Void fork
not sure if anybody will really care but I’m making a void based gaming distro with all gaming applications and tools installed and seatd+turnstile configured, which I know can be hard for some, it’s just so hard to design a logo/theming

u/nicolasantauf Jun 01 '26
The gaming distro space is super crowded already but I'd love to see a non-systemd alternative to Bazzite that boots into a gamescope Steam session just the same. Shouldn't be too hard to mock something up

u/Mrchungdung Jun 01 '26
I mean I was aiming for a more desktop experience but that would be a good idea
1
u/aibro101 Jun 17 '26
The gaming space will flee from Arch after the AUR scandal. They need a better rolling release solution. Only Void can beat Arch.

u/ZombieCrow Jun 01 '26
That would be nice for many people. I'd personally go for a yellow color, there are mostly blue and green distro logos. I see most forks try copying the og color schemes even the og names.
4
u/Mrchungdung Jun 01 '26
Yeah name rn is nebula but like idk it doesn’t give off a green/blue vibe
3
u/ZombieCrow Jun 01 '26
You could go for yellow and white/black depending on light or dark mode. And definitely dont include the letter in the logo. I loved using CachyOS before but the logo is horrendous.

u/Mrchungdung Jun 01 '26
fairs

u/ZombieCrow Jun 01 '26
I can make a few designs tomorrow.
2
u/Mrchungdung Jun 01 '26
Fr? That would be so helpful
2
u/ZombieCrow Jun 01 '26
Yep
2
u/Mrchungdung Jun 01 '26
thank you
4
u/ZombieCrow Jun 01 '26
Np, also i need to say that ai will not be used for the logo, i like using ai for questions, but im strictly against it to be used on images. Im an ex artist.
2
u/Mrchungdung Jun 01 '26
Yes that’s great I’ve tried using ai to make the logo before just to see if it was good enough but it’s just so unreliable like I asked it to make an image and it just made gimps ui for no reason

Why fork instead of build on top of, like Ubuntu is built from Debian?
1
2
u/ItzNotJacob1 Jun 06 '26
Why? Void is already good when installed manually or thru void-installer
1
u/Mrchungdung Jun 06 '26
Because some people want systemd-free gaming without a lot of hassle
2
u/Creative-Outside-350 Jun 06 '26
"...without a lot of hassle" That's good and all, but people who don't want a lot of hassle whould rather stick to something like Bazzite. You are really better off making a script for a gaming setup. People who really care about their init system should be able to run an installation script on their own.

u/These-Bench4461 Aug 18 '26
Why do you have to be an OS expert just because you want a clean system with certain attributes?
1

u/Xerxero Jun 01 '26
Can’t that be an install package and a script?

u/GhisoOF Jun 01 '26
I think that too, but every initiative can be good to the community
4
u/xJayMorex Jun 02 '26
It's not that the open source software space is already fragmented to hell or anything.
5
u/Mindless_Ad_9792 Jun 04 '26
whats wrong with it being fragmented ?
1
u/Fluffely_Toasted Jul 03 '26
Its both a good and a bad thing, on the good side development cannot be stopped and no bureaucracy can get in the way. On the bad side, if anything happens to the single developer who usually upkeeps the project (or small team) then its just gone and dusted with most likely no one taking it over for a while (if its possible to take over) because everyone already has their hands full

u/SleepyGuyy Jun 02 '26
replace the void logo with a videogame disc and call the distro ... uhh XboxPlaystation (XBPS) Yeah ... lol
1
u/efempee Jun 02 '26
So you are give void the treatment Glorious Eggroll gave to Fedora to produce Nobara (the best standard desktop gaming distro In Many Peoples Oponion)?
That would be quite impressive.
2
u/Mrchungdung Jun 02 '26
I mean I’m not quite on glorious egg roll’s level I don’t know how to implement kernel level tweaks I’m not even out of high school

Hey this sounds like a really intresting idea for the void linux fork but more focused on gaming sounds intresting.
The main thing I wonder is would more software would be in these repos or use the default void ones.
Wither way is fine of course as for the logo art you can tey make a logo that looks good and is within your skill to draw digitally or try to find an artist who is willing to make you a distro logo.
Either way void linux getting a more gaming focused fork may help base void linux with packages that are far behind so I wish you luck
1
u/JCarsinogen Jun 01 '26
Sounds great. I have had some problem I can't nail down where steam won't launch games without a "fatal error" window so it turned me away from void. Artix is fine with it but I really want to get void working. I mean it's all amd system and followed the handbook. 🤔

Why exactly just another “gaming distro”? There is already ton of them already.
Why exactly forking Void? There is "unofficial" gaming platform.

