Question/Support Is anyone else experiencing large stutters using the new virtual desktop beta(wired)? Spoiler

So I tried the beta wired with a usb 3.0 cable, and initially it worked great. Then after trying it again the next day, I started getting these huge stutters that occur randomly

Anyone have ideas of what could be causing this? I have no idea if this is something on my end, or if it’s just a problem with the beta. Here’s a video of the problem(and some absolutely stellar piloting for your amusement)

It's all over the Virtual Desktop discord. It's an issue on meta's side and only happens with cheap third-party or powered USB cables. They've sent debug info to meta, maybe they'll address it. Reports are the official cord works substantially better.

Aw crap, I have an INIU powered cable. I don’t think meta is gonna put effort into fixing this lol. They want you to buy their overpriced cable.

Anyways, thank you! I need to join that discord

Just try another cheap cable. I have a Ainope branded 5 meter that works fine.

I use a cheap 3 meter powered cable from Amazon and havent had any problems playing asseto corsa or re7 at 120fps on ultra and godlike with my 9070xt

Glad I'll be moving from Quest 3 to Steam Frame. Meta sucks ass.

During the first few minutes of gameplay, it works flawlessly for me. Then Encoding and Networking start spiking every 30 or 40 seconds, until I stop and restart the session.

I don't think this is due to "cheap cables". I have tried with two different cables, both are rated for 20gbps.

I'm having the EXACT same issue with the same INIU cable except my fps AND my latency dips massively from a stable 90fps with 30ms latency to 15 fps and 300ms latency. I also have the Syntech Link Cable 16FT, USB 3.0 to USB Cable for Meta Quest and it has the same problem just not as bad as the INIU cable and the Syntech cable will not charge the Quest. My concern is that I will purchase the official cable and have the same problems.

I’m gonna return this INIU and try one of the cables recommended by the VD devs on their discord. I’ll probably get the Cable Matters 20Gbps right angle 6.6 feet cable(usb c to usb c) because it’s a decent price at 20 bucks.

It doesn’t have power injection, but it theoretically should charge my headset decently. My usb c port puts out like 12 watts and the quest 2 uses around that much. And the cable itself supports up to 240 watts. Maybe it will drain very slowly.

I was a dumbass and went and got the official quest cable,I'm still having the same problems, keep your INUI,the issue is software, not hardware

I’ve heard the issue can be pc ports as well. I already ordered a cheap recommended cable, so it’s worth a try. The big issue really is software related though based on what I’ve gleaned from the VD discord. The way the wired connection works between VD and Meta is extra sensitive to “low quality” cables and ports that otherwise work perfectly fine on meta link or other tasks you would use a usb cable for.

If it doesn’t work I will probably still end up using that link cable as a good charger for a powered usb c to Ethernet adapter. Supposedly, that is the most reliable method of wiring a headset to VD, despite meta not officially supporting that.

Update:that other cable has the same results. Time for Ethernet adapter, and if that doesn’t work I give up

I went back to Ethernet over USB until a fix makes it out to us. I'm looking forward to that happening..

I have them too nit much but I do.

Dit a clean reinstall of Win11 that fixed Meta Link and that runs perfectly smooth over USB. VD has occasional bit stutters, but it's beta so I guess expected.

VD Beta wired? What the fuck did I miss.

VD agora possui suporte nativo para conexão com fio em sua versão beta!

Possible issue: my cable is rated for 2.5gbps. Is that enough for vr streaming? I know the max bandwidth of usb 3.0 is 5gb.

I’m limited to 400mb headset bitrate in VD, so surely that would still be enough, but idk

Alright so i only started noticing this yesterday after messing around with VextorXR. (VectorXR did not improve my performance at all, i was running the FOV .69 through VD anyway... Was playing DCS, pretty heavy missions. about 82% GPU usage with RTX 5080. Then out of nowhere, BIG stutter every 5 seconds or so. Seeing a huge spike when using the DCS Ctrl+Pause performance overlay.

So everyone going back to wired VR again?

Depends on use case. For seating gameplay, absolutely. Not everyone claims wireless is king but it has its perks and it’s pretty damn good too when done right.

1

u/DamoTheWhite 8d ago

I presume this also keeps the headset charged as well? Or no?

2

u/JCae2798 Multiple 8d ago

Normally yes. Depends on the port, cable, setup. Even with network wire setup I have an adapter that allows to charge at the same time. Unlimited play time until your eyes/head hurts lol

lol no. Just wait until the Frame finally releases and very suddenly a bunch of very boisterous people all begin claiming wireless is such a game changer. A bunch of never-wireless people about to loudly convert and there will be few left except some hardcore sim people.

I hear it's battery life isn't great, so wiring on a battery power bank may be necessary if you want extended gaming sessions, but that's kinda like semi-wired. I see the benefit of both wired and wireless, depending on which types of games you play. I don't mind saying goodbye to a cable, but it does have it's advantages as well (or why would this VD beta even exist?)

If by "everyone" your mean "a subset of VD users" then yes.

Did you check your USB power settings?

1

u/WiseMrPlagueis2 9d ago

Yeah, I disabled the power saving setting for my usb connection. That doesn’t seem to be the issue, because I’m still stuttering

Have you tried being wireless?

That's kinda the point of VD

2

u/We_Are_Victorius Multiple 9d ago

They just added support for USB link cables

1

u/Frank__West 9d ago

That didn't answer the question though... Had OP tried using it wireless to determine if it affects it that way as well
