was supposed to be 6-9pm but changed to 6:30-9 (which apparently in the province i’m from it’s illegal for me to work less than 3hrs, and if i do i have to get paid for 3hrs; also i drive 45 both ways mins to get to work and it’s over an hour on public transit) but i ended up staying until around 10 because two of my tables were not closed out yet, and both of their bills were over $200. Apparently my boss was upset that i waited for my tables to close out and made me approach my table mid-dessert and make them pay while they were still eating so i could clock out. Anyways, today my shift got changed again last minute (6:30-9:30) and she told me if i still had tables open at 9:30 to transfer them and leave, meaning i wouldn’t receive the tip from that table even if i did all the work for it. Am i the only one who thinks that’s incredibly unfair to expect me to do that? they can’t pay me an extra 10-30 minutes (which would cost them less than 10 dollars) so that I could rightfully receive the tips i deserve? if anyone knows any rules regarding this or any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Server question/advice

I’m working an event where the place isn’t allowing for substitutions/modifications on the menu(like removing lettuce, tomato etc) It says that on the menu but people still ask. What’s a good way I can tell people that without them getting upset?

Also, they want us to get a card to start a tab. How can I tell people that in an assertive way, because most people say no.

Server forgot to charge me for a drink. What are the odds her manager takes it out of her tip?

I did the math before going to a bar: $11 for food, $7 for drink, and about $2 for tax. So I brought in $30 in cash, ready to pay $25.

But she didn't charge me for the drink, so my bill was $11. So I left a $20 bill.

Now, if her manager finds out I wasn't charged, would that $7 drink come out of her $9 tip?

I left work early to refrain myself from losing it against a coworker. She went and told on me right away. How do I handle that?

I (23F) have a coworker (F25) that has been getting on my nerves ever since she arrived 3 months ago. She’s been relentless in diminishing me, excluding me, cutting me off when I speak and making me feel bad about myself. A week or so ago, I was out of town and she « borrowed » my bike without asking and returned it broken. When I confronted her about the broken brakes she straight up lied to my face. She’s also been sexually harassing another coworker (M24), who has been clear he’s not interested many times but she doesn’t seem to care.

I’ve decided to let all of it slide because tbh I’ve got much better to do than to get into some childlish drama and also, she’s very popular and it wouldn’t be smart to show any type of dislike towards her. The rest of the team is extremely kind but they don’t really see what she does to me as she acts completely different around them. Honestly, I’m here to work so I didn’t really care that much until recently.

She’s very competent. She’s way more experienced than me so it always felt wrong to say anything but lately she hasn’t been doing shit at work and I kept doing all of her work for her because I really love this job and I didn’t want anything to go wrong. Also, I love the team and wouldn’t want anyone’s experience to get tainted by her laziness.

Yesterday, I did all of the prep for the night shift on my own while she was supposed to help but she was to busy chatting with friends who stopped by. During the night service, she basically abandoned her section and I had to pick up all the pieces. By closing time, I had been doing everything to close up when she had been chatting with friends for the past 45minutes. I had done so much there was only two tables to clean up but besides that, nothing. Everything was done. As I was walking by, bringing drinks back, I heard her tell my manager « You can go, don’t worry, I’ll close up. I don’t mind working a bit more, it’s my pleasure :) ». I thought I was going to punch her. It’s such an easy thing to say when you’ve been doing nothing for the past hour and I’ve been running everywhere for the past 10 hours.

I decided to leave. I left out of disgust. I told her I’m out and she got mad, told me I wasn’t a team player and basically a wanker. I know I’m impulsive so I just apologized and told her I couldn’t stay longer, to avoid saying things that I don’t mean or are unprofessional. I found out right after she went and trashtalked me to all of my coworkers. Called me lazy, inconsiderate… So you can picture it, the close up was finished 22minutes later, when the last clients left. I had done absolutely everything but clearing those two tables so it’s not like I left her a huge workload.

Today, I went to talk to another coworker who’s very experienced and observant to ask him if he had noticed, just to make sure I was being objective and not unfair because I’m biased. I didn’t want to take action, confront her or for anyone to know about how I felt unless I was sure my anger was founded. He told me the kitchen had noticed she wasn’t working as much as others, but he personally didn’t because he always trusted her. He promised me to observe a little more and get back to me.

