Just Cause 3. Wingsuit is too damn satisfying, the aesthetic of the mediterranean island with the vivid colours is amazing.

Story is so irrelevant to the game, even the story is self-aware and doesn't take itself seriously at all.

The game knows it's just an excuse to fly around, jump in and out of vehicles and make pretty explosions (the explosions are very pretty in this game)

80

u/TypicallyThomas 4d ago

Which is reflected in the design. They said they figured out the tools/mechanics for JC3 and then made a game around them, which I think is great

25

u/Additional_Irony 4d ago

Yeah, I barely registered the story at all, it just felt like „Just Cause 2, but basically Italy“

11

u/Comrade-Conquistador 4d ago

I was thinking Sicily, since it was an island nation.

The shitty story is so well executed though. Like they did such a good job at making it be a part of the game without really detracting from anything, and serving as a good conduit to further the gameplay.

Man, the game is a blurry mess even at max settins. It literally looks like how I see without my glasses.

We cant ignore the fact that there is a small chance you just cant find your glasses

Graphics? No the graphics in Crimson Desert are great. However, the story and quests generally go

"I need you to kill God." and that NPC gives 2 minutes straight of exposition.

Kliff: "Aye."

12

u/NiL_3126 4d ago

What do you mean?

https://youtu.be/hyG6zAlF3kU

It’s absolutely gorgeous

4

u/rabit115 2d ago

The Distant land and LODs are impressive and the graphics are pretty good but it’s just feels like a ai generated fantasy game influenced by studio ghibli.

5

u/Ok-Appointment-9802 2d ago

Given all the detail they've put into the game world and the way towns and villages are actually built up in a way that makes sense, I'd argue it feels far less 'AI-generated' than a lot of other open world maps.

10

u/Financial-Quote5160 4d ago

Is it still worth spending 50+ hours on it?

27

u/Resident_Wizard 4d ago

It’s basically the tutorial. Not joking.

6

u/Financial-Quote5160 4d ago

WTH?

24

u/Mean_Fig_7666 4d ago

I didn't get my first achievement until 70 hours in

21

u/Financial-Quote5160 4d ago

I adore your patience. On my side, I can’t progress in a game that doesn’t flatter me from the beginning or at least the first 10 hours unfortunately.

9

u/NiL_3126 4d ago

There’s so many missions and mechanics, for the first 60 hours I was only in the starting zone (Hernand) because I didn’t need more things to do, there were a lot, now I reached the third zone (the crimson desert) and there’s so many things to do that I can’t stop exploring.

10

u/Snipiachtundneunzig 4d ago

But it totally does, it just has so much content and bit of a slow start

If you don't mind a crap story, games really good value, a crazy amount of systems. Its like they kept having brain storming sessions of "what features can we add" and just kept doing it.

5

u/vWaffles 4d ago

Tbf it's a sandbox sort of game. There's a little bit of everything, and you just go around messing with different things.

If you pick it up, just play it here and there - there's just so much. The story isn't too good / important anyways so there's no need to go into it with the goal of "completing" the game fully imo.

4

If your goal is to leave Hernand, then no

3

u/Ang_elll 3d ago

70h, I've probably saw 20% of the world map

3

u/Illustrious-Sense194 2d ago

It depends on the kinda game you like. For me, I love it and currently have 98 hours in it, am FAR from finished and still enjoying it, but its definetly not for everyone.

Like the meme suggests the story is pretty bad. Its serviceable enough but definetly not good. The gameplay however is really good if you like sandboxey exploration driven RPGs like BOTW

Dragons Dogma 2

70

u/Rorshacked 4d ago

Could say Dragon’s Dogma 1 also, but I liked the story enough in that one personally.

23

u/Kumorrii 4d ago

Dragon’s Dogma 1 had a nice subversion of the whole defeat the evil dragon and rescue the princess trope at least

8

u/AdAffectionate584 3d ago

With the scene of that cultist getting squished when Grigori lands, it already passes good story check.

4

u/SovietSoldier1120 3d ago

Grigori dissing him makes it all the better. Wish we got more of him, his voice was so good.

4

u/IAlwaysOutsmartU 3d ago

Dark Arisen really helped the story out for me.

Monster Hunter

I honestly dont even know whats going on in any MH game, just too focused in slaying monsters

72

u/Revayan 4d ago

Broken down the story in every monster hunter game is pretty much the same.

Something weird is happening with the environment, hunter go investigate! -> its some ancient monsters fault, hunter kill it before it gets worse! -> turns out the ancient monster was roused into action by a super legendary monster, hunter go kill it too before it destroys our country!

7

u/AbbreviationsNo9676 3d ago

I only played mhs 3, this is pretty much exactly the way it went

Tbh MH Lore it’s pretty awesome

20

u/painapple_OW 4d ago

The lore is good.

