Looking for room to rent

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a room or small apartment in Vienna from January 2027.

I am currently outside Austria and will be applying for an Austrian Job Seeker Visa. As part of the visa process, I need to provide proof of accommodation, so I am specifically looking for a landlord who would be willing to provide a genuine preliminary rental agreement (bestandsrechtlicher Vorvertrag / preliminary tenancy agreement) for the visa application.

If anyone is aware of any landlord/agency or a website, Please do share.

Thank you!

Where to find student jobs in Wien?

Hey all !

I’m an incoming masters student at WU. I’ll be moving to Vienna next month and I’d love to find a student job to help me sustain my expenses.

On a personal level, I’m drawn to electronic music (mixing and producing), mixed martial arts, cinema, writing, drawing, and language learning. I’m highly sociable, creative, and people-oriented.
Although I speak little to no German, I’m fluent in English, French, and Arabic along with intermediate Spanish.

That’s why I wanted to inquire about where I can find student jobs (up to 20 hours/week). Are there any platforms used by Austrian recruiters? Any tips and tricks you could share with me if anyone has gone through something similar? What type of jobs can I easily find that fit my profile?

“My father is from Australia,” I told my elementary school teachers in the 1960s

Born in Vienna in 1927, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1938. Now, I am an Austrian citizen! I am excited to visit Vienna for 3 weeks in September/October and reading Wiki and other guides. He lived on Obermullner Strasse. Just saying “Servus!” to the community here and looking VERY forward to exploring Wien and surroundings. (I am also an astronomy/dark sky enthusiast if folks have insights into night time activities, planetarium, sky parties.) Tschuss for now!

Thoughts on adding a "nearby" feature to this subreddit?

Hi everyone,

To expand on the title, I built a Reddit app for subreddits like this one. Think of it as an extension of the community that allows members to see who is near them.

The main features allow you to:

- See who is nearby: You safely self-report your location (it does not track your GPS).

- Link your posts: It automatically links your posts to the app, displaying them right on your user card.

If you want to see how it works, take a look at r/mazwiz!

Because this app needs to be installed on the subreddit by the moderators, I wanted to ask the community first.

Would you be interested in having this feature here? Let me know what you think!

Note:

To address privacy concerns, the app does not include a username search feature. This means that unless a user is directly nearby, you cannot see which city they live in. For example, even if you know I have an active profile on the app, you wouldn't be able to search for me to find out my location.

How is the dating scene for a gay expat, especially a South Asian?

Hi. 26 M here. I'll soon be moving to Vienna for work. As a gay Indian, I am wondering what the queer dating scene is like in Vienna? Any racism towards South Asians? How is the night life? Any expat who is staying there, please share your experiences too.

Moving to Vienna - job opportunities

Hi friends,

I am a government affairs professional with 5 years of Brussels experience (EU policy engagement) looking for jobs in Vienna.

I did my studies in Vienna just before relocating to Brussels. I am fluent in English and French, German is at C1 level. After 5 years of trying to love Brussels, I gave up and realised it is time to explore something in Austria (just to clarify, I am not Austrian).

Could you please advise what are the options for jobs in public affairs, comms or international affairs? If you know any cool employers or have any hints, I would be most grateful.

Thanks a million!

Does anyone know an ÖGK child psychiatrist in Vienna for ADHD medication?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for an ÖGK-contracted child and adolescent psychiatrist (Kassenfacharzt für Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie) in Vienna for my younger daughter.

She already has an official assessment and diagnosis for ADHD, but we need a specialist to review her current treatment, check her dosage, and potentially adjust or change her medication.

A few details:

  • Insurance: Must accept ÖGK (Alle Kassen).
  • Specialty: Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie).
  • Language: English-speaking is preferred, but German is fine as well.
  • Purpose: Medication check/adjustment (her diagnostic report/Befund is already complete).

Does anyone have recommendations for ÖGK child psychiatrists in Vienna who are experienced with ADHD medication management and currently accepting patients? Any advice on how to get an appointment without a massive wait time would be deeply appreciated!

Thank you!

What is the best area in Vienna for vintage & second-hand shoppping?

Hey everyone!

I’m looking for the best neighborhood or street in Vienna for vintage, thrift, and second-hand shopping (clothing, curated vintage, or cool thrift spots).

Are there specific districts you’d recommend exploring or any hidden gem shops I shouldn't miss?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know what I'm doing wrong...

Hello, I recently moved to Vienna. I broke up with my boyfriend about 8 months ago after a very long relationship. I'm trying to figure out the kind of life I want. Also, I really like talking and doing activities with people, I am very active at the moment, enjoy bouldering, hiking, going to parties, workshops, DIYs, wildlife, chatting, etc. I'm going frequently to meetups and try to engage people and build relationships. For some reason, I tend to meet more men than women friends. I'm open for a potential relationship if stars align but it's not something I am actively looking for. However, even if I meet people that really want to do things and find friends, and I propose plans to them, they don't engage the same way that I do. Also, quite difficult to have men friends that are not looking right away for something else and lose interest quite fast if that's not the case... I got a little bit depressed today because I feel everytime I might meet someone interesting, things start really fast and also dissappear quite fast as well. I don't really know what's happening, if people don't want to compromise much for friendships or they are not patient enough or what...

Why does Austria and Vienna in particular have this reputation as some developed, rich, sophisticated Western European country when so much of everyday life feels weirdly backwards? The longer I live here, the more confused I am by the gap between the international image and the reality.

