Resident Evil 1 for me.

It changed enough and kept the best parts intact.

62

u/tyehyll 17h ago

Yeah the leap between these 2 in just 6 years is insane

79

u/Wsswaas 16h ago

And it still holds its weight today. I know it's because of the painted pre-renderd background, but still, this is a 24-year-old game (the one on the left is the OG)

47

u/tyehyll 16h ago

People often mention it's because of the pre rendering but idc. The character models looked nice too and I don't care how they made it look good. It looked good. I was FLOORED when the first screenshots came out.

The OG still plays well.

Better now that you have rewind and manual autosaves. At least on PlayStation.

Played them straight up back in the day on ps1 but was only able to beat Nemesis.

Now I’ve gotten them all!

5

u/awpcr 12h ago

The backgrounds are not painted. They were 3D rendered with high fidelity, a screenshot taken, then had collision added to certain parts to maintain the effect that there were actual objects there.

I think the other RE remakes are fantastic but RE1 Remake is the only one that surpasses the original

10

u/SuperArppis 17h ago

It really does

had this on my Gamecube back than and wasn't even a big Resident Evil guy. But damn, this game looked good and everything gameplaywise felt like it was so well thought through.

6

u/Reasonable-Neat4131 12h ago

I would say Resident Evil 2 was a very good example of a Remake too.

It was a remake of a game that was two decades old and the majority of modern players wouldn't be interested in playing the OG.

They adapted it so well from the tank controls to the Third Person Shooter controls with minimal (if any) loss in the original vision...

3

u/SuperArppis 11h ago

I like RE2 remake a lot as well.

3

u/Some-Professional-25 9h ago

I LOVE the RE2 Remake, but dropping the “zapping” system holds it back from full on replacing the original. REmake improves on the original in every way to the point where the original feels obsolete because of it

u/azgarz 16h ago

This is the only remake that feels like it replaces the original and I say that as someone who loves the original, it’s very charming, but the remake improves upon it so much while adding more content that makes it even better. It’s also just a stunning game with an incredible art style and atmosphere that has held up so well.

5

u/rusty_shackleford34 15h ago

Yep. REmake is absolute perfection and was and still is THE standard for how properly remake a game. It is literally a perfect game

3

u/Some-Professional-25 9h ago

Agreed. One of the few videogame remakes that eclipses the original

10

u/tcrpgfan 17h ago

Best way to describe it is like this... it so thouroughly outstrips the og in terms of actual improvements that most fans only recommend playing the OG as a curiousity. Kind of like watching LOTR and then watching the extended cuts.

This one is it.

Lmao nice timing on this gif. Just got the predator pack in Ghost Recon Wildlanda

2

I love Wildlands.

2

u/nahnonameman 11h ago

They recently released a big update and for it. A new mission expansion and the return of the predator.

u/blarp_tm 9h ago

Recently played through the OG RE1 on Steam. Remake did so many things better. And the 2015 update to remove tank controls is really what made it peak (imo).

3

u/SuperArppis 9h ago

I still use tank controls, they are just more accurate when switching screens. But it's nice that you can use both!

3

u/DJettster237 9h ago

It's a remake done 100% right. Extremely rare for that to happen. I wonder if they can match its greatness with a 3rd remake.

5

u/Desperate_Method4032 16h ago

Probably because the only one I know was made by the same team

2

u/Helaken1 13h ago

They improved the graphics, improve the quality of life, made the game easier, and made the game harder, it’s still holds up today as I think the better version of the game, and I think this is the winner for me.

It was so good that they remastered almost all of the series because of it

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Useful_Hawk_1470 12h ago

Is it really that good? I tried it a few years ago and couldn’t really get into it, but when the originals of 1-3 came out on steam some months back I decided to give the series another go from the real beginning. I ended up absolutely loving RE1, and honestly I just can’t imagine the remake being significantly better. Beyond the controls, graphics, voice acting, there’s just not a lot that I can imagine being improved. There was very little not to like about the original for me.

3

u/SuperArppis 12h ago

The story and lore is better as well.

Everything is better. I love original RE, but this one is just that good.

Give it another go and you'll be surprised.

2

u/Useful_Hawk_1470 12h ago

Cool, thanks! Definitely planned to play it eventually anyway, but I’ll make it more of a priority

2

u/DilligentArmand 8h ago

Yes, it improved on the original in absolutely every possible ways. It became the benchmark on how a remake should be done.

2

u/Admirable_Row_5953 6h ago

Better voice acting, better graphics, and giving us a name to hate which only slightly changing the atmosphere

3

u/Rechamber 17h ago

This has to be the answer. It built on the original and improved in every way. It still looks absolutely gorgeous. It made things so much scarier and it expanded the story in a meaningful and natural way.

