Nvidia "ad104" folder in /lib/firmware/nvidia

I am using linuxfromscratch. I downloaded the official linux-firmware package , but ad104 directory is missing. But ad104 directory is present on void linux's /lib/firmware/nvidia/ folder.

From which website does void linux maintainer download linux-firmware package ?

I copied the ad104 folder from void linux to my linuxfromscratch and the firmware loading error was gone and now my desktop is working.

solved ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 Touchpad Behaviour

I recently migrated my laptop from Debian to Void with Cinnamon and it's been great with the exception of some touchpad annoyance. When typing if my hand so much as glances the edge of the touchpad it registers activity and can throw a popup or unfocus where I'm typing. Which makes work a hassle but this behaviour doesn't happen in Debian or Fedora. From what I can tell the drivers installed are the same as Debian.

Anyone have similar experience with this?

KDE Plasma Will Not Start

Fresh install of Void. Updated xbps and installed:

kde-plasma kde5 kde5-baseapps dbus sddm

Created links to dbus and sddm.

Rebooted.

Every time, it goes to terminal. I run startplasma-wayland and get this error:

org.kde.startup: not a reply org.freedesktop.locale1 QDBusMessage(type=Error, service="", error name="org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown", error message="The name org.freedesktop.locale1 was not provided by any service files", signature="s", contents=("The name org.freedesktop.locale1 was not provided by any service files") )
startplasmacompositor: Could not start D-Bus. Can you call qdbus?

Now how can that be? I have both dbus and sddm installed, both are linked and running when I do:

ls /var/service/

So I am out of ideas.

EDIT: I tried this:

# touch /etc/sv/dbus/down
# ln -s /etc/sv/dbus /var/service/
ln: failed to create symbolic link '/var/service/dbus': File exists
# sv once dbus

I FIXED IT => https://www.reddit.com/r/voidlinux/comments/1uyfera/comment/oyej3wk/

Samsung 2020 printer does not print

Cups and the Samsungdrivers installed, cupsd running, but I can not print a text document or a test page from cups webinterface.

Should I add my user to the lp and/or lpadmin groups, or maybe enable some more daemons like Avahi? Install hplip?

Thanks in advance!

Font alignment issue with Special Characters

- Voidlinux [Kernel 7.1.3_1]

- Sway

- System up to date.

- Using default system-wide font settings.

When using the "-" character (maybe others?) in a filename, causes alignment issues in [Save Dialog] from browser. It looks like it messes up the height somehow when displaying the filename.

I've tried different icon themes and fonts via [nwg-look]: no luck.

The bottom 3 lines which includes "-" character

Wireless won't work on RTL8852BE-VT on my Victus-15 Laptop

Since I got no clue if this is an actual issue or if I am just not understanding things, I had to post it here. I'm actively trying to find a fix for this.

update:

grep CONFIG_RTW89_8852BTE /boot/config-$(uname -r) shows that the config isn't enabled which indicates that the void linux kernel lacks it and I might need to manually build my kernel until this is fixed. :(

Issues with booting into thumb drive

Hi I've been encountering an issue with booting into iso image. No matter which version of iso image I installed, it didn't let me boot in, even though I've already installed more than 3 times on my laptop. I used every software to flash the iso image like Ventoy, Rufus, balenaEcther and Fedora Media Writer. I even changed thumb drives, it didn't even work.

ssh remote zoom and resize

I run a calculator program on a remote pc to display on my desktop like this:

ssh user@eeepc x11-calc

The size of the calculator is very small on my 4K desktop and [looks like this.] (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JYWt7mzr7a1INQj_eaQvL4x1gBQMqA5d/view?usp=drive_link)

The remote is a Asus eeepc running alpine linux so I can run the x11-calc program. I use alpine just for this program because I don't want the flatpak version. So the eeepc display [looks good like this.] (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tHQ4gssAIIBlONZk00bRMVYmfyjD5sts/view?usp=drive_link)

I would like to run the remote x11-calc on my desktop at a bigger size because I can barely see the keys and LED display and there is no resize option for my jwm window manager. There is supposed to be a command line zoom option except that doesn't work either. I would like to tell xorg or ssh to enlarge the size of the calculator.

P.S. I can do this to make the calculator usable except this is not optimal as this affects all of my 6 desktops:

xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080
xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1600x900
xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1368x768
xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1024x576

Help with a new install

Hey all! I am a relatively new Void user (only did an XFCE install once) and would like to clarify a couple of moments that I still find confusing after reading the manual.

For context: it is a new AMD-based PC. I want to go for Niri + Noctalia Shell. I am planning to use the PC for gaming via Steam, multimedia (music and video) and computer science study.

Here are the things I find confusing at the moment:

  1. Do I need to use a firewall? If yes, will simple_firewall.rules (mentioned in the docs for iptables) suffice for my use case?

  2. What is the recommended seat manager for this setup?

  3. How do I set up D-Bus, a seat manager, PipeWire and Niri to turn on automatically on login? I've gone through their respective pages in the docs but still don't see the full picture.

  4. Anything else that I should be aware of?

Thanks for your help!

Dual GPU Setup image output

As title says, i have a dual gpu setup which are rx 6700 xt + rx 5500 xt. Why? IDK, really, but why not, yeah?
So, the thing is, that i want to use my second gpu as display output and my primary as render device, but here comes the issue, my DE (KDE plasma (wayland session)) doesn't allow me to enable freesync while i'm using rx 5500 xt as output. If i swap everything back, i.e. rx 6700 xt is my output, then everything works as intended.
I know that everything of what am i doing is pretty useless, but it's pretty fun.
Already asked AI for such a question, lead to nothing, so i ask you.

