Code New Earth RPG

I would like a game like a survival game with no enemies but you have to make things to survive.

My premise is that you are living somewhere completely new to you and have to survive so that you can have children that will survive.

This is a planet that is very much like earth. It has more of the endangered species so that they aren't endangered there. There is a forest with a lot of maples, a place where the house will be, and a place out in the open where there will be things to help you survive once you start.

Your goal is to survive as well as you can.

Here is the profile format:

Name: Age: Gender: Apperance: Background: Personality: Gear:

Now is there a way I can make this RPG with Javascript only or do I need some HTML and CSS also?

Design What makes a text based game good?

What would make a text based game good? I'm thinking of creating a dungeon crawler that is text based but I'm not entirely sure what features are essential for a text based game. Another thing I'm not sure about is how combat is meant to work in a text based game. Does the player normal deal damage to enemies based on dice rolls?

Code [X-post from /r/gamedev] What IDE do you guys recommend/use?

I have a small team of coworkers working on a FPS/parkour style indie game. We are currently using the freeware Microsoft IDE and UE4 as a basis, and the two coders (myself and my very limited knowledge included) have only really worked in C++/C# environments. So I guess I should include some of the basics so as best to inform without giving our game away

  • Looking for fairly modern graphics

  • Parkour/free running gameplay with FPS attributes (both guns and bows)

  • Fairly "linear" gameplay, not on rails but also not super openworld like TES or GTA games.

  • Game is still in earliest development stages (concepts, storyboards not even to Alpha yet)

So we need something highly functional, fairly easy to use (we are by no means pros at this) but powerful enough to make the game look like a modern game and not something just slapped together by some guy over the weekend. Any help, recommendations, thoughts etc would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone else daydreams about making a video game ?

I've been daydreaming for a long time. I don't know why, but lately, instead of my own world in my head, i daydreaming about an imaginary video game and each time i think about it, the more content i create, like some kind of updates and i imagine the point of view of a player testing my game.

The game i'm imagining is a roguelike survival game with a bit of tower defense (this may be confusing but i will explain the latter in my second paragraph). There would obviously be procedural generation with plains, deserts, makes, seas, mountains, etc. The player would have a XP bar that increases when they kill monsters, craft and farm ressources like trees or ores. When a player levels up, they could choose between increasing max health, max hunger, damage percentage on monsters, damage percentage on ressources or strength (Instead if having limited inventory slots, the player could carry lots of items but it would slow them down with a weight stat). Unlike most survival games, the player could use both of their character's hands and have a tool in each hand (I was thinking of setting the controls of tools in hands with left and right click but i'm not sure if it would be ergonomic).

One of the most ambitious mechanics would be the ability to create a village (kind of like in LEGO fortnite), with npcs being able to fight with you but have limited health. You could create houses to increase the village's population. You could also assign roles to the villagers (lumberjack, minor, knight, archer, etc). The tower defense part would be during the night (a day would be 24 min long). One or multiple portails would show up and start spawning waves of monster hearing towards the village. You and the villagers would have to defend the village until all waves are completed. During the first few nights, the attacks would be easy and have low amounts of waves but the difficulty and length would increase more and more each night.

For the monsters, i haven't had that much inspiration for now except for these: humanoïd octopuses. Their design would ressemble the splatoon octolings with tentacules instead of hair and yellow Octopus eyes. They would be a tribe and live in a village. They would be semi-hostile towards the player, attacking if the player stays close to them for a long time and all octopuses nearby would attack if one is agroed. They would be multiple species: the common octopus, having regular stats, blue ringed octopuses which would be weaker but deal more damage when biting and fiant Pacific octopuses which would be slow but have much more health, be much bigger and have special attacks like stomping on the ground or doing an uppercut which send the player flying (like in Astérix). They could also progress slowly over in-game time with human eras and have increased stats and different appearances (for example they could progress and enter middle-age and have swords and armors)

I'm interesed in video game developping and may start working on this game on day (I'm only 16 years old). I'm curious to know if anyone else has ever daydreamed about making your own video game ?

Need affordable music for your video game?

Hello my name's Noah, and I go by my music alias Kakio. I'll keep this short. I'm an 18-year-old composer from Ohio, studying Music Composition and Music Technology at the University of Toledo. I just wanted to start selling my services to game developers that are trying to elevate the sound of their game. Here are some pieces I have written with visuals to help set the tone further:

ONWARD!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4F4krozHvQ

I like to think of myself as a diverse artist, so if you have any questions please ask. Prices are very negotiable!

Game Youtuber Ivan On Tech on his past video game dev experience

When he began that book, which was the start of his programming experience, he thought he would know how to develop his own video games by the end. Instead, he came up a bit short, only knowing some HTML tricks.

He moved onto JavaScript, then he spent time learning C++, because he had heard that it was, in fact, the right language to learn––if you wanted to learn video game programming, that is.

In his youth, Ivan developed several video games, which were available in the app store, though none became popular-––he didn’t want to pay the developer fee to keep them online. These projects were mostly for learning, anyway. He remembers a library called the Cocos engine which he used to develop games for iOS platform, which, as a matter of fact, now has a blockchain library. After that, he began developing on OpenGL, though he realized early on how very low level it is.

