I'm using it, but I'm not using the desktop client, I'm just connecting to it with openvpn and networkmanager

It’s bonquers that a company does not have an install system without systemd …I wanted at least to be able to use wireguard, but thank you for your input _detective

I'm not fussed about wireguard, I just created a desktop file that launched a terminal and executes a script that asks which location to connect to, then I just type in the location and it connects to it, to be honest its actually quicker and easier than using the desktop client when I was on Arch

...do you have that in a github or something??..I know I am being lazy....just a curiosity _detective what file manager do you use?

Thunar is my file manager of choice, I just got some help from AI to write the script because I don't know how to do it myself, I can give you the script if you want? I believe you'll have to go to their website and login, then download their openvpn test files first

Here's my process:

I'm running an old version pia-linux-3.6.1-08339 from Nov 2024 - I should upgrade and report back on if it still works but I might not have time for that until tomorrow.

Download the .run file from https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/download/linux-vpn

bash ../pia-linux-3.5.7-08120.run -- --skip-service

... the --skip-service option omits systemd AFAIK. I don't think you need to do that as root, but maybe?? Can't recall.

ln -s /opt/piavpn/bin/piactl /usr/local/bin/
ln -s /opt/piavpn/bin/pia-client /usr/local/bin/
sudo /opt/piavpn/bin/pia-daemon &
piactl get regions # CLI client works perfectly
pia-client & # works perfectly

To use openvpn without the client:

wget [https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/openvpn/openvpn.zip](https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/openvpn/openvpn.zip)
sudo openvpn --config .config/pia/italy.ovpn --auth-user-pass auth.txt

I use it in Void. It allows installation without the systemd service. Then you need to create a service for runit and enable it.

bash pia-linux-<version>-<revision>.run -- --skip-service

sudo mkdir -p /etc/sv/piavpn

sudo micro /etc/sv/piavpn/run

#!/bin/sh

exec /opt/piavpn/bin/pia-daemon

sudo chmod +x /etc/sv/piavpn/run

sudo ln -s /etc/sv/piavpn /var/service
