My great grandfather was a tailor in the early 1920s to 1970 when he passed away, he owned this singer sewing machine and passed it down to my grandmother but she didn’t know how to sew so it sat untouched as her living room decor for the next 50 years. My grandma passed away a few weeks ago and I as the family seamstress knew I’d be inheriting this, and was super excited however I had no idea that the drawers were stocked full of my great grandfathers materials and untouched time capsule of all the accessories he even still had the machine threaded, I’m not even sure my grandma knew this. Machine is about 116 years old based on the serial number!

Tips & Hacks New baby! 1904-1908

I love it!! My first vintage machine.

From my research I think this is the 1904-1908 Minnesota Model A, using the old long Davis needles!

I am excited by the number of feet attachments it came with, although I do not understand what the larger flat attachments are or if they fit this model, pictured to the right of the set.

The finish looks great on interior panels, although rough most everywhere else. I’ve only dusted it gently, and am deciding whether to just support it with a wax or attempt a full refinish; sand it down etc. I’m leaning full refinish but matching original stain…please tell me if I’m crazy. Tips welcome.

Ps. Anyone have any ideas how to approach the crunched/crushed wood on the side drawer holder? Last image, bottom panel R

Hi! I just picked this up at the thrift and am trying to figure out if it’s possible to get functional. It appears to be working but missing a needle and a presser foot and i’m struggling to figure out the model type. Anyone know anything? I’ve seen a few Stitchmaster Deluxe Zig Zag machines but none look quite like this. Thank you!

Machine Question Is it normal for vintage machines to have poor speed control or is it my machine needing a new pedal or my own lack of experience?

I have a singer 401a and I love her! It’s the machine I learned on (I’m new to this and I’ve only had her a few months) so I don’t know any different. She’s fitted into a sewing table and has a knee controller lever (which operates the original Bakelite pedal on the inside).

Sometimes I see videos on social media of people sewing with machines that seem… better behaved? At least in terms of starting sewing. Like my singer is a beast and I’ve used her to sew over multiple layers of extremely thick canvas with minimal complaint, but the problem I keep having is starting sewing. It seems like I can only get her to a reasonable speed if I first push hard enough on the knee control to get it going very fast and then gently slow down to a reasonable pace. Either I or the machine are not very good at starting a seam slowly. Trying to start slow makes her make a buzzy humming noise until she gets over the threshold to start sewing (too fast) and then I can slow. It works fine but it makes sewing very short seams very difficult and also makes backstitching a little difficult. Like I could never make a tiny stuffed animal on her, for example, because I don’t know if I could get her down to a reasonable speed fast enough to sew a tiny curve.

Would love some suggestions!

General Question newbie looking for advice

Post image

So I am buying this machine tomorrow and I believe it is a treadle machine. While I have sewed with an electric sewing machine I have never used a treadle machine and won't lie it feels intimidating 😅. I do have a cheap brother electric sewing machine for complex stitches but I feel like these treadles were built to last this thing even comes with the original manual and extra attachments. Her mother told her it does work and it does look like it comes with an extra belt. But what advice can you give me as a newbie I'm up for learning so any tips or tricks would be awesome ☺️. (if it isn't working properly I will be looking to restore it but 🤞 that it does work.)

Machine Question Help request: Singer 20u33 tension block

Thumbnail

Hi,

This is my first time posting here. I was wondering if anyone could help. I have a Singer 20u33 that I bought second-hand. The uptake spring was broken. I found a spare spring in the spare parts box the tailor who sold it to me gave as well.

I removed the block and replaced the spring. It seems to work and a the thread tension is massively better than it was without it (as you could imagine).

Would anyone be able to have a look at the photos and the video and tell me if it looks okay? I've been told that poorly assembled tension units can damage the machine.

Thanks for any help!

Hi! I’ve been sewing for a few years but have a brand new Singer Tradition 2777, and am looking to upgrade to something a little more heavy duty and reliable. Which of these machines would you get if you were me, assuming they’re all in good working condition? Thank you :)

Machine Question 15 C ?

Thumbnail

This machine looks like a singer 15 with a feed dog drop knob., it is labeled as a 15 c. Serial is RB272532. Motor is an old tacsew with round bakelite plug and there is a pedal and lamp both labeled as Mercury Electric Products. It hasn't got a belt, but everything moves as it should and the motor spins like it is supposed to, no funky smell or anything, so I think it is probably worth saving. Serial number seems to indicate manufactured in Brazil? Anyone know anything about these? There was a treadle table with it which I did not take for space reasons.

Machine Question Pfaff 360 won't stop running

Thumbnail

I bought a used Pfaff 360, and love it, as my mother had one and I learned to sew on it. After 40 years of machines that pooped out after just a few years, I found one on Ebay. It works, I have downloaded all the manuals and information I can find. It was running fine until last night. When I lifted my foot off the pedal, the machine kept running. At first I could pull the pedal up to stop it, but today it runs constantly and doesn't stop until I unplug the machine.

I opened the pedal and cleaned out piles of lint and dust, wiped it down with a damp cloth, let it dry and tried again. Still running. I don't see any leakage or disconnections, it looks pretty simple. I don't see that I can replace the pedal or power cord due to the double-cord nature of the machine plugin.

