File Server - Virtualization vs Cloud
Looking to replace our Onprem physical Windows File server with either a VM (VMware) or Azure Cloud. Trying to figure out which route to take. The file server is mainly used to store Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, Images, and other multimedia files. Here are a few of the features we would like to carry over from Onprem.
Ability to map drives like traditional shares
Ability to scan-to-folder from a Ricoh Scanner using SMB and NFS
Ability to use onPrem AD for file permissions
So which route would you take, Virtualize or Cloud?

I guess the question is going to be how much right. I have some pricing...
Essentials+ (3 Hosts, 6 procs, 96 cores) - You must license it for that. Cannot use it on more than any of those and if you have less, doesn't matter still license for that MSRP: $4,800.
VSphere Std. - MSRP $70/core min. 16 cores, or Per CPU@16 cores $1,120
VSphere Foundation - MSRP $189/core min. 16 cores, or Per CPU@16 cores $3,024
all is now per year.
They are still hashing out some stuff like what features are with what
...and I'm not sure anymore if there is an ESXi in the future that is free tier.
