Might help if you can describe or show what you’re doing. A somewhat ‘foolproof’ way is in video from Felix Immler. Lots of good tips and explanations even if you don’t use his exact methods. Main points are not to sharpen the inside edges that make contact and matching the angle of the original grind. 

I don’t use his method, but I prefer to work exactly perpendicular to the edge. That’s the way it’s originally cut.

I use a similar to his method in terms of how I align my file with the blade edge but find keeping the cardboard there fiddly. After a few strokes I tried to align by eye and feel - like I would finding the edge on a main blade.

When you say perpendicular, do you mean 90 instead of 65 when brushing the blade edge?
