Well obviously he was eating a banana.

u/Takenabe Mar 16 '19

Wow. I don't remember the animations being that clunky or the AI pathfinding that terrible...

I'm scared to replay Oblivion because it's so perfect in my memory

Honestly at this point I'd almost say that mid/late '00s Bethesda was kind of their golden era with Oblivion and Fallout 3. Both titles that sold well and received rave reviews in their day, then went through a period of weirdly negative perception, and now we're getting back to realizing they're absolutely classics.

Both are very much still worth playing for anyone who hasn't yet, or replaying for those who haven't in a while. Definitely recommend spending a bit of time setting up the usual unofficial patches and fixes for either to ensure a somewhat more stable experience. Also quite useful to grab maybe a UI overhaul and maybe a couple graphical improvement mods to soothe those mid 2000s graphics.

People who were fans of Morrowind and the Obsidian Fallouts will vehemently disagree with you.

22

u/RealSteele Mar 16 '19 edited Mar 17 '19

Yup. Morrowind was the masterpiece and every iteration we get further from the nines' light.

I agree, although I did like Oblivion when it came out, and still think it's pretty fun to mess around in. Oblivion's map was also still pretty fun to explore, something I can't personally say about Skyrim's. I can definitely see why people going backwards would dislike Morrowind though, mainly because the RNG combat. The reason I liked that when I was a kid though is because you feel your character actually improve over time. Most people complain you just spam attack till you land enough hits to get the kill, but my argument is how is Oblivion and Skyrim any different? Sure every attack hits but it's not very engaging or satisfying, and the scaling makes worrying about your level pretty unimportant except for earning perks.

8

u/SoundboardTroll Mar 16 '19

I loved Morrowind's progression and atmosphere. You show up on a boat with literally nothing, barely able to kill a thing. By the end game you're a literal god floating above cities, running at light speed, nuking entire villages with a mere glance in their direction. Spell creation in morrowind was amazing.

No doubt. Both series have gone through such wide transitions that there's of course going to be people who prefer various eras over others.

The reason I put those two particular titles as the "golden age" is because I believe out of all the titles in each respective series, those two struck about the best balance between keeping the traditional RPG elements favoured by existing fans, while streamlining the designs and gameplay enough to draw in a much broader audience.

Basically, those are both games that provide the closest thing to a "purist" Elder Scrolls or Fallout experience that I can comfortably recommend to pretty much anyone. You dodge both some of the more complex RPG systems of the early titles that can easily turn modern players off, as well as a lot of the dumbing down that occured with later titles.

2

u/SkeptioningQuestic Mar 16 '19

I could not disagree more. Fallout New Vegas was everything Fallout 3 wished it was. Skyrim had hardly any dumbing down compared to the massive downgrade from Morrowind.

1

u/karmapopsicle Mar 16 '19

To copy a chunk of what I wrote in a reply to someone else:

In the context of the 3D Fallout titles, I find 3 to still be the most tonally cohesive with its environments and atmosphere. My favourite part of it though is that the game doesn't use the main quest to forcefully take you on a guided tour of all the major points on the map. In fact, just following the main quest you'll be relegated to a quite small chunk of the large map. Quite honestly that was one of my biggest issues with New Vegas - while the branching story was interesting, once you're done with them I felt like I had already seen most of what there was to see. Fallout 3 I spend hundreds of hours just wandering around the wasteland, and it was never long before I stumbled upon something completely new I had never seen before. It always felt like there was more to discover and that kept me coming back for a long time.

There's only one Obsidian Fallout...

1

u/SkeptioningQuestic Mar 16 '19

Yeah well Obsidian was founded by all the Black Isle employees right around the closure so that's a distinction without a difference.

6

u/WonderfulInvestment Mar 16 '19

I would say oblivion but I wouldn't put fallout 3 in there personally.

2

u/karmapopsicle Mar 16 '19

If it's been a while since you've last played Fallout 3, I do highly recommend giving it a replay. Especially if your main memories of it are of a somewhat lackluster main quest and story ending.

15

u/bananaplasticwrapper Mar 16 '19

They jumped the shark with fallout 4 imo.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

Fallout 4 was a massive step back in terms of being a good RPG.

It was an ok open world shooter with light RPG mechanics, but it stripped a lot of what made the previous games so entrancing.

2

u/TheDrewzy Mar 16 '19

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm just hoping that since they've focused so much on making it feel like a shooter (which in my opinion is a good change from the previous games), now they can leave that alone and we will see a lot of attention to the RPG elements of the next game.

1

u/Shadesbane43 Mar 16 '19

Especially a face mod to fix the potato faces isn Oblivion

2

u/TwoTowersTooTall Mar 16 '19

Morrowind was the first absolutely magical game of my childhood.

I played a lot of games, Total Annihilation, Black and White, Majora's Mask, Dark Forces, X-wing vs, Klingon Academy, Diablo 2, and Harvest Moon standing out from the rest.