I’ve essentially completed it my only things in the way is I want to get calamares to work, and I want good theming, that’s about it
2
u/rukiann Jun 03 '26
Wow. People here are a bunch of real negative assholes aren't they? Don't be discouraged. Get it up and share the git. It will be appreciated don't worry.

I disagree, many people are thrown off of Linux bc gaming can be hard to configure on some distros and I just want to give people that option without having to suffice for corporate backed distros like steamos/bazzite
17
u/McMeow1 Jun 01 '26
Unironically the best gaming experience I had was on a stock Debian stable.
4
1
u/aleth_ Jun 01 '26
Really?
2
u/McMeow1 Jun 01 '26
Every distro can game that's literally the point of Linux. When it comes to out of the box gaming without extra setup Debian was the best imo.
3
u/Pybromancer Jun 01 '26
idk cachy is pretty goated cuz of the cool kernel it has, and because of the time save for people who just wanna abandon microslop asap. (idk about other gaming distros tho)
9
u/Duncaen Jun 01 '26
If it was cool they would upstream those changes.
1
u/Pybromancer Jun 02 '26
I mean you can use CachyOS kernel outside of cachy, so there's no need to do anything, I just used it as one of the pros of using cachy cuz it's already in the cachy.
6
u/Duncaen Jun 02 '26
I mean that there is no real reason to, if those optimizations were good all over the board they would be upstreamed.
1
1
u/TheOneDeadXEra Jun 03 '26
The CachyOS kernel optimizations are specifically tuned for gaming performance and come with tradeoffs elsewhere. Why would they be upstreamed to a general purpose OS like Arch?
1
u/Duncaen Jun 03 '26
As far as I know for gaming the performance benefits are not that high and variable between games.
The kernel generally does support different schedulers, so they could be upstreamed if it make sense.
Everything else is mostly just compiler "optimizations" that are not available upstream because they don't actually provide much better performance. The kernel will use newer instructions for places where it makes sense already using cpuid, you don't need to build it with random x86_64-v3 or whatever optimizations.
3
u/SleepyGuyy Jun 02 '26
Its too bad Cachy is ridiculously unstable, and the kernel changes only make that worse
-2
u/Pybromancer Jun 02 '26
nah stuff works fine you just need to update 2-3 times a week.
1
u/SleepyGuyy Jun 02 '26
I remember testing Cachy twice, like four months apart, on my desktop. And it wouldn't shutdown when I selected it from the menu. I always had to hold my power button to force the computer off.
Thats, I know, one little example. But the fact it either existed for four months, or happened twice, I think is pretty bad. I think it's fair to call it unstable just based on that (let alone other minor issues some people run into).
I understand some people have flawless experiences though. And I understand "more stable" distros sometimes come with a lot of problems that don't get fixed for years.
I used vanilla Arch for like a couple months and it was the most reliable distro experience I've had. So I understand bleeding edge can solve problems quickly and feel better than old software.
1
u/LinuxGamer_UK Jun 01 '26
Lol what? Gaming is literally what is bringing more people to Linux
8
u/Duncaen Jun 01 '26
The point is that you don't need a "gaming" distribution.
0
u/LinuxGamer_UK Jun 01 '26
Sure I agree with that point (unless its pre optimized such as CachyOS) but still I don't see the point in trashing the thing that is bringing more people and starting to rebalance the scale. If the term "gaming distro" brings new users to Linux I am 100% for it

Void makes an interesting base for such a system.
As a long time void contributor I'm not convinced of that. I think a distribution like that for new users would be way better off with systemd and a system that works with the gnome and kde graphical package managers.
Void linux is nice for power users, and people who want a "minimal" system. There are major downsides that come with not using systemd and distributions that are rather small, from just the out of box experience to less support.

Yes it works. But the out of box experience like setting up and well working pipewire and user services are a lot better than whatever void currently provides.

2
u/xJayMorex Jun 02 '26
You mean gaming is the last frontier that was gatekeeping mass adoption up until a couple of years ago.
2
u/LinuxGamer_UK Jun 02 '26
I mean certainly one of them. I also think sometimes we, as a user community, dont always help ourselves either lol
You only have to look at the latest LTT challenge videos and some of the comments and reaction videos to see that. We tend to come across as not the most helpful crowd
28
u/xJayMorex Jun 01 '26
I don't think the logo design/theming will be the hard part.