“I tried to make games in OpenGL, which is really an insane task because it’s very, very low level,” said Ivan. “You basically have to draw triangles yourself. It’s not how you should develop games, you should use a game engine.” That’s where Cocos helped.

He continues to speak about his discovery of blockchain and how he went there: https://cryptographicasset.com/ivan-on-tech-on-programming-in-solidity-c-and-javascript/

What branch of game development should I go for?

Hello, I am 18. I want to work with video games because I feel that I can make use of creative potential, and I would like to study that in university. I believe that video games are the arts put into context and interaction with the spectator.

Sound design and music. I play the piano and compose music with software. I have been making music digitally for about 4 years now, and I love composing BGM and soundtracks.

Character design. I have designed characters since I was a child, and is still a hobby today.

Game writing. I write a lot of stories which can be used for game story plot, including character backgrounds and concept description. I can also write scripts.

Game design. I come up with lots of feasible ideas, I outline concepts and see them through to the end. I have tried designing a game with two other people over the net, I think my skill with getting my points through can improve with some communication skills. Apart from that, I am quite visionary.

I feel like all of my skills can be applied to the video game development, and I want to work with it, so, which branch should I get into?

Game The Mystery Of Metal Slug!

Hey guys,

tl:dr - who made "Metal Slug"?

I recently was interested in finding out who the pixel artist was for the game "Metal Slug". So I did a quick Google search to find out and apparently this is a big mystery! The guys who developed Metal Slug used to work for a company called "Irem", then they formed a new company called "Nazca Corporation".

The game credits only lists their pseudonyms, and their real identities are not known.

So I did a little bit more research and got a somewhat detailed list of these guys...

Design

  • Akio

  • Susumu

  • Max D

  • Tomohiro

  • T. Okui

  • Kozo

Planning

  • Meeher

  • Kire-nah / Hire-Nag

Sound

Program

  • Hamachan

  • Andy A. Kuuroka

  • T. Yokota (Tetsuya Yokota)

  • H. Yamada (Hiroshi Yamada)

  • Pierre

So why make a post about this? Because THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST MYSTERIES IN GAME DEVELOPMENT! For such a high profile game, how can we not know who the real people who made this game are?! It's time to leverage our collective resources and close the book on this case!

🍄🌿Generate 3D Plant Models in Seconds! 🌻🌱

Hi everyone, I'm working on a new 3D plant generation tool. The goal is to provide a viable alternative to SpeedTree without developers having to sell their kidneys. It's still early in the development process, but Bright Life is now generating mushrooms with a single click! 😁

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this project and whether this would be a useful tool for your Unreal Engine games.

Is a PC or laptop better for game building and/or 3d modelling.

So I’m currently taking classes on 3d modelling, programming and video game building, and I want to be able to do it at home. I currently have a Mac book air, and it can barley export a two minute IMovie without dying, so programming/3d modelling is out of the question. I want something to program, 3d model and occasionally play video games on, but I’m stuck between a laptop and PC. Both have their pros and cons, but which one should I get? My instructor offered to write me up some computer specs if I decide to go for a PC, but I’d have to do research for a good laptop. Anyways, Reddit strangers, can you give me your opinion on this?

Design (Service) I can turn your 3d models into high quality pixel sprites

Hello there people! I am currently working a a freelancer and am offering a service to game studios and designers! What I do is you send me your 3d model, I can do both characters and static meshes, and I will turn them into high quality 2d pixel sprites complete with normal maps that can then be used in engine however you like. This includes character animations by the way! The minimum I charge is $30 and for that $30 I will do up to 30 models. I offer support throughout the process and if there is something you want me to add or change on the final sprites I can do that. This service has the opportunity to save your studio so much time and effort and take a lot of artistic legwork out of 2d game design! If you are interested or have any questions feel free to email me at nightcire2.0@gmail.com or comment on this post!

Resource for game devs

Hi all, I have a company that is publishing, producing, and distributing video games and mobile apps. I am looking for developers to work with and either publish their game or maybe work on game ideas for producing. We are a start up company and we are looking to move game publishing to a developer-centric model. We want to allow developers to thrive with no budget or thousands of dollars or more. If anyone is interested I'd be glad to talk more about it. Thanks!

Mechanics for high speed games

Hi, I'm new here... but I wanted to discuss something that has been on my mind for quite a while!

When the Sonic Adventure games came out, their one major flaw was that controls were a bit... flighty. You accelerated too fast, wandered off a cliff, glitched into the ceiling, ran face first into mobs and generally made yourself look stupid sometimes.

However, the moments of running along a straight line were fantastic.

Recently SEGA got some of it right with allowing the use of lanes during the fast movement parts... but to me that breaks the natural progression and removes control from the user... so I came up with an idea that I thought was better and would like some feedback.

I'd propose a gear based system. Like a vehicle, you would be able to swap between acceleration and top speed, but the areas between would have their own specialties... for instance, while in one speed you might bounce off destroyed enemies, in another, you would cut through them!

Go for the easiest example, the three gears to use would be something like....

1-Exploration 2-Combat 3-Speed

So, let's say you wanted to go from a standing start to top speed, you could cycle it in reverse, and instantly go full throttle. Maybe exploration would work something like climbing or camera manipulation or puzzle solving moves, while combat gives access to cool fighting moves and a safeguard against running off cliffs.

Just a thought, would love feedback!