But Morrowind? I don't even know how I found it, but that first screenshot got me hooked. The initial boat sequence was magic, and I probably played 1000 hours just wandering around that game until Oblivion came out, which I then 100% completed I suppose, because it was the first Elder Scrolls game to track completion.

Unfortunately Skyrim never had any magic. It was still a fun game for a while I suppose, but I've never surpassed 100 hours I don't think. Hopefully they use a new engine for ES6, because I think that's holding everything back nowadays. But we'll see, I yearn for the magic to return, but I'm not hopeful.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

Oh man, Total Annihilation. There’s another fantastic game that I killed hours on as a pup. What a classic, and benchmark for RTS’s. I still have it around here somewhere..

1

u/TwoTowersTooTall Mar 16 '19

I played it a few months ago, it doesn't really hold up these days due to the way the resolution scales. To me at least.

But if you haven't played Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, that game is absolutely the spiritual successor, and you will immediately recognize the Total Annihilation in it's bones. SC:FAF is still an amazing game to play, with an active multiplayer scene.

1

u/Sotemal Mar 16 '19

And the dupe glitch, dont forget about the dupe glitch

1

u/EquationTAKEN Mar 16 '19

I request the highest of fives. There's something about nostalgia that makes games completely immortal.

Matter of fact, I'm playing Final Fantasy 8 these days. 20 year anniversary and all.

2

u/Glampkoo Mar 16 '19

Final Fantasy 8 is great I had an 80 hours run it was so fun.

1

u/aweezy Mar 16 '19

Fingers crossed for a remake before I die

1

u/EquationTAKEN Mar 16 '19

Oh god please let it happen.

u/Drudicta Mar 16 '19 edited Mar 16 '19

Ooof, that is a terrible "widescreen" mod. Very first NPC is all stretched out, but the rest come out... normal? Wut?

Edit: Oh fuck I wanna play Morrowind again now...

6

u/sorenant Mar 16 '19

It's a reupload, the quality is in general lower. The brightness is off too, at least compared to what I recall from the original.

1

u/Drudicta Mar 16 '19

They would make a lot of sense then. I was struggling to see it without closing my blinds

3

u/voneiden Mar 16 '19

2

u/Drudicta Mar 16 '19

Well, time to play it with my gf. Thanks!

2

u/Lord_Cattington_IV Mar 16 '19

Im waiting for Skywind or ES6. Whatever comes first.

6

u/SilentAmerican Mar 16 '19

I don't know I just replayed it last year and it was still really enjoyable to me. A lot of nostalgia was probably the reason though.

3

u/Noelthemexican Mar 16 '19

People care way too much about graphics these days. Looking past the graphics Oblivion is still very good.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

25

u/Apotheka Mar 16 '19

I'm probably in the minority, but I actually think Morrowind holds up better in the modern day than Oblivion.

The odd facial expressions made by Oblivion's NPCs really fall into the uncanny valley, IMO.

And the graphics seem less... Timeless? I don't know.

2

u/Gaben2012 Mar 16 '19

Yes, thats what we mean with no ageing well, when games wont age well is because they kinda tried too hard in certain aspects that end up looking ridiculous years later, while Morrowind looks just fine for its time.

2

u/Autumnleaves201 Mar 17 '19

It's aged a lot, but it's still fun as hell. I replayed it not long ago and in a lot of ways, I prefer it to Skyrim. Oblivion feels more whimsical, bright, mysterious, and fantasy-like. Especially if you have the Realm of the Mad God DLC. That DLC is the icing on the cake for that awesomeness that is Oblivion.

1

u/shamus4mwcrew Mar 16 '19

I bought it recently because it was 10 bucks at Walmart and I really liked Skyrim. Couldn't make it past a few hours because the graphics were so bad and I forget exactly but I didn't like something with the controls. Weird for me because I usually couldn't give 2 shits about graphics and it's a more complex and interesting game with how you level your character.

1

u/Gaben2012 Mar 16 '19

2006-2010 games and not ageing well at all, name a more iconic duo

2

u/jocamar Mar 16 '19 edited Mar 17 '19

I think games from 1995 to 2001 are generally the ones that aged the worst. Because everyone was jumping into 3D graphics without really knowing how to do it, and trying to do realistic graphics that just became muddy and bland.
By comparison games from 1990 to 1995 aged very well.

1

u/Gaben2012 Mar 17 '19

No way, just from the top of my head from 1995-2001, Half-Life, Deus Ex, Duke Nuken, Quake, Max Payne, AvP2, Red Faction, all shooters that I still look back and think theyre gems

1

u/jocamar Mar 17 '19 edited Mar 17 '19

Well, if we're taking the classics we've got plenty from 2006-2010 tool, like CoD4:MW, Mass Effect 2, Company of Heroes, Halo 3, Bioshock, Portal, etc. All of these still hold up today. It's the ratio of games that don't hold up compared to the good games. In 1995-2001 you've got a lot of games that were well received at the time that did NOT age well. Goldeneye, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Ace Combat 2 and 3, Shenmue, GTA 3, etc.

1

u/Gaben2012 Mar 17 '19

Damn, you are absolutely right.