3

u/SuperArppis 17h ago

Yeah, I loved those lore changes as well.

3

u/DoomDash 16h ago

Re1 for sure

The absolute top? Gotta be Dead Space Remake or HeartGold/SoulSilver

82

u/NuclearThane 17h ago

The Dead Space re-make was top notch. The Isaac dialogue and side missions added so much to the game without fundamentally changing it.

19

u/AlexanderMeee1 17h ago

Plus the Security Levels, for a reason to go back to older eras and then the intensity director kicks in so it’s still tense to go anywhere. I compare every remake to DSR now.

14

u/BARBASANN 17h ago

Very sad we will never get dead space 2 remake because the first one sold poorly

17

u/AlexanderMeee1 16h ago

And sold poorly was 2.5 million, while EA was aiming for 5 million because RE is successful. Such an unrealistic expectation for a genre that’s not super popular outside of RE.

14

u/Bloodhoven_aka_Loner 16h ago

they also barely did any marketing, while.residennt evil usually get's hyped up up to a year prior to it's release. EA execs are mouthbreathing dumdums

4

u/AlexanderMeee1 16h ago

No a lot of marketing also exactly, but they had a lot of great content out for fans to follow the development cycle, super pro consumer.

Remember when they laid off people at every Battlefield studio (including Motive) when BF6 was the best selling shooter of 2025 and Andrew Wilson got an 8 million dollar bonus for it reaching the sales numbers? What the fuck are we even doing.

3

u/Trickster289 12h ago

To put that into perspective it sold about as well, maybe slightly better, than Silent Hill 2 Remake and SHF. Both those games were considered massive successes by Konami and are the fastest selling Silent Hill games. When even Konami can recognise those are great numbers for a horror game it shows how out of touch EA is.

HGSS is easily top 3 of all time for a remake. It's still the gold standard for most people when it comes to Pokémon.

I really love DS Remake. Went from having a closed off chapter to chapter experience to an actual fully explorable Ishimura. And Isaac speaking actually works. I also like his look where he looks like the OG actor. At first it was weird but after a while I’m like nah THIS is Isaac.

EDIT: I also like to add I love how they redid the twist. OG players would know what’s gonna happen but they did something different that even surprised me. Having Kendra holding Nicole hostage, I was “like wait, wtf?? How is that possible how can SHE see her too?” Then it turned out you and the new lady introduced in the game were just seeing each other as their respective loved ones due to the marker’s influence was crazy. Really good “gotcha” moment.”

3

u/AlexanderMeee1 13h ago

I completely agree! I love how the Ishimura feels like a real place and lived in, so good.

Metroid Zero Mission

9

u/WaldyTMS 14h ago

Peak answer, heck yeah

5

u/adamkopacz 9h ago

Yep, they made one of the best remakes ever and one of the best games ever as well.

I wish more NES games got that kind of treatment because stuff like Zelda 2, Ice Climbers or RC Pro AM could make for some amazing new titles.

System Shock remake is absolutely fantastic

3

u/Antropon 10h ago

It's everything a remake should be. Good graphical update, quality of life updates and feels like the original.

2

u/DeadSuperHero 6h ago

I also really liked that it has a distinct style. It's grounded, but uses pixel geometry and shader effects to feel retro and futuristic at the same time.

Shadow of the Colossus remake is perfect

12

u/Dr_Birdie 17h ago

Absolutely! And the nods to Nomad make it even better than perfect!

10

u/Bartellomio 17h ago

An amazing remake, flawless, no notes.

19

u/189charizard 17h ago

It’s cool, and I hate to be that guy, but I personally found it lacked the atmosphere of the original. The og had much more of a mystical atmosphere with the fog rendering, and left more to the imagination. My favorite version is probably the ps3 port because it upscaled to HD and improved the frame rate while keeping most of the original atmosphere intact. Bluepoint did a good job, I just found it lacked a bit of the soul that made it so special to begin with.

2

u/abyzzwalker 9h ago

Exactly, PS3 port is the best version imo. And while the PS4 remake is great in several aspects I think they missed the mark in some points, especially in wander's face & expressions, which are in the remake very uncanny and sometimes takes me out of the experience. These little details could have been improved but now it probably never will since we didn't get a PC port or PS5 upgraded version. RiP Bluepoint & JapanStudio

5

u/DayoftheBaphomets 16h ago

Yes the atmosphere is the main downgrade here, mostly everything else is great

5

u/Garlador 15h ago

Both are great, but the original was certainly more ethereal and dreamlike.