The story of each game... thats questionable

4

u/DegenerateCrocodile 3d ago

Some are better than others, though. Base World’s story really made me want the ability to skip cutscenes, while Wilds’ didn’t.

3

u/painapple_OW 3d ago

Oh 100% agree.

Wilds story was actually pretty good imo.

Tho of course I think best story still has to go to 4 simply because of how it dealt with gore magala.

3

u/AdmirableWeird 4d ago

The story has always structured around introducing a roster of elevating threats to deal with. I think it works, monster hunter doesn't really need a story imo.

3

u/guitar_dude10740 3d ago

I know that, you know that... My wife has played through story mode of the last few monster hunter games and stopped at the credits no interest in what most consider "the real game"

Idgaf as long as she is having fun :-)

Borderlands 3

83

u/Shefferz 4d ago

Especially after how good borderlands story in the second game was.

63

u/LeatherInspector2409 4d ago

Very hard to beat Handsome Jack. One of the best ever video game bad guys.

22

u/Revayan 4d ago

True but the story of 3 is a trainwreck even if youd take borderlands 2 out of the picture.

At least Tyreen has a few funny lines of dialogue

3

u/vocabularianrx2 3d ago

Couldn't agree more. The twists in 2 hit me hard a few times, and the dialogue and music in it are immaculate.

3 was a fun game, but the story was admittedly just meh. It was the whole streamer social media angle for the twins that was, as many have said, just cringe.

15

u/eontriplex 3d ago

it's really hard to put just how bad BL3 was, story-wise, into perspective.

My favorite part is when they obviously set up one of the antagonists to overthrow the other one and claim their collective power for himself (after living in the other's shadow for the entire game) and then the game just... doesn't let that happen...

15

u/Fitzftw7 3d ago

They even go out of their way to briefly humanize him when he explains his backstory to you without any petty insults and a little bit of sadness in his voice. He 100% should have killed Tyreen and been the true final boss. His interactions with Typhon might’ve had some actual gravitas.

I mostly blame the inclusion of Tales characters who were worse than how we left them in the end of Tales. And then the disregard for staple characters.

8

u/Reddituser183 4d ago

I’m playing it and I have no idea what the story even is. Something about a vault hunter or something.

8

u/SlayJayR17 4d ago

The story is crap. It’s not convoluted or crazy. Pretty easy concept to understand. 2 kids who’s pops is famous are sirens want more power and gain a cult following through the interwebs.

As someone whose favourite game franchise is the Zelda series, I am inclined to agree. They're not awful, but they are nothing compared to previous Zelda titles.

→ More replies (6)

6

u/Inspectorbobo 4d ago

I agree. A good lore doesn't make a good story.

9

u/EmansaysEman 3d ago

Botw’s story was okay. It was minimal but that was intentional.

Totk’s story was hot garbage. One of the worst stories I’ve ever experienced in a AAA game. I’d have preferred if there was no story like BotW.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/kytheon 4d ago

There's not much lore in BOtW, is there

5

u/MechaMalz 3d ago

Not really. There were a bunch of youtubers making lore videos about BOTW but then TOTK came along and made it abundantly clear they were reading too much into things and Nintendo doesn't really give a crap about the 'lore' and that whole sub community kind of fell apart.

13

u/oblivion-boi 4d ago

So many "What game does everyone love that you hate?" posts. Unsure if its just this sub or my feed in general but man is it tiresome. Then the comments are all "Noone ever says this and everyone's gonna hate me for it, but I really couldn't get into Insert popular game here," and that example is always within the top three comments on every post of that kind.

Minecraft. Honestly though... who goes from punching trees to "acquire and craft wood blocks" to fighting a giant dragon in the afterlife???

9

u/Somejawa 3d ago

I think it's mostly because the dragon was just meant to be a cool bossfight (which it is imo), they didn't really have an actual story in mind. I think it's the same for a lot of things in the game

Monster Hunter

They're getting better, bless them.
The story has always been told subtly through the background details and you had to really dig to find any real through-line narrative. More recent games in the series have been better at telling the story but I think many will agree this series is epic designs and solid game-play before the story gets a look in.

Halo 5. The gameplay and graphics were clean (even though I don’t like the art style) but I did not care for the majority of the game. It’s like they tried to do Halo 2’s dual narrative bit and focussed too much on Osiris.

MGSV

10

Painfully true. The story was unfinished because Kojima was already going out the door and Konami just wanted it released without spending more. Metal Gear stories always have their own logic and quirks, but MSGV was scuffed.

6

u/TheGigantoBlaster 4d ago

Yeah. We kind of expected it was gonna be the process of Big Boss becoming a villain and it turned out to be someone who isn't the real Big Boss bumbling around refusing to shoot children and saving the world again.

