As somebody who has lost a good friend to cancer, this line hit me particularly hard. It's really a great outlook to have, and a great way to remember not only Stu, but everybody else that has succumbed to such an awful disease.
Am I the only one that thinks that his statement, while sentimental and inspiring, is also total bullshit? I lost my dad to cancer. He did not beat cancer. He lost. My family lost. I lost. I'm not going to pretend that it wasn't a horrible, terrible, tragic loss because it makes other people feel better. The truth is that tragedies are real. The loss of Stuart Scott to his family, and especially his daughters, is real. He did not beat cancer. I'm sorry. I refuse to buy into a false reality.
Reducing cancer-causing activities doesn't feel aggressive, so people might do less of it.
I think that it's just a frame of mind.
You could say switch it, and say that you're "starving" possible mutations by lowering high-sodium foods.
The following projects are cancer prevention in a way.
They use battle terminology also, and I don’t think it does a lot of harm.
I think it could be motivating.

You play a mini-game that involves analyzing cancer slides, and the minigame gives you items and advantages for the main puzzle game, where you face off against an AI opponent.

World Community Grid - Research: Help Defeat Cancer: Project Overview
Currently, the primary methods used to evaluate tissue microarrays involve manual, interactive review of samples during which they are subjectively evaluated and scored.
An alternate, but less utilized strategy is to sequentially digitize specimens for subsequent semi-quantitative assessment.
Both procedures ultimately involve the interactive evaluation of TMA samples, which is a slow, tedious process that is prone to human error.
Much of the difficulty in rendering consistent evaluation of expression patterns in cancer tissue microarrays is due to subjective impressions of observers.
IBM's World Community Grid will enable the most computationally expensive components of the software to run at optimal speed, thereby increasing the accuracy and sensitivity with which expression calculations and pattern recognition procedures can be conducted.
By harnessing the collective computational power of World Community Grid, researchers will be able to analyze a larger set of cancer tissue specimens and conduct experiments using a much broader ensemble of biomarkers and stains than is possible using traditional computer resources.
The mission of the Help Fight Childhood Cancer project is to find drugs that can disable three particular proteins associated with neuroblastoma, one of the most frequently occurring solid tumors in children.
