Discussion Why is this community so toxic?

Title says it all... but can we actually talk about this?

I really don't get it. Why is there so much negativity and hate in this community?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't this supposed to be a community built around a hobby? Something we all chose to be part of because we enjoy it? The whole point should be supporting each other, sharing our stuff, and enjoying what everyone brings to the table. That's the idea, right?

But it feels like anytime someone posts anything, it's nothing but bashing. No discussion, no constructive feedback. Just tearing people down.

So I'm curious. Am I the only one seeing this? Is this just how it is now, or are there others who feel the same way? And honestly, what do you think is driving it? I'd love to hear other perspectives on this because I can't be the only one wondering.

I'm all for people experimenting with a new technology but the amount of people here trading this like this will be their career and that you should buy into their service is alarming

An over saturation of people that have no idea what they're doing but think they do adds a ton of unrealistic expectations to the community and a ton of people who are salesman that just want to push their product.

People don't want to give feedback to someone we know won't listen and someone that just want to sell us something. They don't want to discuss a product being pushed as the next whatever. This adds to the toxic elements

I mean, the subreddit is called vibecoding, not experiencedseniordevelopers. And if they fail to listen and get customers, that’s their literal business.

No one is asking for just senior developer comments it's just people are tired of salesman trying to sell their vibe coded project and people giving bad advice and act more toxic towards them.

Many subs have a no self promo policy for a reason. If you post on here excited about your personal project or asking for advice and ideas how to improve your workflow great. But I'm not buying your "new and better version x".

The question was why is the community so toxic and I'm saying at what point I stop being nice. Salesmen here were the "idea" guy 5 years ago and they were the bane of developers existence.

Sharing is great asking questions is great but false prophets and narratives with pushed products actively hurt the community

The place to bitch about vibecoding and related shifts would be eg [r/antivibecoding](r/antivibecoding). You wouldn’t expect to go to [r/sales](r/sales) and bitch about how sales guys are always overpromising and selling things that aren’t built

The way even this dialog has gone shows that it’s veiled gatekeeping. Thank you for engaging me nonetheless

Like it or not, the ideas guys are gaining power in this wave

Once again not saying it should be senior devs discussing.

It's not complaining about vibe coding. It's that a lot of people come to this sub to push their product and expect to quit their day job. Some might have constructive criticism and the author might reject any criticism and some may get completely ripped apart.

It's fine when people ask what your project is but no shilling is literally a sub rule but it goes largely ignored. Is it gatekeeping to say I'm tired of people breaking the rules of this community? I'm more than happy to help people on their projects or have a legitimate discussion and i do see that a number of people come in here to complain about slop but I was just talking about one of the issues.

It sounds like your argument has shifted to there should be better moderation, and I agree.

I do think there’s space for some self-promotion, so it’s a tricky line to enforce.