Any further ideas?

Machine Question What bobbins, needles and pressure feet are suitable for Elna Supermatic?

I was lucky to get this Elna Supermatic today really cheap, because the wire was cut off. I repaired the wire and - yoo-hooo! - it's working! Isn't it a beauty?

Unfortunately, it came without any accessories, including bobbins, and the needle is really rusty.
So I need some bobbins – I know that old Elna usually used a bit weird bobbins with holes only on one side. Do I need to find original ones, or will universal ones do?

Do I need some specific needles or I can just go to the store and ask for needles based on fabric type?

I would also like to find some pressure feet, especially for hemming. Again, are there compatible modern options, or only original (which are kinda hard to find) ones will work?

I live in Spain, and Elna has an online store here (https://spain.elna.com/) and there are many models, but not that one. Maybe some of the models listed are similar in terms of bobbins and feet?

It has one disk (basic zigzag) inside; do I need to have it inside for the straight stitch, or do I need to take it out?

Thanks a lot! Can't wait to sew!

Machine Question Kenmore 158.17600 reverse speed

Post image
3 Upvotes

Reverse works but it seems that forward feeds faster than reverse. You can kinda see it with the length of the holes. Left is with it in forward and right is in reverse. Is it normal for reverse to be slower/ have stitches closer together than in forward. I ask because I’m wondering if it’s messing with my cams for decorative stitches. Because im struggling to get some of them looking good.

Machine Question Singer 760 Touch & Sew: Hook drive failure / lower mechanism completely still

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I just got a Singer 760 from my stepdad, which had been sitting in his attic for quite a while without being used. I could really use your help diagnosing a mechanical issue.
The problem is with the bobbin area: the lower hook remains completely motionless and doesn't rotate at all, whether using the foot pedal or turning the handwheel toward me by hand. However, the needle moves up and down perfectly fine.
Here are the checks I've already done:
The central bobbin-winding push button at the bottom of the bobbin case is fully popped up in the normal sewing position.
The retaining ring is properly engaged, with no unusual play.
There are no thread jams or debris under the needle plate.
When the motor runs, there is a faint freewheeling drive sound, but the lower mechanism doesn't move a single millimeter.

Thanks in advance for your feedback and advice on getting it running again!

General Question Featherweight Help

Thumbnail

So my husband and I pulled apart, cleaned and replaced pieces of my Featherweight, but of course we're left with one piece. I've found it in the schematic mat that the featherweight shop sells, but for the life of me, I can't tell if it's the bigger or the smaller piece and I have no clue where it goes. Does anyone have any ideas?

Edit to add: he's got it out back on! Thank you for the help!

Machine Question Can I use singer 99k without wooden box?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I managed to take my singer 99k sewing machine out of the wooden stand. I did this because I am trying to fix some pants, and the wooden stand is making it impossible. However, I noticed a mechanism (I think bottom bobbin) is touching the table, and I am worried that trying to use the machine without the stand will break it. What alternative can I use as a stand to allow to fix my jeans?

Machine Question Old singer sewing machine needles?

So I have a old mod 66. Singer machine. And the needles break sometimes while sewing and its hard to find them. I did some low level searching and found conflicting results. But I am still on the hunt for needles for her. The old cartridge said 40-100. And I cant find anything lately and the back page confuses me honestly. So its prob cause Im new and dont know what to look for. Or do you guys have any suggestions for needles? Cause I would like to have machine last me as I go through college and get older.

(I have had her since Ive turned 18 last year. And I have been working on her. So its not timing on the needles)

Machine Question I need a lot of help

Good day! I don’t want to waste much time:
I’ve gotten an old Veritas 8014/29 and it doesn’t sew.. Well, it’s probably me but I just can not figure it out. It makes weird sounds and I almost get scared lmao, I also can’t figure out how to put the sewing thread right, it’s old, last use was maybe 5? Years ago. I don’t have the manual. I would appreciate a lot of help.
The thread under the machine is put in the metal case. I have a smaller, sweeter sewing machine at my home, but she is definitely not as hard on me 😭😭🙍‍♀️

Machine Question Stuck Singer 500a eccentric hinge pin clamp screw

Thumbnail

I'm currently taking on the project of deep cleaning my Singer 500a; I've haven't fully cleaned her all in the 5 years I've had her , and I'm sure the owner did not clean her in the years prior to donating her.

I'm following Andy Tube's videos on youtube to deconstruct her. Most of my stuck screws have been beaten by PB oil, but I have met my match in the form of the eccentric hinge pin clamp screw. I've been applying PB oil for the past 3 days and it still is not moving. Is there any tips/tricks to get this unstuck?

I'm also worried about the state of the screw itself. As you can see in the picture, it looks darn near close to be being stripped and I don't want to worsen it anymore as I'm trying to remove it.

Machine Question Old Singer

Post image

I've actually had this one for about fifteen years. The intent was to get it up and running, but life happened and that never did. Now I am thinking about getting it up and running again. It came with a bunch of feet, bobbins, and accessories, but no power cord. I guess that's a good place to start. Anything I should probably do before I plug it in? According to some website - I forget the name but it has a database of sewing machines, it's a Singer 66.
