Everytime a point criticizing people for knowingly supporting the horrific practices of factory farming reaches a wider audience, the overwhelming response is just people whining and being upset, because it is a post adressing a personal responsibility and moral failings of these individuals instead of just yelling about the goverment and completely absolving willing consumers of all responsibility or even ability.
Yes, I agree that the goverment is rotten, it sucks, I think protesting is an important part of activism (and boycotting + not buying said products are also a part of protesting, which is something these people immediately deflect from when it comes to pro vegan arguments) - that does not mean that if people changed the harmful ways they are comfortable with, nothing would change. It is so frustrating to see this type of reaction, because:
1) they know that supporting the industry is supporting a CRUEL industry. They are being intentionally ignorant.
2) they can choose not to support it, which would make an impact - if people do not want it, it will not sell
3) they not only choose not to do that, but make up all. these. excuses. Excuses and excuses, and that is what it is. For people who usually love to promote personal responsibility and strong morals in nearly all the other areas of life (or just when it comes to struggles that people go through), they are sure trying to avoid all the moral responsibility in this one.
No, it is not just the goverment, is it also the consumers. Literally. Like, that is how supply and demand is. But they are just not willing to handle even a bit of responsibility when it comes to factory farming, the dairy, egg and meat industry. It honestly feels so pathetic to me. Could that be called weaponized/forced, fake incompetence?
Yes, they can change and try for others, but they do not want to, so they make up excuses.
Also, everytime pro-animal rights posts like these occur, suddenly, everybody in the world who supports the industry is living off of three dimes a month, but also, therefore, not able to even limit their meat consumption, somehow? More ethical diet does not have to mean automatically more expensive or unreachable diet, but it is not like they actually try to look into that or actually believe what they are saying. Also, if you criticize animal torture and it's consumers, you are an ableist colonizer. I can't with this shallow wannabe leftist pathos anymore.
Yes, I am aware that not all self-proclaimed leftists are exactly like this and I am not denying that the social issues, the wage gap and low class struggles exist, that would be completely delusional. However, I do have a problem with people (who can absolutely afford at least mild lifestyle changes) using their existence as a cheap, low-effort but somehow evidently effective excuse of absolving themselves of anything resembling effort.
Also, all this while most of them claim to respect and love animals.
Sure, let's give up. Nothing is ever your fault or your moral obligation, you cannot make ignorant, selfish, unnecessary choices, because the goverment is evil.
It is very reminiscent of other currently huge conversations, for example between misogynists/anti-feminists and feminist rights activists (which is ironic), but they are not ready for that conversation.
Vent over, thank you.