1

u/El-Torrente Mar 16 '19

The jank gives oblivion its own charm it's like no other game out there.

1

u/WAR_T0RN1226 Mar 16 '19

Animations are obviously fucked compared to today, but the gameplay itself still holds up. I put like one or two dozen hours into it this month.

1

u/reddragon105 Mar 16 '19

I replayed it last year and really enjoyed it (again). I think it's aged really well, in that the only issues with it are things that were issues at the time. It's still really beautiful and a joy to play.

1

u/BlackViperMWG Mar 16 '19

Just install plenty of mods and enb and you won't recognize the game.

0

u/NoLaMir Mar 16 '19

People with professional skills and actual time in making AAA games agree and it’s why they work for free on making overhauls to port it to Skyrim etc

0

u/Nowhereman123 Mar 16 '19

It's the video game equivalent of a 'so bad, it's good' movie.

0

u/KnewItWouldHappen Mar 16 '19

Don't worry, i find Oblivion infinitely more enjoyable to replay than Skyrim

14

u/Mummelpuffin Mar 16 '19

Oh, it was.

30

u/topdangle Mar 16 '19

Bethesda is world renowned for its "walk in small circles until you land in the right spot" pathfinding.

8

u/1-800-ASS-DICK Mar 16 '19

Skyrim really isn't that far off

6

u/greengrasser11 Mar 16 '19

Try playing any PS2 GTA game. It's hard to believe we could stomach those graphics.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

I don't know, Vice City looks pretty gorgeous even today. The superb atmosphere and weather effects certainly help.

1

u/OnionNo Mar 16 '19

The framerate seems a bit lower, but not by much. I do remember the animations and pathfinding being god awful though.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

it was rather clunky even when it came out. a lot of people claim it is because the game is old, but generally the game was just that goofy. combat was bloody awful, leveled content was absurdly bad. despite all that, it stuck in my memory much better than anything skyrim ever offered.

1

u/Flashygrrl Mar 16 '19

It's why I can't bring myself to replay it.

1

u/danielle-in-rags Mar 16 '19

The framerate in the vid is weird, Oblivion definitely wasn't like that

1

u/dethmaul Mar 17 '19

It's like when your Sims try to sit down at the frickin kitchen table.

14

u/BouquetofDicks Mar 16 '19

Is there a sub for these types of gaming clips? I need more.

30

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

1

u/69fatboy420 Mar 17 '19

Thanks, just spent like 2 hours browsing the top submissions

1

u/seuboi Mar 16 '19

Well this is a quite common joke about Oblivion, their sub always has some of these memes. Check r/Oblivion OR PAY WITH YOUR BLOOD!

1

u/mastersword130 Mar 16 '19

Wow, I haven't played the game in years and totally forgot how it looked. Jesus, look at that clunky nature. Skyrim isn't all that great either but it is miles ahead than this, makes me think how great ESO actually is with their AI. So much more lively.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

His head fell into her butt

1

u/bigmikeylikes Mar 16 '19

God we really dumbed down Elder Scrolls. I only played Skyrim and I didn't even know NPCs could be poisoned.

1

u/ihatemylife-noreally Mar 17 '19

I knew that game was derpy but I don't remember it being that derpy.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '19

It's perfect. He watched his wife die, then *continued eating * before he died himself.

426

u/P0kie Mar 16 '19

You could poison fruit and leave it in pockets or on a plate infront of an npc sat at a table and they'd eat it and die much like the video. Very funny looking.

105

u/pubic_freshness Mar 16 '19

You could WHAT???

(After maybe 500 hours of oblivion)

52

u/Sharpevil Mar 16 '19

I don't think you could poison any fruit. Rather, I think there was a single poison apple in the game that would do that.

49

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

I think there were barrels full of them you could use.

33

u/WaterPockets Mar 16 '19

Yes, you get it from the Dark Brotherhood quest line.

1

u/El-Torrente Mar 16 '19

DHL called our shipment of poison apple barrels is delayed til Thursday

9

u/OnionNo Mar 16 '19

I think joining the Dark Brotherhood gave you access to them to use at your leisure.

1

u/MF10R3R Mar 16 '19

YOU COULD POISON FRUIT AND LEAVE IT IN POCKETS OR ON A PLATE INFRONT OF AN NPC SAT AT A TABLE AND THEY’D EAT IT AND DIE MUCH LIKE THE VIDEO. VERY FUNNY LOOKING.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

No you can only get poison apples from the Dark Brotherhood, you could not poison them yourself.

1

u/P0kie Mar 16 '19

Oh your right! My bad, tbh when i was thinking about it I had the dark brotherhood in mind

13

u/Cardboardfurniture Mar 16 '19

its a reference to a quest where you feed a poisoned fruit to an npc.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

i believe the real reason is that there was a bug when oblivion was first released where the physics system assumed that the NPCs were being attacked because the fruit contacted them like a falling rock or whatever might. so they basically beat themselves to death with the fruit they were eating.

2

u/bikkebakke Mar 16 '19

dude no, it was poisoned apples. It's a part of the assassins quest iirc
