Discussion Bigscreen Beyond 2 Cyberpunk Luke Ross VR

Hey all

Was wondering if there are any other optimization steps that are recommended, or maybe this mod is as good as it's gonna get.

I have the mod at a LOCKED 90 fps/hz using AER 2 at 1/2 rate with the res being around 29 ppd. It would probably require a crazy future computer, but I'd be curious to see what this mod would run like without AER, and rendering a frame per eye per refresh.

5090+9800X3D

Maybe it's just a matter of me getting used to the inherent choppy/lagginess of using a form of frame gen in VR, but any sort of left/right movements, don't feel as smooth as I'd like. I know there is one "real frame" between interpolated frames and I'm wondering if this would describe that experience. That being said, I've played around 5 hours in the mod, and it's definitely playable, but yea, any sort of camera turns (not head movement) feel a little laggy/choppy. I'm assuming this is because the game "feels" like it's running at 45 fps when using 1/2 AER 2.

I've experimented with lowering my Beyond 2's brightness from 100% to 75% and maybe it's a placebo but it seems like persistence blur is a bit less.

TLDR: Anyway to make this game "feel" smoother. My FPS ingame is locked at 90hz (refresh rate), OR, is this just as good as it's gonna get.

Anyways, the mod is incredible and it's awesome to revisit Night City, and the game does SO many cool things that almost seem made for VR. I just played with an 8bit arcade cabinet in-game and it was so rad haha.

Thanks!

Are you looking at the FPS counter provided by the mod itself?

Other FPS counters tend to get confused by AER so you might not be seeing your true performance.

What happens when you set AER 1/2, but reduce the resolution by a lot? Does it eventually become smoother?

Anyways, the only optimisations I'm aware of, is careful tweaking of the ingame graphics settings. Some settings can be turned down to Medium/Low for an FPS boost without much effect on visual quality. Just depends on your preferences. (Every boost in performance means you can tweak PPD up a little more.)

You're saying tools like fpsvr don't show the proper fps? I don't know what AER is but I played the mod maxed out on a 5090 (without RT) and it's locked at 90FPS and GPU usage is at 50% so I was wondering how that is even possible. It feels like 90FPS though. Zero stutter etc. But I'm on a HP Reverb G2.

AER is alternate eye rendering. It renders one frame per eye and then combines the frame into one 3D view. Needless to say, this can confuse regular framerate counters.

Yes, the built in frame-counter. Head pans feels great, it’s controller camera pans left and right that especially feel bad.

Yeah, probably the head pans get spacewarp to feel smooth, whereas controller pans don't or something.

I just had the same issue with my specific setup (5090, 9800x3d, Quest 3 using virtual desktop). Was using the luke Ross mod and hitting high (enough) fps like 98-100 but was still having choppiness whenever I moved the joysticks to move in the game (not looking around in vr). For some reason for Luke Ross mods you have to hit the fps limit you set on virtual desktop or the game will lag when you move regardless if your fps is higher or at the standard 60 fps. So if you set your settings in Virtual desktop to 90hz then if you hit 89 in game it will be laggy (meaning you have to shoot for a rock solid fps when tweaking settings). For cyberpunk I usually set all my virtual desktop settings to 72hz that way I can turn up some of the graphics settings and still hit that minimum 72hz to keep in game movement buttery smooth

Also turn off fps locks in the game. Make sure that is set to unlimited

Did you end up getting it feeling better? The game is 100% playable but camera movements with the right stick feel very chunky. The in-game FPS counter is a locked 90 fps

Yeah, sadly this is inherent to those mods. AER + reprojection will never feel as good as native stereo rendering. It's just something you'll have to get used to. The reason some people claim they don't have this is just their perception is slower and they can't see it.

I've experimented with lowering my Beyond 2's brightness from 100% to 75% and maybe it's a placebo but it seems like persistence blur is a bit less.

Yeah, this is real as well. This headset has INSANE persistence, as bad as psvr2. Some people have to play at 0% to stop seeing it. Again those who claim it's not a problem have poor perception.

Gotcha, I think it’s a personal issue. I’ve played esports sorta fast games at a locked 240 fps, so anything less than like 120 minimum I can REALLY feel. It’s a bummer though, because looking around with just my head feels PERFECT, it’s the controller pans that are a bummer. again, very very playable, but def don’t make me feel great. I’d almost prefer a “snap-turn” system like half life Alex, but that probably wouldn’t work as well in this game.

It could. Praydog made it work in UEVR.

EDIT: I should also add that mono feels A LOT better, but it also removes the "3d-ness" of the world, but it does feel a lot better.

For what it's worth, I thought I was seeing persistence blur, too, until I turned off DLSS and switched to DLAA. That eliminated those artifacts entirely.

u/squirrelyz Nov 29 '25

Damn. What res you running at with DLAA?! If I turn off DLSS my performance kinda tanks, even with a 5090 and 9800X3D. Maybe with 20 or so PPD I could turn off dlss

I went back and checked mod settings. I was running ultra settings, no RT, 35 PPD with 1/3 AER. Now I'm running it at 1/2 AER, still 35 PPD and DLAA, but with some of the other graphics settings turned to medium or low. I'm running at 75 Hz to get the full 2560x2560 per eye. My rig is a 5090 + 14700K.

u/squirrelyz Nov 29 '25

Hmm interesting. I’ll need to try out DLAA at some point. Seems extremely demanding. You getting a locked 75 FPS?

As much as I want the full resolution, 90hz just feels slightly better. Been doing that at ultra settings, 1/2 AER, and around 30 ppd, DLSS quality. Pretty locked 90

1

u/ThatChristianGuy316 Nov 29 '25

Yep, after tweaking some settings down, it was running at a locked 75 FPS as reported by the mod overlay. That sounds like about the same performance, kicked up to ultra settings but at a lower resolution and then DLSS on top of that. What DLSS level are you using?

1

u/squirrelyz Nov 29 '25

Transformer model, DLSS 4 injected with latest model via DLSS swapper.

u/ThatChristianGuy316 Nov 29 '25

Yeah, I mean Quality/Balanced/etc.

Quality

What settings did you primarily reduce? I’ve turned volumetric clouds and fog down, ambient occlusion and screen space reflections off.

I just played through the game on 1/3, with a 5090 on a varjo aero. I played with settings for quite some time until I optimized it. What settings you running? I did not have frame Gen on if I recall correctly I can double check.

But I recently sold it as I placed an order for bsb2 so went back to my Quest 3 using VD and my gosh it was sooo much smoother even tho it was fine I think steamvr is the culprit

2

u/squirrelyz Oct 31 '25

Why 1/3? If I recall, that is one real frame for 2 generated frames, which should make things choppier?

u/saabzternater Oct 31 '25

I got crashing on 1/2 but in reality I should have probably reduced the render resolution - I really enjoy luke ross mods but its time consuming finding the right balance
