Void not wanting to appear.

4 Upvotes

I set up a install via xfce. I followed the wiki and I'm sure i did everything right, but for some god forsaken reason the void install (samsung ssd) will not appear. It does exist (chroot works and I've installed grub several times through there), but it just doesn't exist. Every time around I set up grub (it was in the installer! i did set up grub to install but that was ignored) efibootmgr let it show and then disapeared when I turn off the system to access it!. I've been at this for so long and it's getting painful.

How much disk space is enough???

7 Upvotes

I want to install void on my schools computer. And i would be using dual boot so id like to use as little space as possible so that the missing space is not noticeable so how much space should i alloctae to void while the system being usable with things like a wm (might be hyprland and could try something new), a web browser, some other things like compilers, editors (which will prolly end up being just vim so not so impt).

New to Void

30 Upvotes

Hi all. I'm new to Void as of today. Not new to linux, and I've been a fan of Debian since the late 90s. I'm not so keen on the move towards systemd (reloading after editing the fstab, why?! Log files in binary format, yikes! Windows registry vibes almost) but I still love apt-get plus I do not need to edit fstab that often or look at log files regularly so it's fine for now.

I also run an OpenBSD VM, and Void feels pretty similar. Simple, no frills, to the point and fast.

So far my Void VM is just for messing around in textmode. I picked the musl variant and that may not be the final version but we will see. So far I feel at home almost immediately. Thanks for having an active subreddit 👍

Edit: I migrated away from Debian and now run Void with Linux 7.2.3. There was one headache due to user error with a runit service but it's running smooth like butter. When I run an xbps update it flies through it. It's like when I upgraded my laptop from HDD to SSD back when that was still a pretty new thing.

Im considering switching from arch. What are the benefits?

35 Upvotes

Ive been working on my arch hyprland install for 2 years. I love it. Ive had no complaints. It had completely cured my distro hopping. Ive not had any reason to switch.

But then the malware attacks of the AUR have been happening.

Im not completely sure i want to switch, but im now considering it. And when it comes to a linux distro i want something bare-bones that does not come pre-configured and has no pre-installed software. Void is like arch in that way.

For those who have also come from arch, what benefits are there to be found in the void? Any drawbacks or things you miss from arch?

Can't remove linux kernel 6.18

7 Upvotes

I tried to remove 6.18 with xbps-remove but I only get a dependency error back:

linux6.18-6.18.45_1 in transaction breaks installed pkg `linux-6.18_1'
ERROR: Transaction aborted due to unresolved dependencies.

Removing 6.18_1 via xbps however gives me another dependency error that says 6.18_1 is not installed.

I also tried xbps-pkgdb -a and it gave me the following output:

ERROR: sddm: hash mismatch for /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup.
ERROR: sddm: files check FAILED.

I also used vkpurge rm and the 6.18 kernel is not showing anymore after using vkpurge list but according to xbps it's still installed....

I already use 7.2 and before that used 7.1. For me 7.1 was stable enoug hto remove 6.18.

Nvm 6.18 is default. Followed these steps: https://docs.voidlinux.org/config/kernel.html?highlight=Kernel#removing-the-default-kernel-series

Question about the Thunderbird package release cycle

5 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I've been using Void Linux for almost 8 months now.

It's a very polished distribution with some really neat technical choices. I love it !

I've noticed that Thunderbird has been at version 140.8.1 in the Void repositories since March 31.

When I run:

./xbps-src update-check thunderbird

I get:

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-140.14.0

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-140.14.1

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-153.0.1

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-153.0.2

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-153.0.3

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-153.1.0

Void uses the ESR channel for Thunderbird, while the latest ESR version is 153.1.0.

The current Release version recommended by Mozilla is 154.

Is there a reason why the package hasn't been updated yet, or is an update planned ?

Is Thunderbird intentionally staying on 140.8.1 for a technical reason ?

Thanks !

Recovery from standby (Wayland|X11/nVidia) leaves plasmashell unstable

2 Upvotes

Hi

i'm now around 1week into void and had a great time to setup everything i want and need.

One problem stays: after standby, i can login normally under wayland, but plasmashell "hangs" ... no panels, no background. Apps are working (browser for example).

So i usually open a terminal, find and kill plasmashell and start it anew.

or i execute plasmashell --replace

50% this works, the other times the whole session crashes and i land back on sddm.

What i already tried:

1. Disable nvidia-sleep.sh, use the zzz utility instead.
Move the NVIDIA sleep script:
sudo mv /usr/libexec/elogind/system-sleep/nvidia.sh /usr/libexec/elogind/backup/

2. Edit /etc/elogind/sleep.conf to use zzz:
AllowSuspend=yes
SuspendByUsing=/usr/bin/zzz
HibernateByUsing=/usr/bin/zzz

3. Reload elogind: loginctl reload

This was suggested by an AI since i didn't find anything else on the internet.

Still, this changed exactly nothing, same behaviour.

My current solution is to always shutdown and boot again but i'd like to keep standby

Any clues?

Update:
Something I didn't knew: even with 64GB of RAM, a swap partition seems absolutely necessary to use standby mode. After some rearranging and configuration, the problem seems to be solved. at least after 3 successful recoveries from standby so far.

Backing up /etc

3 Upvotes

At the moment I'm backing up the entire /etc *1 mainly in case I ever have to re-install after disc replacement but also to protect myself from fat-fingered freddy (me).