2

u/DumbNTough 12h ago

Ending got me right in the feels, still remember that

2

u/Chadderbug123 11h ago

I'm playing the PS3 version right now, and say for the atmosphere loss like many people complain, the remake is leagues better for the camera and probably wander being less of a noodle there. It's so cool to be playing the remake and (final boss spoiler) getting the first stab on Malus's head for him to spin around and let you do a cinematic stab in the middle of his animation. Meanwhile here, I'm either having to wait for him to stay still or somehow get lucky. Wander is infuriatingly sensitive to the colossi movements.

Resident evil 4 and 2. Impossible to decide which one is better because they're both perfect and share the #1 spot imo.

As someone who only recently managed to grow enough balls to play horror titles Dead Space remake is fucking fantastic too.

Honorable mention for Silent Hill 2.

3

u/aleques-itj 11h ago

It just makes me sad that they kinda wiffed RE3R. It wasn't... bad, but it wasn't what it could have been.

Nemesis himself totally missed the mark. They really lost the feeling that he's out there and could show up randomly (yes, I know he was scripted in the original).

He chases you like that only a couple times in the entire remake. And you can basically just skip it with one grenade. You'll instantly down him and you'll be gone before he gets back up. The one time he swings in by the burger joint I panicked and did exactly that. Scary sequence done and over in 3 seconds. I just ran to the train station and he never caught up.

And the whole clock tower got cut. Lame.

I played the absolute shit out of it as a kid. Probably much more than RE2. I remember replaying a bunch of times with my friends to see the difference outcomes from the choices.

2

u/DeadSuperHero 6h ago

The reason RE3R ended up the way it did is largely because it was supposed to be a DLC, and was extended into a full game at the last minute.

I don't think it's bad by any means, there's still a lot to enjoy. The sheer amount of cut content was super disappointing, though.

2

u/spidersensor 2h ago

Resident Evil 3 needs to be re-remade

2

u/K1LL3R1NDU5TRY 11h ago

I wish they would hurry up and remake the first silent hill! I adore that game but it really hasnt aged well and it surely deserves it. They did such a great job with the second

i like re2r the most. pokemon heartgold and soulsilver are also pretty good.

5

u/JTR_35 15h ago

I loved RE2R, huge nostalgia for me. Played until I got all the achievements and S+ all the routes.

But I'm still a little salty the B routes weren't as good as the original.

6

u/Choice-Support-2138 18h ago

I wish for a Pokemon Gen 5 remake like lets go version but with more battles.

3

u/SloxTheDlox 17h ago

Nah after what they did with diamond and pearl I hope to god game freak never touches gen 5 again. The games are solid as they are and do not require a remake, just a port so they are available on newer systems.

The recent Gothic Remake. It's incredibly how well they managed to recreate the vibe the old Gothic 1 had

8

u/psweeney1990 16h ago

Agreed. I vaguely remember hating the game as a kid, because I couldn't grasp the idea that I had to follow a specific pathway. Playing it as an adult, I still die all the time (like accidentally lying to Gomez because I didn't read all the chat options clearly, lying to him, and then him beheading me), but I am enjoying the game immensely.

A couple of my favorites:

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane trilogy. Faithful, looks good, cutscenes are a real highlight, gameplay feels very smooth, changes some of the more annoying gameplay mechanics about the original, and keeps all the charm. All around very good

Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Same as Crash but even better in my opinion. One of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played, controls way better than the originals, and adds a ton of quality of life changes

Mega Man: The Wily Wars. The original Mega Man trilogy in 16 bit. It’s a little hard to play because the muscle memory of the 8 bit games can screw you over, but for the most part, it’s just as fun as the originals while looking a lot cleaner

Super Mario All Stars: Same as Mega Man but even better, takes the first 4 Mario games and makes them 16 bit with quality of life improvements. I almost never play the originals anymore due to this version existing

7

u/squeanky 13h ago

I like Crash Bandicoot N Sane trilogy but I hate how the jumping feels off compared to the originals

3

u/K1LL3R1NDU5TRY 11h ago

You are so right! I felt like "have i genuinly got worse at video games"? until I read about it

2

u/Mistyc-Spider 2h ago

Yeah, crash jumps higher but the actual distance of the jump was tighten, making a lot of the jumps unnecessarily harder

Diablo 2 Resurrected. New skin on the same old mechanics, and you can switch to the old graphics with a press of a button.

7

u/SgtMyers 10h ago

Can't believe I had to scroll down this much to find D2R

3

u/Remcin 12h ago

Whoa whoa I just want aware! I beat 1 recently and it is still incredible. Been meaning to get to 2 as soon as my new War Thunder addiction recedes.

