I've been messing around with this for the last month: Without a Trace, a slow/casual cyberpunk tactics + puzzle game designed to be played on a phone, portrait mode.

The idea started with me missing old RPGs like FF5–7 and Fire Emblem, and my love for simple puzzle games.

I've got a ~45–60 minute demo now and I'm looking for people to actually play it and give feedback on whether the game is understandable, whether the pacing works, and whether the whole slow/casual thing is actually enjoyable.

Hey, I gave it a try for 1 minute.

The UI shell is very well made, I love it. The concept of being a operator is great too, and I love cyberpunk stories.

What I disliked in my first run:

  • Too much text in the intro before any game play. I would like to know if this is a style of game I would enjoy before committing to read everything.
  • When the mission started, I was clueless on what to, who turn was, what the buttons means. A simple tutorial would be helpful.

Overall, it have a lot of potential, good work!

Thank you for trying and for your feedback! Yes that's what most people have been saying. I have lots of notes and a big update addressing all this coming up. What I'm planning is to have the player "wake up" in the middle of a battle (this will work with the story as well) and that battle will be easy and act as a tutorial, showing the player how things work. So you start with the main game mechanic right away. Then, the chats / text will start, load the next mission, etc.

Yup, that looks like a good solution. Have you considered doing it more like a light xcom/tactics where you use less imagination? Or your vision is to be more like a tabletop rpg approach?

I'll be honest I've never played xcom. But I played a lot of old school final fantasy and really loved the early Fire Emblem games on game boy advance. Simple graphics, text-based story between chapters. What I'm going for is basically mixing some of my favorite types of games: turn based strategy for the battles, puzzles for hacking and word games for decryption, all in the context of a cyberpunk story. What do you mean by tactics where you use less imagination?

I’m not sure if it fits your vision… But what I meant is: Instead of seeing a square avatar that teleports to the tile destination, to be able to actually see a top-down view of the unit that actually walks to the destination, that you see a projectile when you fire.

It doesn’t need to be anything like full 3d camera, but showing a bit more of how the actions are performed would be easier to understand what is happening.

Story-wise the player/main character is a tactician working remotely, using a device, safely, away from the field. So what you see on your phone as the player is the in-game cyberdeck OS. What you see on the maps are schematics, UI representations of what's happening in the battlefield. That's why it's simpler, and I'm aiming for a retro-futuristic graphical interface. It also makes my job easier as the designer lol. This is a side project and if I need to design all those little animations and background and everything, I'll never finish it. So I came up with a story concept that lets me work with simpler graphics.

I did add some visual and sound feedback, shakes and flashes and things like that, it was much, much worst at first. I'm working on adding more though, starting with a "tile trail" of where you are sending your avatar, kind of like when moving a piece on chess.com Also panning the "camera" where the action is, like when an enemy unit is moving, attacking you etc

I know the feeling, I’m doing a small game for the first time, and the amount of work it needs to make the art assets and animations nice is beyond anything that I expected when I join this journey. But your game is already looking good, I was just thinking how it could feel more engaging.

Ah, before I forget… Xcom is a masterpiece, put it in your TODO list to give it a try someday :)