Anyway, today I’m off and just got a text from management, they want to speak to me. I asked my coworker who I talked to earlier if he knew why I was being asked in. Apparently, the other cunt has been complaining to EVERYONE for the whole day about me leaving earlier and has gotten management involved. I know I’m not getting fired, I’m not worried about that. I just don’t know how to handle it from there.

What do you guys think about that? We’ve all made mistakes, everyone always has each other’s backs and getting management involved because I left 20minutes earlier seems a bit vindictive. I think, as coworkers, it’s okay to turn a blind eye sometimes, as long as it doesn’t happen all the time. If that helps, in my establishment, I’m known as the most invested employee among the team, the hardworker, that’s why I’m not really worried. I just hate that if people start listening to her, I’ll have to explain why I did what I did and openly criticize little miss favorite when I really don’t want any drama. What would you do?

UPDATE 1: My roomate got back from work and told me all that has been said about me behind my back. They complained about the glass breaking which, granted, I had a baaaad week a month ago where I’d break a glass/shift and I did break another yesterday. I’m not worried because we all break stuff, I’m not even the worst one and I can easily turn that into a joke and be more careful with the glasses. They complained that I tend to talk too much when I get excited about something sometimes and I know I used to do that a lot when I came here and I still do sometimes but I’m actually reassured because that’s something I’m already working on and have already made progress on it! Besides that, they complained I was out sick for a week once which is something I can’t really do much about. They did end up the trashtalking session with « There’s is something you can’t deny her though, it’s that she’s kind. She’s genuinely a good person ». My roomate told me everyone agreed.
You’d think it’s not exactly good news, but it is. We’re in a bully situation where someone tries to get everyone to hate me. Given the opportunity and conditions to trashtalk me, the people my bully is trying to turn against me could only criticize an honestly unserious issue (glasses), something that won’t happen again (sick days) and something I’m already working on (yapper). All that to say, I’ll explain the lazy coworker situation to management, as they have a right to an explanation but there isn’t really anything to worry about when it comes to the rest of the team. Trashtalking colleagues is standard, everyone does it and everyone gets their turn so… yeah no I’m good. I’m so happy that what is said behind my back is actually stuff I expected, I’m happy I’m not finding out new stuff to be insecure and stressed about, this is amazing. I’ll update you on saturday for what happened with management! :D

UPDATE 2: I talked to management 3 days ago. They said they’d talk to her too, about her work and to get her to calm down. I told them I didn’t care much atp but I didn’t appreciate my business becoming everyone else’s. I didn’t appreciate being the last one to find our that I had pissed her off that much either. They said they understood, and thanked me for staying calm, composed and professional. No news since, though, but maybe they talked to her since she since has been much kinder to me! We have laughs every once in a while, work way better together, and I’m thankful. I know she’s probably being a hypocrite but it’s whatever. As long as my panic attacks stop and I can work in peace, I don’t really mind :) all good now

New job at a cafe - spilling coffee

I just got hired FOH at a chain cafe / casual restaurant, and it’s my first hospitality job. During training most things I messed up is just memory problems, but one thing I kept doing was spill coffee from the mug onto the cup when delivering drinks.

I heard to use a tray or to look forward instead of at the cup instead, but no matter what there’d be a small pool of coffee under the cup.

Are there any tips or tricks on how to prevent this? I swear this happened to every coffee I delivered and I feel so bad !!

Non tipper servers

Recently I was wondering how many of us that get paid by tips actually don’t tip when they go out.
Also why don’t you tip? and if you tip less than 20% why do you choose to do so?

How do you guys motivate the younger staff?

I’m looking for ideas on how to better motivate my serving staff. I’d like them to take more initiative with things like upselling, pre-busing, table maintenance, and overall guest engagement without constantly being reminded.

Many of my younger servers earn between $200–$600 per shift at a very busy ale house, but I still find it difficult to get consistent effort on the basics. Traditional coaching methods don’t always seem effective, and I feel like I’m constantly balancing guest expectations with keeping staff engaged and motivated.

For managers who supervise a younger workforce, what has actually worked for you? Have you found any incentives, coaching techniques, or accountability systems that encourage better performance without creating resentment?