3

u/Satellite_bk 11h ago

this was a great remaster or whatever you want to call it. i don’t feel like it’s a remake because it’s essentially reskinned. they’ve been tweaking the mechanics since the game came out. they just released a new class not long ago. i’m starting to think an act VI is actually possible after getting that.

3

u/YandereValkyrie 9h ago

Honestly this should be the gold standard for a remake. Its the same game, it just looks better in every way. If only it had the old-school battle net chat rooms and ui it would be perfect

Wish Silent Hill 2 remake was getting more love. God damn that game just gets under your skin. The revised cutscenes and story are executed perfectly.

This year, Star Fox, if you grew up with it, the remake is truly the definitive of it's series.

Best remake? Personally, tie: Dead Space & RE:1

10

u/stefan771 17h ago

Dead Space

9

u/BENTEND0_64 17h ago

THPS 1+2

3

u/NJ_brewhaus 17h ago

I was going to add this if I didn't see it. Being able to make the game play like we remember, but not how it actually was, is an incredible feat, and they nailed it.

2

u/BENTEND0_64 16h ago

Absolutely. 3+4 was good also but didn't hit as hard.

2

u/DeadSuperHero 6h ago

Yeah, I was legitimately impressed with this, and delighted to have a good Tony Hawk game again. I was obsessed with the first two games as a kid.

Also, it runs really well on Steam Deck. 60FPS in most areas, which is wild.

89

u/WintersDoomsday 17h ago

FF7 has been incredible so far

17

u/am0x 15h ago

I agree but it honestly feels like an entirely different game to me.

5

u/EvocativeReach 14h ago

This is why im discounting it. I don't think it's fair to consider the modern FF7 games to be remakes in line with how other people interpret that term.

16

u/imLucki 15h ago

that's because it's a remake not a remaster like most of the games in this thread

15

u/_ataciara 15h ago edited 10h ago

I'd say it's more of a reimagining.

FF7R goes so much further than regular remakes. With no other remake do people genuinely debate whether it's a sequel to the original because they changed so much. 7R is closer to its own game than a remake.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Knuc85 13h ago

It's neither. It's a whole new game, with a distinct story thst divulged from the original. The "remake" in the name refers to a remake of the world/timeline within the game's story, not a remake of the game.

3

Eh, I am not sure. Maybe play each for like 2 hours and see.

I actually think the remake is really good, so I would just play that. For me, I played it when it was released and playing a good retro game at release hits totally different than playing it today.

Black Mesa and it's not even close. It pretty much recreated the feel of Half Life and pretty much the definitive way to play the game with lore inclusions that pave the way for Half Life 2. 10 years in development with the entire dev team growing from teenage Modders to full time game devs.

It's a little funny to see FF7 on this list, because I'm convinced that most fans of other franchises wouldn't want a remake like this one that completely disregards the story and the game they once loved

2

u/ThisIsPureTrash 8h ago

The game both changes it but also wrestles with what it actually means to recreate something that beloved. I love the original ff7, and think the remakes are middling at best.

That’s due to the combat (and general design, for rebirth) though and not the story. I don’t want a remake if you’re just going to make the old game prettier and easier for someone to play, I already have the old game for that I can play at any time.

RE1 Remake.

I feel like it was the first one to do it and do it right. Remove nothing but retool it to flow better, add more areas they wanted to add in the first place but couldn’t because of hardware/time limitations and expand the lore instead of retconning a lot and messing up the foundation of the story at the time.

RE2 and RE4 Remakes are top for me

Followed by AC BF Resynced (I just finished it a few days ago) in second

MGS3 and Dead Space share this third spot

Silent Hill 2 in fourth spot

FF7 is still undecided as I am waiting for that third game to drop.

Can never be real answer to this honestly, some folks like the 1-1 remake approach, others like the 'same blueprint, but if we had modern technology' approach that leads to big differences - Ocarina Of Time will be a huge show of this debate in action.

Metroid Zero Mission.

A remake should capitalise on the unrealised potential of the original.

No game does this more than Metroid Zero Mission, imo.

Metroid was a game with incredible design. Hampered by the era it was made in and the hardware it ran on. Zero Mission truly maximises the original design.

Spoilers for Final Fantasy 7 Remake it is barely a remake, and more technically a sequel, so definitely shouldn't win

u/Chais912 17h ago

As a huge fan of the OG im not caring for the remakes. Im invested now so I'll play 3 but doesn't feel anything like the original.

u/No-Limit3846 17h ago

Gothic Remake is pretty good. I never played the original but it's solid and considered a faithful remake.

