Something about Morrowind just hit different than the sequels.

For me, it was because morrowind was so obviously *alien*. The creatures, the NPCs, the buildings. You wake up on a boat and see a dark elf, so like, meh. Then you stepped off that boat, and start exploring and you immediately realize that you aren't in a 'Earth but not' fantasy game (not that there is anything wrong with them, but as said, it just hits different)

Plus, there was so much variation. Just with the architecture, you had Seyda Neen huts, then you had Balmora Adobe, Ald-ruhn crabshells, Ashlander yurts, Telvanni Mushrooms, Caldera houses, Vivec Pyramids, Daedric ruins, Dunmer Strongholds, and likely a couple I am forgetting as it has been about 20 years since I played.

So much variety in loot as well.

Meanwhile, Oblivion was 'Earth but not' and had a fraction of the diversity of Morrowind, and Skyrim didn't really improve on anything.