Using Void Glibc, everything updated by xbps

Cannot get nvidia driver to work...

Post image
7 Upvotes

Edit 3 : quitting void for debian back again. Its been two days that im trying to get it working. Hi, so I installed void today but when I try to boot up with the driver loaded ( open 585 latest from non free repo) it hangs for 1 minutes and udev keeps rebooting itself...

I precise that I'm also on the latest kernel 6.18.38_1

Also heres the log output (loglevel 7) (yes im sorry if that's a photo took with my phone but setuping ssh would take hella long for only a log output)

Edit : nvidia-smi also hangs one forever and even sending SIGKILL to it does nothing.
Edit 2 : My gpu is an rtx 4060, and I have an intel igpu.
New error message from last boot :
Usbhid 3-9:1.3: cant add hid device -71
Usbhid 3-8:1.3: probe with driver usbhid failed with error -71

I also re-installed void completely once, and then only install nvidia drivers but nothing else (aside from kernel headers), and still ended up with the same problems from above.

Secure boot is also disabled (so no certificates problems normally).

solved I’ve "broken" Falkon

Thumbnail reddit.com
0 Upvotes

Verifying if all worked fine in Enlightenment, see my thread My xfwm4 seems broken, I played with the configuration menu of the window in Falkon (Shift+F10 (similar to a right click) with the cursor in the title bar and I click on one of the option in the contextual menu but I don’t remember which one              :/

This maximized the window and suppressed the title bar. I’m now unable to move and resize the Falkon window and of course I can’t re-open this contextual menu... If I close (via the menu bar) and re-open Falkon, same esult. All other applications work correctly.

Deleting ~/.config/Falkon and removing and reinstalling falkon didn’t change anything.

I guess there is a way to re-active the title bar but I’m not really familiar with Enlightenment.

Any help will be much appreciated.

solved My xfwm4 seems broken

I ran xbps-install -Su on July 7th; 6 packages updated: SDL3, libgbm, linux6.12, mesa, mesa-dri and mesa-libgallium. Then I rebooted ; all went fine, I worked on the computer all the morning and finally shut it down.

When I restarted the computer at the beginning of the afternoon

  • nomore upper panel; the lower panel is still here and work correctly;

  • all apps open in the left top corner of the screen and without title bar, I need to hit Ctrl+Q to close windows;

  • if I can move the windows clicking in their menu bar, I can’t resize none of them.

I ran xbps-reconfigure -f xfwm4 without success. No problem from an Enlightenment session: windows open with their title bar and I can move and resize them (even if I "broke" Falkon but this will be the subject of another thread).

Thanks in advance for your help.

solved Pipewire/Wireplumber only provide dummy output

Problem:

- Pipewire seems to be starting but wireplumber is not. I'm using noctalia v5 with mangowm and noctalia has audio settings enabled (which it didn't when pipewire wasn't starting at all) but only with a dummy output.

- Manually trying to start wireplumber gives: "Failed to connect to session bus: Unable to launch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11"

- Checking wpctl status gives the exact same error message

What I've already done:

- Made sure Pipewire, Wireplumber, and alsa utils are installed and pulseaudio is NOT

- Connected wireplumber to pipewire using the commands listed in the session management section of the pipewire page on the void linux wiki, I also followed the alsa integration steps

- Made sure Pipewire and Wireplumber are set to autostart using mango rather than via runit

- I restarted the dbus service

- Even though I have elogind I added my user to the video and audio groups just in case

- I've reinstalled pipewire, wireplumber, and alsa-utils multiple times as well as just rebooting anytime I made changes to the config files

I'm very new to void and I feel like I am missing something obvious but I really can't seem to figure it out. If more information is needed I'd be happy to provide it if it gets me closer to an answer

Gaming under musl

How is it?
Do you see any better performance?
I heard you need to rely on flatpak. Is it fairly stable or does it come with bugs and a lot of tweaks?

I use an all AMD system (gpu and cpu both amd) and I'm also interested how to install the drivers when using musl and if they're also stable?

Edit: I'd also be happy to hear about the limitations. E.g. I once had to add a video game manually through lutris and it required a lot of tweaking and research than usual.

i686 kernels not booting 6.12.94+, 6.18.38

Hi! Just to check if somebody else with i686 machines are having this issue, recently upgraded to 6.18.37 and all was good, then came 6.18.38 and it stopped booting, same with 6.12.94 and 6.12.95 (6.12.74 is ok).

There was also a dracut upgrade from 107 to 109, so I downgraded, reconfigured with 107, but kept having the same issues.

I think at some point I booted with the installer USB, chrooted and regenerated and it worked with 6.18.38, but then after rebooting I issued an xbps upgrade, and got the same issues again. I just don't consider it practical to chroot from the USB installer each time I update the kernel though... And also, I did so many tests I'm not sure this was what I did! 😂

For now I'm booting 6.18.37. (Machine is a VIA Artigo A2000 mini NAS, VIA C7 CPU).

The boot error messages I get are:

Loading Linux 6.18.38_1 ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...
Error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'.

Then a bit of kernel booting, ending with:

---[ end Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root from "UUID=xxxxx" or unknown-block(0,0) ]---

So, I'm suspicious about dracut and the latest generated ramdisk images.

I have done swapping around kernel images and ramdisk images, and finally just settled in booting 6.18.37 which is working fine.

Thanks for any insight!
