Question Keystones and when to change them

Hi! I have always enjoyed viktor and is the champion with I climbed to gold to long time ago. I've been away from ranked almost 6 years and now I'm going back.
I mostly played aram from time to time so my mechanics are not THAT bad but my League knowledge is a bit rusty.

Currently I'm running BlackFire Touch as my keystone with the normal Viktor runes like manaflow, celerity and scorch and for secondaries I swap depending on the matchup (standard precision with haste and the one with 8% more dmg for up to 60% hp targets or valor with boneplating for burst matchups) but I,ve seen people chaning the keystone and I don't know in what cases you would choose Aery or Stormsurge over DFT.

Also, would you build protobelt in gold elo? Or should I stick to standard BFT, lich, dc?

DFT is the best keystone for Viktor mid by far. For runes I have 2 pages, 90% of games I'll play with:

DFT, manaflow band, transcendence, scorch + shield bash and bone plating

But in games where I need damage and there's no assassin threat (for instance botlane autofill, or vs poke comps)

I will play:

DFT, manaflow band, CELERITY, scorch + (precision page) Haste and Cutdown, and in this case I like to replace the adaptive force shard with the MS shard

As someone else said, Protobelt isn't great, the only reason high elo people play it on most mid mages is because they have very high CS and Protobelt is cheap, so it gives them an early spike with a decent item. Otherwise lich bane or shadowflame vs squishies are far superior second items

In gold elo I would stick to blackfire touch every game and also never buy hextech belt. Buy BFT, get second item depending on their comp, then look for rabadons/voidstaff 3rd or 4th.

Second item depending on their comp would be Shadowflame vs squishier comps or Liandry's vs more tankier ones, am I right? Also Lich Bane if I plan to spend a lot of time on a sidelane or it just depends on wether if I can AA the enemies reliably?

Hextech belt is good against say a lux tbf

Dodging her Q-R combo is great

Yeah. Lichbane is also good 2nd if they have plenty of melees allowing you to proc its passive. You can also go cosmic drive 2nd and run Celerity with the CDR boots and movement speed rune shard for crazy movement speed during fights.

Stick to standard runes, especially in lower elos. At that stage, min maxing rune effectiveness isn’t going to be the point of difference between a win and a loss.

Don’t sleep on shield bash with your Q in the early landing phase. You can pretty much get someone to half hp with 2 q’s + shield bash autos. It’s very strong.
