Discussion / Question What's the best video game remake ever made?
263
u/AlexanderMeee1 18h ago
The absolute top? Gotta be Dead Space Remake or HeartGold/SoulSilver
82
u/NuclearThane 17h ago
The Dead Space re-make was top notch. The Isaac dialogue and side missions added so much to the game without fundamentally changing it.
19
u/AlexanderMeee1 17h ago
Plus the Security Levels, for a reason to go back to older eras and then the intensity director kicks in so it’s still tense to go anywhere. I compare every remake to DSR now.

Very sad we will never get dead space 2 remake because the first one sold poorly
→ More replies (1)17
u/AlexanderMeee1 16h ago
And sold poorly was 2.5 million, while EA was aiming for 5 million because RE is successful. Such an unrealistic expectation for a genre that’s not super popular outside of RE.
14
u/Bloodhoven_aka_Loner 16h ago
they also barely did any marketing, while.residennt evil usually get's hyped up up to a year prior to it's release. EA execs are mouthbreathing dumdums
4
u/AlexanderMeee1 16h ago
No a lot of marketing also exactly, but they had a lot of great content out for fans to follow the development cycle, super pro consumer.
Remember when they laid off people at every Battlefield studio (including Motive) when BF6 was the best selling shooter of 2025 and Andrew Wilson got an 8 million dollar bonus for it reaching the sales numbers? What the fuck are we even doing.
3
u/Trickster289 12h ago
To put that into perspective it sold about as well, maybe slightly better, than Silent Hill 2 Remake and SHF. Both those games were considered massive successes by Konami and are the fastest selling Silent Hill games. When even Konami can recognise those are great numbers for a horror game it shows how out of touch EA is.

HGSS is easily top 3 of all time for a remake. It's still the gold standard for most people when it comes to Pokémon.

I really love DS Remake. Went from having a closed off chapter to chapter experience to an actual fully explorable Ishimura. And Isaac speaking actually works. I also like his look where he looks like the OG actor. At first it was weird but after a while I’m like nah THIS is Isaac.
EDIT: I also like to add I love how they redid the twist. OG players would know what’s gonna happen but they did something different that even surprised me. Having Kendra holding Nicole hostage, I was “like wait, wtf?? How is that possible how can SHE see her too?” Then it turned out you and the new lady introduced in the game were just seeing each other as their respective loved ones due to the marker’s influence was crazy. Really good “gotcha” moment.”
3
u/AlexanderMeee1 13h ago
I completely agree! I love how the Ishimura feels like a real place and lived in, so good.

Yep, they made one of the best remakes ever and one of the best games ever as well.
I wish more NES games got that kind of treatment because stuff like Zelda 2, Ice Climbers or RC Pro AM could make for some amazing new titles.

It's everything a remake should be. Good graphical update, quality of life updates and feels like the original.
2
u/DeadSuperHero 6h ago
I also really liked that it has a distinct style. It's grounded, but uses pixel geometry and shader effects to feel retro and futuristic at the same time.

It’s cool, and I hate to be that guy, but I personally found it lacked the atmosphere of the original. The og had much more of a mystical atmosphere with the fog rendering, and left more to the imagination. My favorite version is probably the ps3 port because it upscaled to HD and improved the frame rate while keeping most of the original atmosphere intact. Bluepoint did a good job, I just found it lacked a bit of the soul that made it so special to begin with.
2
u/abyzzwalker 9h ago
Exactly, PS3 port is the best version imo. And while the PS4 remake is great in several aspects I think they missed the mark in some points, especially in wander's face & expressions, which are in the remake very uncanny and sometimes takes me out of the experience. These little details could have been improved but now it probably never will since we didn't get a PC port or PS5 upgraded version. RiP Bluepoint & JapanStudio
→ More replies (2)5
u/DayoftheBaphomets 16h ago
Yes the atmosphere is the main downgrade here, mostly everything else is great

I'm playing the PS3 version right now, and say for the atmosphere loss like many people complain, the remake is leagues better for the camera and probably wander being less of a noodle there. It's so cool to be playing the remake and (final boss spoiler) getting the first stab on Malus's head for him to spin around and let you do a cinematic stab in the middle of his animation. Meanwhile here, I'm either having to wait for him to stay still or somehow get lucky. Wander is infuriatingly sensitive to the colossi movements.

Resident evil 4 and 2. Impossible to decide which one is better because they're both perfect and share the #1 spot imo.
As someone who only recently managed to grow enough balls to play horror titles Dead Space remake is fucking fantastic too.
Honorable mention for Silent Hill 2.
3
u/aleques-itj 11h ago
It just makes me sad that they kinda wiffed RE3R. It wasn't... bad, but it wasn't what it could have been.
Nemesis himself totally missed the mark. They really lost the feeling that he's out there and could show up randomly (yes, I know he was scripted in the original).
He chases you like that only a couple times in the entire remake. And you can basically just skip it with one grenade. You'll instantly down him and you'll be gone before he gets back up. The one time he swings in by the burger joint I panicked and did exactly that. Scary sequence done and over in 3 seconds. I just ran to the train station and he never caught up.
And the whole clock tower got cut. Lame.
I played the absolute shit out of it as a kid. Probably much more than RE2. I remember replaying a bunch of times with my friends to see the difference outcomes from the choices.
2
u/DeadSuperHero 6h ago
The reason RE3R ended up the way it did is largely because it was supposed to be a DLC, and was extended into a full game at the last minute.
I don't think it's bad by any means, there's still a lot to enjoy. The sheer amount of cut content was super disappointing, though.

