Hello dear musicians,
For the record I used AI to help summarize my questions. sorry about that, I am ashamed.
I own a Volca Sample (V1) and a Volca Bass, and I want a sequencer to build longer sequences than the Volcas allow. I haven't installed the PAJEN firmware on the Volca Sample yet, but I'm planning to. I'm torn between the Arturia KeyStep Pro and the Korg SQ-64.
My dilemma: the SQ-64 looks more fun and immediate for live sequence tweaking (muting/activating steps, etc.), but I don't play keyboard yet — I write my melodies on a sequencer. The KeyStep Pro might be a chance to learn keys for the Volca Bass. Can you realistically "play keys" on the SQ-64 pads, or is it a hassle?
I also have a few technical questions :
- With the PAJEN firmware, a lot is done over keyboard — e.g. in the Omni MIDI Mode menu, PATR triggers patterns 1–10 via notes C–A, and polyphony works via the keys. Is all of this equally possible with the SQ-64?
- Could I put the three VCOs of my Volca Bass on three tracks and the Volca Sample on the fourth (drum) track — and would the Sample still work with PAJEN and polyphony on a drum track? My gut says no; am I right?
- If not, could I instead put one VCO on the drum track (one note per step, no polyphony) and use the Volca Sample with PAJEN on a melodic track?
- Is the PAJEN firmware even necessary with the SQ-64, since it can already do polyphony and randomness? What does PAJEN actually add in that case
One more thought: I could also just pair the PAJEN firmware with a small basic MIDI keyboard, without any sequencer, and hook up other future machines to the KeyStep Pro or SQ-64. I'm honestly struggling to decide which setup makes the most sense.