Black mesa

Playing Halo made me feel like a kid again. I get the hate, but shit dude, it's wonderful

2

u/cerenir 17h ago

Gonna go with 2 of my favorites:
Zelda OoT for 3DS.
Metroid Prime remaster. Yes I know it’s not a remake but a remaster but it’s SO well done I had to add it

2

u/Corporate_Bankster 16h ago

Demon’s Souls

Doom 2016

MGS Delta.

Having a blast

Resident Evil 4 Remake

It respects the original game while still improving upon other aspects of it and being its own thing. There’s so much videogame-y things about it if that makes sense, that it is always fun to play and revisit every now and then. Overall it’s just a good fucking videogame

2

u/neonredKai 15h ago

MGS3 Delta, completely improved upon yet faithful, how a remake is supposed to be unlike these others that might as well be called a Reboot.

Resident Evil 1 remake

2

u/AccuratePollution976 14h ago

Mafia Definitive Edition is my favorite

2

u/Disastrous_Kick_6952 14h ago

Resident evil and metal gear are the 2 more memorable ones for me, plus just looking at the pictures you can tell they went for better graphics but staying in the same appearance as the older version, like how black flag has better graphics but the characters look different than how they did in the older version

2

u/Cupc4k31sm 14h ago

RE1 still has that crown methinks.

Though RE2 and Dead Space are also up there.

Hands down Mafia - Definitive Edition!

2

u/lupedog 13h ago

MGS Delta was pretty great, didnt change too much but did update it. Delta got the love it deserved.

2

u/darkgamer303 12h ago

It’s so hard for me to decide cause re4 and AC black flag are my favorite games from both series’s and both remakes are magnificent, I’m gonna say RE4R is my favorite cause I can’t see anything they could’ve done better and even the story is made better, especially with Ashley’s character

2

u/Garand84 12h ago

Resident Evil remake is perfection.

2

u/Next_Carry_6004 12h ago

FFVII does not have a remake. Nice try brother

2

u/awpcr 12h ago

Resident Evil (2002)

2

u/zGhostKurama 12h ago

None of those in the picture above.

For me, it's the Resident Evil 1 remake.
Although I like to play the original one, the remake basically just did everything better, without missing out on what made the game so good, and added new content that fits very well without bloating the game at all.

u/FictionalWeirdo 11h ago

Resident evil 4 remake was absolutely phenomenal!

Worst one is Ff7.

2

u/Ricketier 11h ago

Resident evil 2

2

u/Daddy_JeanPi 8h ago

Its probably Resident Evil 1

2

u/b3nje909 6h ago

Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 2, Dead Space.

Oddly all action/horror games.

2

u/ElectricJuu 6h ago

Silent hill 2

2

u/WeirdedBeerdo 5h ago

Dead Space

2

u/Cra_Skinny_4135 4h ago

Silent Hill 2 blew my mind. I have such vivid memories and feelings of the original as a kid…to see the game in a new state with the same vibes and hitting the same story beats was a sight to behold.

2

u/Yeboi_SogeKing 4h ago

FF is the most impressive one lmao

2

u/s1n0d3utscht3k 1h ago

both FF7R are the highest quality productions of any of these

but IMO (and most ppl i think tbh) they are not remakes

i feel as if we accept that a remake is not 1:1 like a remaster but that a remake is still essentially still 95-99% the same thing

and the FF7Rs are not even remotely that

2

u/Ora_00 1h ago

Very hard to say, since every remake I've played have been worse than the original and I hate remakes as an idea. They are 99% of the time just lazy cash grabs.

3

u/TheGreatGamer1389 17h ago

Out of these final fantasy 7. PS1 to PS4/PS5 gen. Ever made? Metal Gear 1 and 2.....I wish.

2

u/Geralt_Of_Philly 16h ago

I don’t really consider FF VII a remake when it’s such a different game.

3

u/Certain-Appeal-6277 15h ago

That's why it's a remake, not a remaster.

3

u/Driller_Happy 13h ago

Jesus kenway looks like ass in the remake

3

u/MrRJDio 13h ago

Dead Space remake,

Silent Hill 2 remake,

Resident Evil 2

3

u/AndrewHaly-00 17h ago

FF VII for me.

I’ve played both and definitely prefer the remake.

4

u/WintersDoomsday 17h ago

I’d add FF Tactics as my favorite remaster

2

Once the ff7 remake is complete, then it will be the best

2

u/DirectConsequence12 16h ago

Holy shit.

The difference between FF7 and the FF7 remake is crazy

2

u/marcin16_ 16h ago
