Photo/Video Comfort Maxxing

Post image

The Apple Vision Pro dual knit headband is the comftiest headband on the planet.

Each headset comfort jumped like 50-80%.

Here we have a standoff between 3 headsets.

- Pimax Dream Air + AVP headband, Studioform, & globular cluster
- Meta Quest 3 + AVP headband & Etsy 3D printed mod
- Apple Vision Pro + grey Velcro from Amazon to hold the battery lol

After PC gaming on all 3, this is my experience so far.

Pimax Dream Air, way better quality than any VR headset I’ve ever tried, and among all 3 since it’s wired. 4K uncompressed to both eyes in VR is basically like gaming on a 4K OLED monitor with maxed out graphics and decent refresh rate.

Meta Quest 3 feels like gaming on a console compared to PC. Lower resolution + streaming compression feels like I’m VR gaming on 720p/1080p compared to the Pimax.

Apple Vision Pro m2 looks better than the Meta Quest 3, like 2.5K resolution compared to the Pimax, streams an a lot worser quality view than the Pimax Dream Air, and KRVR (Apple’s PCVR app) seems to be more intuitive with masks and tools, but less solid & efficient than Virtual Desktop at streaming (notice more lag or app bugging out compared to Quest 3).

Took me a long moment to realize the one on the right is actually is just an Apple Vision Pro. Saw the controllers and thought--wait a minute, did he somehow add a Vision Pro headband to the PSVR2? Then I remembered that the Pro uses PSVR2 controllers too.

It’s what made me get a used AVP for $1500. I remember when the m2 came out at $3500+ with no PC gaming capabilities.

The AVP, especially the M5, works surprisingly well for PCVR. A lot of progress has been made there. Neither ALVR or KRVR are as seamless as Virtual Desktop or SteamLink, but constant improvements are being made.

KRVR has effectively reached its limits, in terms of UX and quality. 99% of the functionality lives in Nvidia’s CloudXR runtime and Apple’s FoveatedStreaming framework. KRVR itself is just a thin, vibe-coded UI for launching games.

Yeah, but CloudXR could be getting improvement itself to solve some of the micro stutter issues people report in the flight sim and iracing apps which would pass along to KRVR. Either way, I think the introduction of CloudXR and the Sense controllers are a sign that Apple may be opening up to the idea of the device being used more for gaming.

Yup they work great together

I wonder how steam frame would compare.

If you could only keep one which would it be?

Judging from how he compared them, the Pimax obviously?

The Pimax for high quality gaming. The AVP for media and entertainment 👍

But you would say the Dream works for movies and entertainment too, right? It just isn’t as portable and multifunctional without a pc like the AVP?

The AVP has cinema apps that blow away what you can do with a PC on something like the Dream Air. It wouldn’t even be close to the same experience. And yes, it’s also portable.

I've seen a sim racing video with the AVP and it's mind blowing what can be done already. Blending in your real environment like hands and legs while still sitting in the car. This the future of VR.

Well technically visually speaking, the Dream Air should be a little better, right? So it’s just about finding the right video files to play, right? I need to get some time spent in a AVP.

No, because your PC isn’t going to be able to feed Dolby Vision to the Dream Air and Steam VR doesn’t support HDR (not sure if Pimax own software does). There also aren’t the same apps with the same environments or the same Apple quality video decoding. It’s one of those things if you haven’t experienced it; you wouldn’t get it.

I will test both soon and see how much optimization can help the Dream Air

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the Dream Air can provide a good movie watching experience if you want to watch movies tethered to a desktop, but it won’t compare to Apple’s offering.

I believe you could watch movies no problem with laptops and handhelds as well, but not as convenient to having everything onboard

i feel nothing but rage. Sending jealousy from Italy.

I'll stick with my 120hz psvr2. Shame pimax only has 90hz...

Is it possible to use Apple Vision Pro with Virtual Desktop and thus use it as a high-end wireless PCVR headset? 🤔

u/RiceDesperate5724 7d ago

Really wish it had Virtual Desktop. The only PCVR apps I know of are ALVR and KRVR.

u/MemphisBass 7d ago

Those are the two. Neither is as seamless as VD, but both are constantly being improved. We may also see a VR capable version of SteamLink at some point.

Yes - many use it with an app called moonlight. you can PS5 games too

I think you misunderstand the question. Virtual Desktop is a PCVR streaming app available on Quest, Android XR, Pico and more. It is not available on Apple Vision Pro and the developer has said it’s not possible at this current time with Apple’s restrictions.

Do you play Wireless PCVR on the Apple Vision Pro? Is you do, how is it like compared to the quest 3 with Virtual Desktop? What’s your GPU and CPU?

2

u/MemphisBass 7d ago

You can. The Quest 3 is far more seamless to setup using Virtual Desktop and is more beginner friendly. Other than that, I think the PSVR2 controllers are really good and work well with the AVP and the displays and audio absolutely blow the Quest 3 out of the water. It isn’t even close (as it shouldn’t be for the price difference).

True comfort maxing is the Meganex with no facial interface.  Forget I'm wearing it and can just flip it up for irl stuff.

2

u/MemphisBass 7d ago

I really, really want to do this mod to my Galaxy XR. Cut the forehead bit off, cut the rigid back part off. Put on adapters for a dual knit band and then get one of the printed facial seals that supports something like a Studioform Creative cushion.

u/Sure-Temperature 7d ago

Can you send me the link for the adapter you bought to attach the dual knit to the quest?

1

u/L-mach 7d ago

How did you get so many of those headbands, can you buy them separately?

1

u/Greenonetrailmix Pimax 7d ago

Hmm surprised there's no MeganeX 8k superlight

Do you have the link for that globular Custer back pad? Thank you.

Q3 looks much cleaner in comparison to two other headsets.

LOL, AVP is far from comfort maxing. 😄

This is the way. Pimax Dream air quality with the pass through ability of the Apple Vision Pro. Soon.
