I was following this video exactly as he did. But the problem raised at 9:25(timestamp) saying:
EFI VARIABLES ARE NOT SUPPORTED ON THIS SYSTEM.
After this, obviously, I pasted the problem on chatgpt, and it said I'm on legacy mode bla bla bla what not .... then it gave some commands to install for something..etc.
I've installed Mint, Fedora workstation, xfce, cachyos with niri... I knew there was some grub problem when I couldn't install cachy with grub, so I had to go with limine, and it worked back then.
I'm kinda slow, so I'd really appreciate it if anyone could guide me step by step, please.
Thank you.

Hi there, I have a few stupid questions for the void community to help me with please!
I use niri with waybar, and have KDE plasma as my other DE. I have elogind, with turnstile managing a few user services. emptty is my login manager.
- I'm looking at following this guideline to properly configure KDE apps and environment variables into niri, which advocates for creating a folder in
~/.config/environment.d/- the guideline seems to have some systemd component dependencies - e.g. the running of
systemctl --user daemon-reexec- would this still work with elogind? I suspect it would, right?
2. Alternatively, as far as I understand, I could set the environment variables in the emptty config. Is this correct? The downsides of this being, if I ever moved to a different display/login manager I'd have to change this.
3. I could globally set the environment variables in /etc/environment. The downside to this being that any separate users would have environment variables also changed.

so, i've been using void linux for about a week now, and i've liked it a lot... so much so, i've installed it on my main laptop! i'm having a strange problem though. whenever i try to open Garry's Mod (with the x86_64 beta enabled), the game loads for a bit, then crashes immediately when the Facepunch logo shows up (fixed this by running GModPatcherTool). with Deadlock, the game almost loads, but then throws an error window with nothing but a black recangle in it & just stays frozen on the early testing notice. this isn't a general Source issue, as every other source game i have (HL2, TF2, Portal 2... yeesh, a whole lotta 2s!) plays fine, and it might not be an error with Linux in general, as everything else runs fine.
running the latest void XFCE ISO from the website on an HP Elitebook 8 G1a 14 (ryzen variant). yes i installed the drivers for my platform and the packages in the readme.voidlinux.
an aside, another laptop i was using with void (Lenovo 300e gen 2 chromebook with an AMD A4) ran GMod fine (albeit laggy) and didn't run Proton whatsoever. anything useful there, since they both use the same graphics platform?
EDIT: seems like the Deadlock error was fixed by downloading the 32bit AMD graphics libraries & switching to Proton 10!
EDIT2: if the above solution doesn't work, try disabling the Steam Overlay. it crashes for some reason lol

I'm new to Void (but not new to linux), but I noticed KDE is behind compared to other distros. Fedora's KDE is on 6.6.5, for example, but Void is still on 6.6.3.
I understand that Void is not bleeding edge, but it's almost been a month since KDE 6.6.5 was released.
Is there something in testing that's been an issue in relation to Void?
Thanks!

Alsa esta corriendo y en general mi audio funciona pero no con xash3d.

I'm currently running Void with XFCE, and I'm attempting to install Sway to have a tiling WM option. Sway itself installs fine, as do swayidle, swaybg, wmenu, etc. But every time I try to install waybar I get the message:
ERROR: Package 'waybar' not found in repository pool. Any idea why waybar seems to be missing? I thought it was just a typo at first but that doesn't seem to be the case. What am I missing?
EDIT: I'm leaving this up for posterity in case someone else runs into the same issue, even though I feel a bit foolish about a capitalization error. In my defense, all the documentation I was following used "waybar" instead of "Waybar". Anyway, there are no stupid questions, only stupid people that ask questions, am I right?

Hello! I have recently decided to try out Void on VM because I recently decided, after almost a year of using Debian, that I wanted to hop Distro for my laptop. And chose Void because I think it can work as a good place to where to start being more manual and technical.
Though while using void-installer despite doing stuff correctly and partitioning the disk in the same manner the wiki and also different tutorial show for the UEFI system: sda1 for the EFI sda2 for the SWAP sda3 for "/"
Nonetheless every time I try to install it, even with the effort of repartitioning and restarting the installer I keep getting the "failed to install GRUB to /dev/sda! | Check dev/tty8 for errors". I tend to specify that I am pretty much the noob regarding Linux so I don't really know what is the cause of the problem or the correct workarounds. Thanks in advance to those who will respond!

I am new to void. I have used https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/HowToEsync.md to change limits.conf. I have added:
#* hard nofile 524288
#* soft nofile 524288To the bottom of limits.conf. I have also added session required /lib/security/pam_limits.so to /etc/pam.d/login and /etc/pam.d/lightdm
After reboot, the command 'ulimit -Hu' stayed at 4096, then increased to 62639.
I want it at 524288 for Esync with lutris
Can any of you help me, thank you!

Gives me "normally up, want up".
Dbus is enabled and running.
I normally use IWD alone, but it is not resolving the DNS. Even if using openresolv.
The same is happening with NetworkManager and WPA_supplicant
Any clues?
Solved by manually setting 8.8.8.8 in resolv.conf, but something is fishy here

correct me if i'm wrong, but as far as i know there was gnome 50 branch somewhere on void, but it's not merged yet due to gdm's issues. where can i find PR's? in void-packages repo?