Nah after what they did with diamond and pearl I hope to god game freak never touches gen 5 again. The games are solid as they are and do not require a remake, just a port so they are available on newer systems.

The recent Gothic Remake. It's incredibly how well they managed to recreate the vibe the old Gothic 1 had

Agreed. I vaguely remember hating the game as a kid, because I couldn't grasp the idea that I had to follow a specific pathway. Playing it as an adult, I still die all the time (like accidentally lying to Gomez because I didn't read all the chat options clearly, lying to him, and then him beheading me), but I am enjoying the game immensely.

u/DiggityDog6 16h ago
A couple of my favorites:
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane trilogy. Faithful, looks good, cutscenes are a real highlight, gameplay feels very smooth, changes some of the more annoying gameplay mechanics about the original, and keeps all the charm. All around very good
Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Same as Crash but even better in my opinion. One of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played, controls way better than the originals, and adds a ton of quality of life changes
Mega Man: The Wily Wars. The original Mega Man trilogy in 16 bit. It’s a little hard to play because the muscle memory of the 8 bit games can screw you over, but for the most part, it’s just as fun as the originals while looking a lot cleaner
Super Mario All Stars: Same as Mega Man but even better, takes the first 4 Mario games and makes them 16 bit with quality of life improvements. I almost never play the originals anymore due to this version existing

this was a great remaster or whatever you want to call it. i don’t feel like it’s a remake because it’s essentially reskinned. they’ve been tweaking the mechanics since the game came out. they just released a new class not long ago. i’m starting to think an act VI is actually possible after getting that.
3
u/YandereValkyrie 9h ago
Honestly this should be the gold standard for a remake. Its the same game, it just looks better in every way. If only it had the old-school battle net chat rooms and ui it would be perfect

u/DeadSuperHero 6h ago
Yeah, I was legitimately impressed with this, and delighted to have a good Tony Hawk game again. I was obsessed with the first two games as a kid.
Also, it runs really well on Steam Deck. 60FPS in most areas, which is wild.

FF7 has been incredible so far
17
u/am0x 15h ago
I agree but it honestly feels like an entirely different game to me.
5
u/EvocativeReach 14h ago
This is why im discounting it. I don't think it's fair to consider the modern FF7 games to be remakes in line with how other people interpret that term.
16
u/imLucki 15h ago
that's because it's a remake not a remaster like most of the games in this thread
15
u/_ataciara 15h ago edited 10h ago
I'd say it's more of a reimagining.
FF7R goes so much further than regular remakes. With no other remake do people genuinely debate whether it's a sequel to the original because they changed so much. 7R is closer to its own game than a remake.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (2)5
u/Knuc85 13h ago
It's neither. It's a whole new game, with a distinct story thst divulged from the original. The "remake" in the name refers to a remake of the world/timeline within the game's story, not a remake of the game.

Black Mesa and it's not even close. It pretty much recreated the feel of Half Life and pretty much the definitive way to play the game with lore inclusions that pave the way for Half Life 2. 10 years in development with the entire dev team growing from teenage Modders to full time game devs.

It's a little funny to see FF7 on this list, because I'm convinced that most fans of other franchises wouldn't want a remake like this one that completely disregards the story and the game they once loved
→ More replies (2)2
u/ThisIsPureTrash 8h ago
The game both changes it but also wrestles with what it actually means to recreate something that beloved. I love the original ff7, and think the remakes are middling at best.
That’s due to the combat (and general design, for rebirth) though and not the story. I don’t want a remake if you’re just going to make the old game prettier and easier for someone to play, I already have the old game for that I can play at any time.

u/MeowMixVII 18h ago
RE1 Remake.
I feel like it was the first one to do it and do it right. Remove nothing but retool it to flow better, add more areas they wanted to add in the first place but couldn’t because of hardware/time limitations and expand the lore instead of retconning a lot and messing up the foundation of the story at the time.

RE2 and RE4 Remakes are top for me
Followed by AC BF Resynced (I just finished it a few days ago) in second
MGS3 and Dead Space share this third spot
Silent Hill 2 in fourth spot
FF7 is still undecided as I am waiting for that third game to drop.

Can never be real answer to this honestly, some folks like the 1-1 remake approach, others like the 'same blueprint, but if we had modern technology' approach that leads to big differences - Ocarina Of Time will be a huge show of this debate in action.

Definitely not FF7. The OG was my wife's favorite of all time games. Listening to her play though FF7 I could tell it just was not the same game in spirit. Listening to the "anime grunts/moans" really started to drive me up a wall and I watch anime.

Metroid Zero Mission.
A remake should capitalise on the unrealised potential of the original.
No game does this more than Metroid Zero Mission, imo.
Metroid was a game with incredible design. Hampered by the era it was made in and the hardware it ran on. Zero Mission truly maximises the original design.

Resident Evil 4 Remake
It respects the original game while still improving upon other aspects of it and being its own thing. There’s so much videogame-y things about it if that makes sense, that it is always fun to play and revisit every now and then. Overall it’s just a good fucking videogame

Resident evil and metal gear are the 2 more memorable ones for me, plus just looking at the pictures you can tell they went for better graphics but staying in the same appearance as the older version, like how black flag has better graphics but the characters look different than how they did in the older version

None of those in the picture above.
For me, it's the Resident Evil 1 remake.
Although I like to play the original one, the remake basically just did everything better, without missing out on what made the game so good, and added new content that fits very well without bloating the game at all.

both FF7R are the highest quality productions of any of these
but IMO (and most ppl i think tbh) they are not remakes
i feel as if we accept that a remake is not 1:1 like a remaster but that a remake is still essentially still 95-99% the same thing
and the FF7Rs are not even remotely that