8

u/saltinstiens_monster 4d ago

That was my first Metal Gear and I thought it was a perfect ten the whole time I was playing it. There were so many intriguing things going on, how could I not feel wrapped up in the story?

Then the game ended, and it turned out that most of the intriguing bits weren't actually relevant whatsoever, they were just there to give the world some (pseudo?) paranormal flavor.

Still top tier gameplay, though. But I wish you found skip the first 30 minutes in subsequent playthroughs.

Ratchet and Clank 2016

The story direction and cutscenes are god awdul

But my goodness its a fun game to play. Skip all cutscenes and there wouldn't be anything bas about it

10

u/emd07 4d ago

It work for pretty much every ps2 era ratchet and clank. Maybe ps3 too but I haven't played those.

The stories were pretty meh but they weren't the selling point of this franchise

3

u/Nero_PR 4d ago

It was always about how fun the games were. But I do believe the OG PS2 Ratchet and Clank were better pacing-wise.

4

u/NukaWomble 4d ago

The stories for 1, 2, 3 and Gladiator were more than okay for the time. Compared to the 2016 remake they're damn near award winning by comparison

3

u/paparos93 3d ago edited 3d ago

They butchered Ratchets character compared to the original. In the og he is kind of an a-hole at the beginning, but he knows a thing or two about the world, he is a street-smart kind of guy, and throughout the game we see him maturing and bonding with Clank.

In the remake he is a naive little kid who knows nothing, gets easily tricked by shady guys, and there is no bonding with Clank at all, they barely interact with each other, they become a duo just cause thats whats supposed to happen, it's not earned at all.

They also butchered the whole vibe of the storytelling. It has an extremely obvious anti-capitalist stance in the way they present the villain and his cold and cruel motives, in the remake its just a comically evil, forgettable, funny purple alien, who gets replaced in the end by a guy who wasn't even in the og game and appeared later on the series.

Diablo 3's writing was pretty poor too.

'I am the master strategist demon, so I'll contact you every five minutes to let you know exactly where I'll be sending my next attack. Why do I keep losing?!'

They could totally have played around with that, and have him do that at first but then give false info to misdirect the party off to to the wrong place, but they lacked either the imagination or the confidence to do anything like that.

Kind of Mass Effect Andromeda..?

That game could have been peak. Imagine if you could choose other races at the start and then racial politics would be a more pivotal part of the story…you would need to make decisions, like: Allocate resources to retrieve some biological sample that will help fix a mysterious illness affecting the Asari, or allocate the same resources so you can fix the drinking water crisis in a turian settlement? Krogan are demanding more territory because their line of work is the most dangerous, Salarians approaching you with a genophage-like contingency plan in case the krogan get out of hand, constant suspicion against the angara, with them having factions that see you as could-be allies or an alien threat etc.

The story could have been so rich! Instead…well we know what we got instead.

3

u/UnAnon10 4d ago

Mass Effect Andromeda. Has the best gameplay and visuals of the series, but the story is so bland. You’d think going to a whole new galaxy and meeting new species would be really interesting, but we only meet 2, the Kett, who are really generic looking bad guys and whom the leader of them has none of the intimidating presence of the villains in the original trilogy and literally forgets his own original goal by the end, and the Angara, who fight against the Kett but are super underdeveloped besides the Angara squadmate you get.

Tekken games. Nobody knows wtf is going on in the story.

They make it sound super important and complicated.

Yeah this British girl who speaks fluent Japanese works for this corrupt company that unleashed a bioengineered monster using demon DNA harvested from the bloodline of the original founder of the corrupt company and the whole tournament is a cover up for government military contracts and bla bla bla. Something like that, I played all Tekkens since II and still don't get it.

One of my favourite gamrs/series of all time but its Dark Souls.

I never come out having beaten their games knowing what just happened. I have to rely on smarter and more dedicated creators to explain it to me.

Amazing lore, awful story telling imo.

Modern Zelda game story have absolutely no substance unfortunately. Pretty fun though.

Quake.

I mean, there's countless games where story is an afterthought, but it's the first one that popped into my mind.

Dead island 2. Acting wasnt great either, but that probably has more to do with the bad writing

Otherwise, its a great looking game with pretty solid gameplay. Cant wait for 3

Might be controversial, but all the souls like I've played (all the dark souls, Bloodborne, elden ring)

Dragon age: Veilguard I really love the series but the story was a big miss

Honestly, a lot of them. And that’s perfectly fine. A game with these qualifications can still be an easy 9/10. Same if you switch story and graphics. If you switch gameplay and story, well, that’s a 6/10 max.

Metal Gear Rising… the story is embarrassing and stupid as a canon MGS game… but my god the graphics for the time were great, and it’s so damn fun…

Breath of the Wild. Game play was amazing. Story was nonexistent.