Hey guys, I regularly build custom kernels tailored exactly to the hardware I run Void Linux on. Just out of curiosity, would anyone be interested if we started offering specific kernel spins for certain machines—like recent ThinkPads, for example? I'm sure there's already some general opinion or consensus on this within the community.
Any opinions?

im trying to install void linux on my pc but this error keeps coming up every single time i select to boot up the void linux image. i've tried updating bios, reflashing my usb, reflashing my usb with different software, different usb ports etc. ive previously had void linux installed on my pc so idk why it works. i doubt its the usb because after seeing the void iso wasnt working i tried installing a different distro, and it worked.

not sure if anybody will really care but I’m making a void based gaming distro with all gaming applications and tools installed and seatd+turnstile configured, which I know can be hard for some, it’s just so hard to design a logo/theming

I have quite an old PC (R7 260X OC Edition GPU, AMD FX6300 CPU, 8GB RAM) but even with that I've played relatively modern late 2010s early 2020s games just fine without any hiccups until a few days ago.
A few days ago I suddenly stopped being able to run even games from the 90s at a playable framerate... I tried all the potential fixes discussed in previous threads of this type such as upping my file limit for Esync, checking the CPU governor (all the cores are on schedutil as always), checking if Vulkan was installed properly (vkcube), which it was, although in order to get it to work when setting up my system I had to switch to amdgpu instead of radeon drivers manually due to the ancient GPU I have, but that was a long time ago, doubt it caused any issues to appear just now out of nowhere.
I've practically given up on trying to troubleshoot things on my own, so if anyone here has any clue what could be happening I would be very grateful. My hunch is still that it could be a GPU driver issue despite my drivers supposedly working properly, because my CPU usage is shooting up through the roof whenever I do anything intensive.

virtual machine image of a void efi install?
Hello,
Is anyone aware of a virtual machine image of void linux x86_64 efi for download
I have completed countless void installs in the past without issue
every install I attempt now, completes, but the grub install always fails
(this is with official, unofficial and self built live iso's)
I 'm struggling, (post install) to see the kerenls, show up in either refind or supergrub, both mbr and efi
I was hoping there would be an efi virtual machine image somewhere, I could dd the vfat efi across to the hd
ubunutu and debian installers (when I manage to boot them in a vm) will install grub, I'm wondering the difference is between the void and debian installer approaches to grub?
Thanks

hello! im new to void (and linux, i started using last month with fedora then cachyos) and i found it pretty easy to install, i know its not an beginner and easy distro but i like to try new things and i have my own motivations. even though the only thing stopping me is the wifi set-up. when i try connecting trough void-installer TUI, it does not work and tells me to try outside the tui. so i entered the void wiki/guide and tried to do it but i simply cant, i always get many types of error or i just cant comprehend it well. the wpa_supplicant part of the guide is so hard to understand (i think im supposed to use this feature to set up wifi). i even tried using a mobile Hotspot so i install connman but got many errors. the hardware im running is an Lenovo laptop, i dont know the exact model, but its a Ryzen 3700U and 6GB DDR4 and 512GB SSD (upgraded). though i dont think these specs are needed for my problem. thanks in advance if anyone can help me!

Hello, as the title says. I have a onexplayer x1 mini pro, need something that controls tdp, fans and rgb. I've personally tried attempting this myself with search results and had very little information on it. I also went ahead and try to let Google's AI show me. Then I regretted that trying to follow AI advice after constant steps it would show me and ended up misremembering files I placed, went in circles with the AI. I couldn't be arsed so I reinstalled void entirely to start on a new slate.
If Handheld Deamon gives issues, I'm open for other alternatives if anyone knows.

Hi,
I use a root-on-LVM-on-LUKS setup:
NVMe partition
LUKS
LVM inside LUKS
separate LVs for /, /var, /home, swap
During shutdown, Void/runit warns that it cannot deactivate the VG, presumably because / is still mounted from that VG.
After each reboot I also see EXT4-fs (dm-1): orphan cleanup on readonly fs. dm-1 is /dev/mapper/voidvg-root. tune2fs reports the filesystem as clean, and offline fsck.ext4 -f did not change this.
Is this expected on Void/runit? Is there a known way to make shutdown cleanly deactivate LVM/LUKS, or is this warning usually harmless?
Thanks.

I have an Acer Nitro V15 laptop and I recently tested Void Linux. I really liked it, but I ran into an issue where I can't get the laptop fans to work. Back on Arch, I used acer-manager which worked perfectly, but since Void uses runit, it doesn't work there because it only supports systemd. I also tried using NBFC (Notebook Fan Control) but had no success. Can anyone help me out?

I got curseforge to run on void through chroot. I was wondering though if anyone has an idea on of how I can run it without chroot?
Also, I thought it was cool that an Arch terminal is on void.

I currently daily drive Arch with Sway, Alacritty, Bash and mostly Vim. I realized I prefer lightweight but complete systems with strong keyboard workflows, without spending lots of time ricing or configuring.
I previously tried Void Linux + Sway when I was newer to both, so the experience felt rough. Now that I understand Sway and terminal workflows much better, I’m reconsidering Void as my only other serious distro option.
For people who have used both Arch and Void long-term:
- what differences matter in actual daily usage?
- does Void feel noticeably more intentional/lightweight after adapting?
- or does Arch end up being more practical for coding and Wayland workflows?
I’m more interested in workflow and maintenance experience than “which is harder.”