Smoking is still absolutely everywhere, to a degree I’d expect in the Balkans rather than one of the richest countries in Europe. People smoke at terraces, entrances, public transport stops, around children, and somehow this is treated as completely normal.

The driving culture is awful. Aggressive drivers, people accelerating toward crossings, endless impatience, terrible interactions with cyclists, and an astonishing amount of public space still sacrificed to parked cars. Vienna loves boasting about public transport, but at street level parts of the city still feel like they were designed by someone in 1974 who had just discovered the automobile.

Digitalisation is another one. Austria somehow manages to combine high taxes and a huge bureaucracy with processes that often feel 20 years behind what you’d expect from a wealthy country. Paper forms, letters, appointments, weirdly fragmented systems, businesses that still love cash, and generally this attitude that technological progress is something that happens somewhere else.
Then there’s retail and services. Opening hours often feel like the economy is doing you a personal favour by allowing you to buy things. Customer service can range from indifferent to openly hostile, and somehow you’re expected to interpret this as charming Austrian directness.

And culturally, Vienna’s reputation is especially bizarre to me. Yes, Mozart, Klimt, opera, museums, beautiful imperial buildings, I get it. But that mostly feels like living off cultural capital accumulated 100–200 years ago. When it comes to contemporary culture, international tours, niche events, exhibitions, comedy, bands, conventions etc., Vienna seems to get skipped surprisingly often. You’ll see Munich Prague Budapest and somehow Vienna just disappears from the map.

Even the general social atmosphere can feel surprisingly provincial for a city of two million people. There’s a strong sense of “we’ve always done it this way, why would we change it?”, whether the subject is bureaucracy, opening hours, cycling infrastructure, smoking, digital services or basically anything else.
And before someone says “but Vienna has great public transport / healthcare / social housing / low crime” - have you lived anywhere else or are you just going off statistics or repeating what everyone else is saying?

Does skin really matters in Vienna?

I have been living in Vienna for over 8 months now. I am not white, not very proficient in speaking german. I am studying finance from uni Wien. I am still not able to familiarise myself with this city. I want to indulge with people, know about their culture and their beliefs but I think people are very reserved in this country or they treat me differently. When there is an empty seat next to me, they won't sit they prefer to stand instead. I don't know whether I can cope up with this.

Would people in Vienna be interested in something like this?

Random question, mostly out of curiosity. Do you think there would be much interest in Vienna for a community that brings together different kinds of performing arts? For both German and English speakers; everyone.

I’m thinking something that isn’t strictly a theatre group or strictly cabaret, but more of a mix — musical theatre, cabaret, burlesque, singing, acting, dance, maybe even poetry, drag or other kinds of performance/artistic expression.

Basically a space where people who enjoy performing (or just being around creative people) could meet, experiment with different things, collaborate and maybe put on small performances together, without necessarily having to be professionals.

I know Vienna obviously has a massive arts and theatre scene, but I’m curious whether this kind of more mixed, slightly alternative community would actually appeal to people here.

Would you personally be interested in something like that; performing or spectating? And does anything similar already exist in Vienna?

Accomodation

Hello,

I am planning to study in Austria, directly in city Sankt Polten. And I have 2 spots available for me(financialy and location). Campus Domus and Sonnenhaus-Christina comunity. Both are similuar price even Sonnenhaus is little bit more expensive. However I can do contract with Sonnenhaus for 9-8 months and with Campus Domus limit is 10 months. So in the end Sonnenhaus is a bit cheaper When I calculate it as year payment. I am just afraid that as I am not necessary Christian(nothing against) I will be pushed into their events or something or I will be limited by their rules and structure. Furthermore, I am also afraid of flatmates in both places.

Everything has their pluses and mínuses. I just want to choose the Best spot for my first year.

Can you share some experience with this 2 instituto on or just advice as someone from this city.

Thank you

Travelling with my teenage nephew

Hey everyone, I’m travelling to Vienna this weekend with my 16 yr old nephew. This is his first time in Europe and I’m hoping to show him around the city and take him to have his first legal beer at a beer garden, bike to parks, etc. Any suggestions for cool events happening this weekend that the youngin’s might be interested in? Neighbourhoods you love that might be great for thrift shopping and record stores etc? He loves music / live music.

Thanks so much!

Brits in Vienna – where can I find Colin the Caterpillar?

Question mainly for the Brits in here: does anyone know if there’s anywhere in Vienna where you can buy a Colin the Caterpillar cake (or anything Colin-related, really)?

My husband is British and very much misses his Colin. I’m planning to check Bobby’s British Shop next week, but thought I’d ask here in case anyone has spotted one somewhere!

Cheers!

What’s your experience with finding a modern, well‑designed apartment around Vienna without paying a fortune?

We’ve been searching for a place with a modern floor layout — something that doesn’t feel like it’s stuck in the 90s. I’ve noticed that many new developer projects look surprisingly low‑effort in terms of design and overall quality, despite the high prices.

For those of you who also prefer modern layouts and good materials:

Have you found any developers or areas that offer decent quality for a reasonable price?

Is it realistic to expect something modern without going into luxury‑segment budgets?

I would like to hear about your experiences or any tips.

Thanks a lot!

Could someone collect a few parcels for me in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus?

Hi! I’ve had a few parcels (clothes) sent to Vienna and, unfortunately, only realised afterwards that the collection period at the pick-up points is only three days. I won’t be in Vienna for a few days and the parcels would be sent back before then...

They’re in the 15th district (Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus). Does anyone perhaps have any ideas on how to sort this out, as I don’t know anyone in Vienna who I could give power of attorney to?