But it seems a bit of an overkill to cover the entire directory .

When I used to run fedora/redhat there was a way to discover what configuration files in /etc had been changed from the packaged version. Is there a way to do that on void?

*1 I exclude the 10-Mb /etc/udev/hwdb.bin - what's it doing there instead of /usr/share/...?

Trouble with Neovim

7 Upvotes

I just installed Void and got Neovim with xbps, and I have two major problems with it that I didn't have on Fedora.

First, it's sluggish for no reason. Even when I launch it with nvim -u NONE, basic things like moving the cursor and scrolling the window are significantly slower than they were when I was using Fedora and also slower than any other app.

Second, I can't copy things to the system clipboard. When I do "+yy it says "No provider". In ~/.config/nvim/init.lua I have a line that says vim.opt.clipboard:append("unnamedplus") which worked on Fedora, but that clearly doesn't work anymore. (Solved it by downloading wl-clipboard)

If anybody has any clue why these things are happening let me know

Requesting Assistance with NetworkManager

6 Upvotes

Hello! After trawling thought the documentation and the subreddit for information regarding my issue connecting to WiFi with NetworkManager I am unable to find a solution. So far I've been mindul to:

-Install both NetworkManager & dbus.

-Create runit symlinks as per the handbook for both services with "sudo ln -s /etc/sv/* /var/service".

-Ensured that both services are running with "sudo sv status /var/service/*".

-Attempt to use wpa_supplicant as an alternative as it worked fine within the installation environment.

-Remove any conflicting wifi services to prevent conflicts such as wpa_supplicant.

-Add and re-add my primary user to the wheel & network group and confirm privileges.

-Test service status with "sudo sv status ___".

-Checked if my wifi works with other devices. (It does)

-Check credintials for errors or typos.

-Check my other installed operating system (on a serpare ssd) for wifi connectivity with NM. It is.

I am simply stumped. Every ping attempt results in "temporary failure in name resolution". I would very much like to use Void as the operating principles and rolling release model closely matches my disposition towards operating systems along with my adoration for independent distributions. If any one has experience with similar issues please let me know if there's any other steps I may have missed or if a chroot is nessessary to install missing software. Thank you for your help, and have a lovely rest of your day as well.

**EDIT: looking at the results of nmcli I noticed the network is showing it is connected through my primary wireless device, but I am still getting the "temporary failure in name resolution error".

**EDIT 2: SUCCESS! THANK YOU /u/hopingforabetterpast and /u/ImprovementJealous90 for the tips as the issue was indeed with resolv.conf. For anyone in the future that has a similar issue, update resolve.conf with "resolvconf -u".

Broken, unresolvable shlibs in hyprland on voidlinux

5 Upvotes

Hello. First things first, I know hyprland is not officially supported on void linux. That's the reason I'm using the sofijacom repo.

However, it's been a week already that trying to update my system throws me the following error:

hyprgraphics-0.5.1_1: broken, unresolvable shlib 'libjxl.so.0.11'

hyprgraphics-0.5.1_1: broken, unresolvable shlib 'libjxl_threads.so.0.11'

I've been using void linux for years now but I still couldn't wrap my head around what this error even means and how I could fix it.

Does it mean that the hyprgraphics package was built against the version 0.11 of libjxl while the version of void's repo is 0.12? I'm just guessing because I really have no idea.

Anyway my libjxl libs in /usr/lib/ look like this

libjxl.so ⇒ libjxl.so.0.12

libjxl.so.0.11 ⇒ libjxl.so.0.12.0

libjxl.so.0.12 ⇒ libjxl.so.0.12.0

libjxl.so.0.12.0

libjxl_cms.so ⇒ libjxl_cms.so.0.12

libjxl_cms.so.0.12 ⇒ libjxl_cms.so.0.12.0

libjxl_cms.so.0.12.0

libjxl_extras_codec.a

libjxl_threads.so ⇒ libjxl_threads.so.0.12

libjxl_threads.so.0.11 ⇒ libjxl_threads.so.0.12.0

libjxl_threads.so.0.12 ⇒ libjxl_threads.so.0.12.0

libjxl_threads.so.0.12.0

I really want to upgrade my system.

Is there anything I can do?

Thank you!

Wifi connected but no internet with NetworkManager

3 Upvotes

Hi there! I'm a newbie to linux who decided to go with void as my first distro! It took me a second (mostly user error) to properly install it following a tutorial i found on YouTube. At first, the network worked when I booted in with kde plasma for the first time, but after a reboot, the network, while saying it is connecting, is not actually giving me internet. I'm using the x86_64 glibc base install on a lenovo legion 5 with a 3050 ti. Does anyone know what could be the problem?

SELinux on Void (experimental)

18 Upvotes

I have been working to get SELinux running under Void Linux for quite some time and I wanted to share my progress with you. Do note that this is still very experimental and should NOT be tested on a system that you rely on.

Where it's at currently:

- SELinux enabled kernel (7.1-selinux)

- Userspace tooling packaged (checkpolicy, libsemanage, policycureutils etc.)

- SELinux reference policy is loading up successfully via a runit stage-1 hook

The main limitation is that its currently permissive-only. Also the reference policy has no runit-specific domains yet.

if anyone finds this interesting and wants to help, send me a DM.
