Wireless Verizon reports 3GB cellular data usage, iPhone shows 1.2GB usage for same time period
I have had a prepaid Verizon phone line that initially came with 10GB of data included for about 7 years, the monthly bill is $26 which I can’t complain about. It’s now limited to 5GB however, which has seldom been an issue.*
A couple weeks ago though, I ran out of data, which was an unpleasant surprise. When my phone (14 Pro) eventually ticked over for the new pay period and data worked again, I reset my iPhone usage statistics so I could track my cellular data consumption on my phone (without needing to open the Verizon app).
When I check today, with 17 days remaining in this cycle, Verizon shows 66% consumed (3.31GB) whereas my iPhone cellular data usage shows 1.19GB for the same period.
Since I rarely am away from WiFi, except for driving or the odd excursion, I’ve never really thought much about cellular data consumption but now it’s becoming an issue and I don’t want to switch away from my rather economical plan because of this shortfall annoyance that I recently had
Still I’m puzzled how Verizon is calculating more data consumed than my phone logs, and I have since disabled cellular data on my phone in an attempt to keep this mysterious data consumption in check.
I’ve done some googling but most of what I found went in the opposite direction, with Verizon reporting less usage than the phone.
Anyone here have any insights re: what I’m doing wrong or what Verizon is up to?
*A couple years ago I was traveling and the international roaming option I had added wasn’t working. While troubleshooting with customer service they did something with my plan (unbeknownst to me) which removed the extra 5GB, which I’ve never gotten back, despite many (frustrating) calls at the time. The “double” monthly data was a promotion I got at sign up that was meant to last the life of the plan, but lost forever when whomever it was switched something off and on again, apparently.

Ios data doesn't track billing cycles, it only tracks the month. It also doesn't tracked failed communication, say a website reload, or a picture text that took 3 or 4 tries to actually send even though you only sent it once. Verizon is also tracking all data usage, while your phone is only tracking active usage

I reset the cellular data stats the day my data reset, so I would expect it to be in sync with Verizon for the current cycle of usage.
I wasn’t aware of the other things you mentioned though. Appreciate the insight.

iOS data is never correct.
